Danton Remoto says that one of the few things he remembered from college history class was the name of Rizal's pet dog: "Usman." Who among our heroes and historical figures had pets? Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo had a pet dog who appears in many of his selfies.
The most recent photo to surface [Left] acquired by the National Museum, shows the dog whose name is lost to history. He/She appears in other photos I have compiled over the years. Here is a sampling.

Christmas carols and songs are not just the seasonal tunes that run in the Philippines from Sept. to Jan. 6 (Three Kings). They are songs that date us, and more importantly, define us. We look back on the songs we learned growing up and look forward to the new ones that will be composed for generations after us.

One of the things I (mis)remembered from grad school was the BBC or Balintawak Beer Company whose factory was in Polo, Bulacan now Valenzuela, MetroManila. The beer was a Triple B or BBB for "Balintawak Beer Brewery."
A fawning wartime advertisement [Left] greeting the Japanese invader of the Philippines, and a postwar photograph of the brewery [Right] shows that it was not BBC, but BBBC.
Anyone here remembers how the taste of BBB compared with SMB or San Miguel Beer?

Whenever I browse old periodicals I focus on advertisements

Whenever I browse old periodicals I focus on advertisements. We tend to overlook century-old ads even if these are pieces in a jigsaw puzzle that is reconstructing the past. My Inquirer column today are on ads in a 1907 Manila Bulletin Yearbook that help us see how much has changed and how much remains the same.

Saved from the melting pot

Saved from the melting pot.
Yesterday, December 15, was Emilio Jacinto's 149th birthday. Many years ago I browsed over a "bayong" full of scrap silver at an antique dealer's home and picked out a black oxidized pen in the form of a quill with a ribbon [LEFT].
When I asked the price, the dealer weighed it and computed at the spot price for silver per gram. I went home and cleaned it. To my surprise it was a school prize for poetry, awarded to EMILIO JACINTO Y DIZON ! [RIGHT]

Calamba got its name, according to legend, when the Spaniards first set foot in town and asked a woman they met on the road: “Cual es el nombre de este lugar?” (What is the name of this place?). Not knowing any Spanish, the woman replied “Calan ba?” (You want a pot?). When I first visited Calamba as a boy, the town landmark was a giant earthenware pot or palayok in the town plaza that has been removed as an eyesore. (NHCP Data Bank)
Update. I’m told it’s still there. Must have missed it using a...
