Mabini and English

Mabini and English.
Before I visited the Apolinario Mabini Shrine in Batangas, almost four decades ago, I thought the "Sublime Paralytic" only wrote in Spanish and Tagalog.
Rummaging the remnants of his library I found: a Spanish Manual for Parish priests; a tattered English dictionary used while in exile in Guam (see date and signature encircled); and even a historical novel "The White Company" by Arthur Conan Doyle!

Photos from Saint Pedro Poveda College's post

Had a wonderful time speaking to fellow teachers this morning. The booksigning took longer than the lecture!
Thanks to my niece Siena who invited me to be her Confirmation ninong here recently, I met teachers and got invited to speak not just to Saint Pedro Poveda College teachers but also those from nearby Xavier, ICA, and La Salle Greenhills.

Thanks to DLSU Department of Literature and the Bienvenido N

Thanks to DLSU Department of Literature and the Bienvenido N. Santos Center for Creative Writing Center for organizing a talk and book signing on Wednesday 17 July 2024.
I am rudely reminded of my age when people express surprise that I knew the late great Bienvenido N. Santos both as a writer and as a person. Unlike my usual History Comes Alive lectures, this one will look back on Santos, memory, and my career in Creative Nonfiction/Public History.
Free and open to the public but regi...

If our ancestors lived in a Golden Age, why are we so poor today?

If our ancestors lived in a Golden Age, why are we so poor today?
These pre-Spanish gold ornaments covered the eyes, nose, and mouth of the dead on the journey to the afterlife. This death mask and a pair of earrings were excavated during the building of the Cebu subway on Plaza Independencia by a National Museum team that included my friend Dr Jobers Bersales. He said, other precious objects were lost to looters.
i had only seen these in photos and was glad to see them displayed in ...

Fact Check: Magellan’s Cross

Fact Check: Magellan’s Cross
Magellan’s Cross is one of the iconic tourist spots in old Cebu. The historical marker [Top] clearly states the commemorative nature of the site. The cross is not the original cross planted by Magellan in 1521.
However, the marble base of the cross [Bottom] declares that a piece or fragment of the original 1521 cross is encased inside the cross of tindalo venerated by the people.
Isn’t it safe to presume that the original cross was chopped into firewo...

Look again

Look again.
This gold finial [Left] was found in Mindanao during road construction decades ago. If you look closely at the detail [Right] is that an “alien” or a human wearing a horned headdress?

Most visitors to the San Agustin Museum miss a charming ivoryimage of a youthful, actually child-like, San Miguel Arangel

Most visitors to the San Agustin Museum miss a charming ivoryimage of a youthful, actually child-like, San Miguel Arangel. Next time you visit take a close look at the Asian-looking devil. Probably the handiwork of a. Chinese carver.
