My Inquirer column today is on the difference between a traveler and a tourist. It is clear from his travel writings and notebooks that Rizal was a traveler not a tourist.

Photos from Ambeth R. Ocampo's post

I gifted him with a chalice acquired from an Ermita antique shop--English silver made for Episcopalian service, cheaper than a tacky plated one from Quiapo. I never tire of Intramuros

I never tire of Intramuros.
Even if I have been walking around the walls for over 40 years I often see or find something new when I am with my students.
These old street signs on the corner of Real and Santa Lucia are old tiles (Top) and contemporary Mariwasa tile (Bottom) the walls have many stories to tell if you are willing to listen.
My Inquirer column today is a quick guide to San Agustin Church and Intramuros so that visitors will not only see but notice.

A welcome addition to my numismatic reference shelf arrived this week

A welcome addition to my numismatic reference shelf arrived this week. Browsing it made me happy I’m retired from collecting and just appreciating what others have, it will take three lifetimes to collect all these Philippine medals and tokens from 1790-2024

The elevation of Kalookan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David to Cardinal reminded me of the first Filipino to get a red hat

The elevation of Kalookan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David to Cardinal reminded me of the first Filipino to get a red hat. Rufino Cardinal Santos who is only remembered today for the hospital that bears his name. Both the latest and the first Filipino Cardinal are Kapampangans.
Photo shows Cardinal Santos in full regalia upon arrival in Manila.
