Went through a pile of old magazines for sale at the Bayanihan Collectors Club event this morning

Went through a pile of old magazines for sale at the Bayanihan Collectors Club event this morning. The trove obviously came from a “Vilmanian.”Not a single Nora Aunor cover in sight.
This one from October 1972 asked if Vilma was the Number 1 Star at the time. She played her cards right, winning elected office and now promoting her two sons (the younger was my student) for the same.

On average 3,000 people drown in the Philippines every year

On average 3,000 people drown in the Philippines every year. Shouldn't numbers be lower in an archipelagic country? We have forgotten much of our maritime heritage, topic of my Inquirer column today.

My students endured a challenging midterm exam today

My students endured a challenging midterm exam today. Many felt they might not make the 75 percent passing mark yet they were all smiles and asked for photos. I teach them not to be discouraged, but to choose their battles, and fight another day, better prepared.

Unfortunately, this is not the legendary Marcos Gold

Unfortunately, this is not the legendary Marcos Gold. Neither is it the fabled Yamashita gold. This is a mock up of the gold bars in the reserves of the Central Bank of Indonesia. Forgot Freud in the bag check counter of the Bank Indonesia Museum. He was upset.
