My Inquirer column yesterday has a translation from the original Spanish of the explanatory note on the 1734 Murillo Velarde map you may find interesting. The only physical copy availbe to the public today is displayed in the National Library of the Philippines, a gift from businessman Mel Velarde.

The photos of the skull were taken by me in USC Museum last July , the composite showing the detail of the decorated teet was lifted from my page without citation.

Before electric or digital doorbells and CCTV camera old homes used brass door knockers. Using your knuckles to knock on a door made of thick Philippine hardwood was common but difficult. Saw these 19th century door knockers in the shape of a delicate woman's hand holding a ball in heritage homes in Teal, Batangas.
