Lecture on Mabini for his birthday, organized by the Department of Foreign Affairs Office of Cultural Diplomacy. Grateful for the hardy souls who braved the weather to learn about the hero who was Conscience of the nascent First Republic.

A post for Mabini's birthday tomorrow
A post for Mabini's birthday tomorrow.
On August 20, 1898 Apolinario Mabini wrote a memo to the president regarding abuses of soldiers. It was necessary to stop "tong," remove a general from Manila, and reassign him to Malolos.
There were too many callers and visitors in his office he could not work in peace. He complained "nagugulo na ang aking ulo."
Original manuscript from the Philippine Insurgent Papers, now preserved in the National Library of the Philippines.

Tiis Ganda: No Pain
Tiis Ganda: No Pain. No Gain.
Our ancestors not only wore gold ornaments on their bodies, they had gold pegs on their teeth. This archeologicallly excavated skull in the University of San Carlos Museum, Cebu shows the dental implants in detail. Must have been a painful procedure. Tiis ganda!

My INQUIRER.net column today is on a hero we know as the "Sublime Paralytic" today, but in his time was called the "Dark Chamber of the President" behind his back.

Mabini and English
Mabini and English.
Before I visited the Apolinario Mabini Shrine in Batangas, almost four decades ago, I thought the "Sublime Paralytic" only wrote in Spanish and Tagalog.
Rummaging the remnants of his library I found: a Spanish Manual for Parish priests; a tattered English dictionary used while in exile in Guam (see date and signature encircled); and even a historical novel "The White Company" by Arthur Conan Doyle!
Would have been amazing if Mabini read Sherlock Holmes for le...

Photos from Saint Pedro Poveda College's post
Had a wonderful time speaking to fellow teachers this morning. The booksigning took longer than the lecture!
Thanks to my niece Siena who invited me to be her Confirmation ninong here recently, I met teachers and got invited to speak not just to Saint Pedro Poveda College teachers but also those from nearby Xavier, ICA, and La Salle Greenhills.

Thanks to DLSU Department of Literature and the Bienvenido N. Santos Center for Creative Writing Center for organizing a talk and book signing on Wednesday 17 July 2024.
I am rudely reminded of my age when people express surprise that I knew the late great Bienvenido N. Santos both as a writer and as a person. Unlike my usual History Comes Alive lectures, this one will look back on Santos, memory, and my career in Creative Nonfiction/Public History.
