Thirty years ago I published an annotated catalog of rare Rizal manuscripts in the vault of the National Library

Thirty years ago I published an annotated catalog of rare Rizal manuscripts in the vault of the National Library. My list was more complete than the Library inventory and formed the basis to know that things were "missing." But in the Kafka-esque Philippines by making my list public and putting the library to shame, they got back at me by insinuating that I had the missing documents. Reminds me of "pusit" tactics. It seems theft was not just on Rizal manuscripts in the vault but other papers ea...

Do not disturb.

Do Not Disturb.
Travelled 12 kilometers by bus from Heidelberg to the small town of Wilhelmsfeld, where Rizal stayed for three months in 1886.
When I found Rizal Park, the hero was busy and didn’t want to be disturbed 🙂 Turn on sound.
More photos and stories to follow.

The difference between night and day--Literally.
Took an Uber from the train station to the hotel and was dropped off in a small alley and told to just walk till I find our hotel. Cars are not allowed in the Altstadt or historical city center that has the longest pedestrian-only walking street in Germany the Hauptstrasse where our Hotel sum Ritter St. Georg is located. Our hotel in the day [Left] and at night [Right]. It is, next to Heidelberg Castle, one of the most photographed sites in t...

SERENDIPITY is finding something you weren't looking for

SERENDIPITY is finding something you weren't looking for.
On the trail of a marble sculpture Rizal saw in Frankfurt in 1886, I was pleasantly surprised to in the Liebiegshaus Museum an image of the Santo Niño made in the 1520's by the Mechelen workshop in Flanders. It is the cousin of the Santo Niño de Cebu made in the same workshop.
The Frankfurt one never left Europe so he is pale and white, while the one in Cebu is brown and sun-burned. I wish the custodians will allow me to see th...

FOLLOWING RIZAL IN FRANKFURT.
Rizal saw the monument to Goethe in 1886. In 2024 I stood on the same spot where Rizal stood, the spot where he drew a sketch of the head of Goethe [Inset]. He commented that the re-presentation was "beautiful, but it made Goethe look more like a rich banker than a poet."
My Inquirer column today is on the experience of following Rizal's footsteps in Frankfurt. With Google maps and entries for his diaries, Freud and I located the monuments, buildings, and...

Freud and I tracing Rizal’s footsteps in Frankfurt

Freud and I tracing Rizal’s footsteps in Frankfurt. In 1886, Rizal described Frankfurt “as the second most beautiful city [in Germany] I have seen.” Unfortunately, much of the city was destroyed in World War II but some things remain like the Goethe Monument that Rizal visited and drew.
