Mabini in exile

Textbook history has reduced Apolinario Mabini into “The Sublime Paralytic,” whatever that means. To complicate matters, Mabini is sometimes referred to as the “Brains of the Revolution,” which confuses students who know that the same title applies to Emilio Jacinto.

Someone once commented that I am like an ostrich who hides my head in the past instead of commenting on current social issues. If I were to be relevant in this critic’s eyes, then today’s column should be on Typhoon “Glenda” or President Aquino’s challenge to the Supreme Court on its ruling that the…

Auction fever

These are exciting times for the Philippine art market, with the growing interest in paintings by Filipino artists fueled by money and speculation better left to the trading floors of the stock exchanges than to the once quiet art galleries and private collections.

One of the funniest travel accounts of the country is “An Englishwoman in the Philippines” by Campbell Dauncey (1906). Her comments on Philippine life and the American colonials in 1904 are an engaging read. She described Manila, Malacañang, and William Howard Taft who made a return visit to the Phi…

Street food in 19thC Manila: bread from Panaderia Gunao was advertised through the vendors voice (in my childhood bread was sold from bicycles with a horn and was called 'pot-pot'); milk vendor has her product in a clay pot on a bilao balanced on her head (today we get milk from stores in bottles and tetra packs); on the right is a Chinese noodle vendor (today we go to Chow King). Please share.

Attended the opening of the exhibit of paintings by Fernando Zobel at the Ayala Museum last Monday but had to return to view the works. At openings you get distracted by the likes of National Artist Arturo Luz and the artist's namesake and godson.

Jose Rizal knew he was a marked man when he disembarked from the steamer that brought him from Hong Kong to Manila in 1892. He chose to stay in a hotel and told relatives and friends who had offered their hospitality that this was not a snub but for their own good.

We associate the Ayala Corporation with Makati, Malls, and gated communities today but before all that was a distillery by the Pasig River that made Ginebra Ayala. The drawings in this advertisement seem to be by Fernando Amorsolo. Please share.
