RIZAL's ROSARY

RIZAL's ROSARY.
I first saw Rizal's rosary over 40 years ago, it was exhibited in the Ateneo High School Library and it was the first Rizal relic that made an impression on me. It did not strike me in a religious way since many Ateneans are taught to keep a rosary in their pockets.
This object made Rizal real to me that day, it made me realize that he was not just a distant hero fossilized in bronze and marble but someone who once walked the earth as I did.

Last night I sat beside ELKE PICKERT at a dinner in the residence of the Austrian Ambassador Johann Brieger. She is descended from Blumentritt's daughter Dolores who Rizal called "Loleng."
Ms. Pickert told me about a box of memorabilia in her home that contains: an unpublished letter of Rizal to Blumentritt as well as two sketches of Loleng made during Juan Luna's visit to Litomerice in the spring of 1899.

T. he first Medico-Legal Laboratory was established in Manila in 1895. The UP Department of Legal medicine was established in 1919 under Dr. Sixto de Los Angeles who was part of the team that examined the so-called " Bonifacio Bones" exhumed from Maragondon a year before.

When I studied the statue up close I saw the signature of Guillermo Tolentino, National Artist for Sculpture, on the base. I dug up my files and found a photo [Left] of the sculpture when it was still in Tolentino's studio on Retiro street.
