Last weeks post showing the Luna brothers fencing generated interesting comments about the poses, fencing-style, and even photo retouching on a foot that is misplaced. Fencers please share what you know from this picture of Juan Luna and Rizal fencing in Paris.

Jose Rizal was a thoughtful friend. From Calamba, in 1887, he sent Ferdinand Blumentritt, a heavy smoker, six cigarettes; kamuning, cinnamon, and sampaguita flowers; and his home-made wood lighter. Rizal's cover letter contains pictures and instructions on how to use it. (Please share).

Planking on the steps of the Rizal Library last summer. The steps have the titles of works by Ateneo alumni. It starts with Rizal and ends with Rizal without the Overcoat. To prevent me from doing this again the titles have been repositioned. I only fit on the landing not on a single step!

At the time the Luna brothers, Antonio (chemist) and Juan (painter), were arrested as suspects in the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution in 1896 they ran a fencing school (Sala de Armas) on Calle Alix (now Legarda) in Sampaloc. Will lecture on these two hot-heads in the Ayala Museum on Saturday August @3pm. See you there! Please share.
