TEODORO A. AGONCILLO is a byline on a textbook to many people

TEODORO A. AGONCILLO is a byline on a textbook to many people. He was National Scientist and nationalist historian, but to me he was both mentor and friend.
Remembering him today, his 112th birth anniversary, with a note he sent for my 23rd birthday. Since he died in 1985 I continually strive to live up to his expectations.
My book "Talking History: Conversations with Teodoro A. Agoncillo" is a record of my education in Philippine history.

My Inquiree column today on an issue with politicians and protocol plates in 1934. You think we have learned or changed in the past 90 years?

They are at it again

They are at it again.
If there is some improvement, at least they dont copy my original caption and pass it off as their own. It's so easy to share the original post on their page, or simply credit the original post. It takes effort to find these images, crop and enhance them and annotate.

Envious that Apo Whang Od drew this centipede, like a bracelet, on a friend’s wrist

Envious that Apo Whang Od drew this centipede, like a bracelet, on a friend’s wrist. It must be very painful to be honored this way. I don’t know if I can even endure having Whang Od’s signature “three dots” applied on my skin without anaesthesia.

I thought the practice of Pinoy post-mortem photos or "recuerdos de patay" was extinct. But in the age of the Selfie there are more contemporary souvenirs of the dead than those from the past.

Photos from Ambeth R. Ocampo's post

Yesterday, on P. Burgos, Makati, I asked if I could photograph a child in a "Chucky" costume. He obliged by slashing with his plastic knife. I have yet to see an Aswang, Tianak, Tikbalang, Dwende, or Rodrigo Duterte Halloween Costume.
My Inquirer column today is on the former fear of aswang has developed into terror of tokhang and the Duterte war on drugs.

Heidelberg Castle Ruins

Heidelberg Castle Ruins.
Glad to be home but missing the famous ruins of Heidelberg castle. It changes depending on the time of day you gaze up on them. Lit up like a glowing ember at night, it is visible all around town.
This is the view from Karlstrasse where Rizal first lodged in February 1886. He had a room with a view of the castle.
No wonder Mark Twain, Rizal and I left part of our hearts in this fairytale city.

With Freud safely packed in my suitcase lwe are on way home from Frankfurt where we started our journey two weeks ago.
Before leaving Heidelberg we revisited the four places associated with Rizal ending at the “Augenklinik” on Bergheimerstrasse 20 where Rizal apprenticed under Otto Becker from February to August 1886. [See historical marker in the back]
Thanks to NBDB and NCCA for making my on-site research possible and Senator Loren Legarda for the inspiration to literally follow Rizal...

Photos from Philippine Consulate General in Frankfurt's post

Thanks to Senator Loren Legarda, Freud and I learned so much tracing Rizal's footsteps in Heidelberg. Was glad to share Lakbay Rizal with over 50 people yesterday and again today before I fly back to Manila. Senator Legarda’s vision provided the push for Philippine participation in the Venice Biennale and getting PH as Guest of Honor in the 2025 Frankfurt Bookfair.

If you recognize any of these, you went to university in the last century

If you recognize any of these, you went to university in the last century.
Before Powerpoint and Keynote and LCD projectors we had slide carrousels and overhead projectors.
Before we had Word, we had manual typewriters, electric typewriters and used a lot of correction fluid and correction tape.
These were the tools of the trade in my early years of teaching, I considered myself "cutting edge" at the time, but in retrospect those were jurassic times.
My Inquirer column today is a Throwback to th...
