These two ladies were photographed in Mangatarem, Pangasinan in 1912. I am more interested in the caryatids that adorned the staircase, and curious what else in that house was exceptional.
Photo from the Luther Parker Collection, National Library of the Philippines.

Rizal's Breakfast: TUYO

Rizal's Breakfast: TUYO.
In his early autobiography "Memories of a Manila Student" Rizal wrote: "my breakfast generally consists of a plate of rice and two dried sardines." The original term "sardines secas" may sound "sosyal" or upper class to Indios like me, but all Filipinos know this as "tuyo."
The best way to know Rizal is to read Rizal, so I will be posting from the pimary sources so we can get to know our Lolo Jose better.

Rizal's cooking

Rizal's cooking.
School makes Rizal's novels boring because we are taught to mine it for patriotic messages, when these should first be enjoyed as literature. I have long been fascinated by the food references in Rizal's novels, from the tinola in the opening chapters to the different types of fish and what dishes they were best for in Chapter 23.
In the manuscript of the Noli we can see that: Ayungin is good for sinigang, Bia for escabeche, Dalag and Buan-buan for pesa, lobsters in the fryi...

Soon the view of Manila Bay from MOA will just be a memory

Soon the view of Manila Bay from MOA will just be a memory.
Saw this barge dumping sand into the bay last week, creating yet another mound of earth to be flattened by bulldozers later into real estate reclaimed or created from the sea. How far it will go? What will be built on it? Shouldn't the famous view of Manila Bay be enjoyed by all, as "patrimony of the nation"?

My Inquirer column today was prompted by the Coast Guard vessel BRP Teresa Magbanua leaving Escoda Shoal, in the disputed Spratly Islands. Its an occupational hazard that I see beyond current events into the past.
