Thanks to Ateneo de Manila University for the honor of being the Senator Gil J. Puyat Professor this year. I hope to live up to it through my continuing research and dissemination of Philippine history to a wider non-academic audience.

Photos from Ambeth R. Ocampo's post
I have only seen and handled the two reduced versions of the rare 18thC Murillo-Bagay map of the Philippines separate from the books these were attached to.
All the copies of the Murillo and Dela Concepcion histories I have consulted in Manila and abroad always have the map missing.
I thought I would never see a complete book until I saw both in Brussels yesterday. It was a pleasant surprise.

Manneken Pis a 17thC bronze statue of a naked boy pissing into a fountain is one of the curious tourist attractions of Brussels. When Freud visited (Top)it was clothed in a medics uniform (Bottom). I have been to Brussels twice before but never got around to trace Rizal's steps in the city. Accompanied by Philippine Ambassador to Belgium Jaime Victor Ledda (Right) who cuts a resemblance to the hero with his overcoat, Freud and I visited the site of the boarding house where Rizal stayed, twice, in the winter of 1890 and again in the spring of 1891 (Left).
From Brussels he moved to Ghent to supervise the publication of El Filibusterismo.
My Inquirer column yesterday was on Rizal in Brussels...

We often see history in the present, but there are rare times when we see a welcome break in the cycle.
