Looking Back@ Echague
Looking Back@ Echague.
Browsing an old book this morning I found an illustration of Rafael de Echague y Bermingham, Spanish Governor-general of the Philippines from 1862-1865. I googled him and found the photo on the right as well as some information that helped me connect Echague, Isabela with a person. Echague survived the great 1863 earthquake that destroyed many landmarks of Intramuros including: the Manila Cathedral, the Ayuntamiento, and the Palacio del Gobernador. He was later widowe...

Thanks to everyone who patiently lined up to have their books signed at the MIBF last Saturday and Sunday. It means a lot for me to meet and chat with readers.
Not to be outdone by Butch Dalisay, the Penman himself, I came prepared with Sharpies,Parkers, Montblancs, a Pelikan and Pilot. Butch gave me a blotter last year that I out to good use and now need to find the right paper to change it with. I also brought a stamp pad to apply the mythological sun (with a face) on some books.

Always a pleasure and a privilege to meet and greet readers.
Hope we can accommodate more than the limit imposed by the organizers, there are two floors in this years MIBF so it is not as crowded as it used to be.

My Inquirer column today argues that hybrid learning, both online & in-person, is the way to go
My Inquirer column today argues that hybrid learning, both online & in-person, is the way to go. We should not lose some of the gains of the pandemic like online learning and use these to adapt to other issues like traffic, inefficient public transportation, lack of classrooms, and internet connectivity.

Pasuklob on the eve of Mama Mary’s Birthday
Pasuklob on the eve of Mama Mary’s Birthday.
On the eve of departure from Naga, I prayed for my intentions under the mantle of Our Lady of Penafrancia. The original mantle from Spain was worn at the canonical coronation of the image a century ago.
Earlier in the day, I visited both shrine and basilica in gratitude for a successful trip and the rehabilitation of Savage Mind Bookshop.

SURREXIT BIBLIOPOLIUM VERE.
My heart sank when I saw photos of Savage Mind Bookstore flooded last week [LEFT], because it is the creative heart of Naga. But less than a week later I sat in the same spot [Right] with the creative clergy of Naga and a dermatologist who wrote a novel on San Pedro Bautista.
