FILIPINIANA TREASURES ABROAD 2.
A plan for Emilio Aguinaldo's camp, to be built on top of a mountain in Luzon 2,500 meters above sea level. Thats higher than Baguio at 1,400 meters above sea level. Where could this be?
Signed by a certain Francisco del Mar, the printed document is dated before Aguinaldo's capture by the enemy in Palanan, Isabela the day after his birthday party in 1901.
There are bedrooms for the President, Dr. Santiago Barcelona, Director of Hygiene and Simeon Vi...

FILIPINIANA TREASURES ABROAD 1.
Austin Craig's "Lineage, Life, and Labors of Jose Rizal" (1913) is illustrated with many photographs. One shows Philippine ethnographic objects (left) I believed were casualties of the 1945 bombing of Dresden. Thanks to a Goethe-Institut Manila travel grant and the support of our embassy in Berlin, I was able to visit the Dresden Ethnographic Museum storage and handle the things Rizal sent to A. B. FILIPINIANA FROM THE ARCHIVES.
The earliest depictions of the islands of Cebu, Mactan, and Bohol are in these two French Manuscript versions of Antonio Pigafetta's "First Voyage around the World."
On the top is Bohol and Zzubu (Cebu) below, and in the middle is Pigafetta probably heard and recorded the name of the island in the middle as "Mattan" that means "they kill" in Spanish, an island we know today as Mactan.
Can you explain the differences between the Bibliotheque Nation...

VICTORY OF LAPULAPU or DEATH OF MAGELLAN?
Writing Philippine history from a Filipino viewpoint is not new. It began long before Renato Constantino and Teodoro Agoncillo defined the narrative for our generation in the 1960's.
This sketch from one of Juan Luna's 30 extant sketchbooks became relevant this week as it depicted Magellan on the way to his end in Mactan 500 years ago.
In November 1890 Luna finished a small study or boceto in oil and offered it to Jose Rizal as a gift. ...

TIME TRAVEL through history.
If you were transported in time to 1521 Cebu or Mactan would you be able to communicate? Or as a 21st century Tagalog-speaker would you need an interpreter?
Of the three extant French manuscripts of Antonio Pigafetta's chronicle of the Magellan Expedition, the most beautiful is that preserved in Yale University that has a list of words after Chapter 28 (aftermath of the Battle of Mactan) taken down by Pigafetta. I can make out: Coco, Pussud, Utin, Boto, Bil...

An eyewitness account of the Battle of Mactan

My Inquirer column today summarizes the events leading to the 1521 Battle of Mactan from the account of Antonio Pigafetta, chronicler of the Magellan expedition, who was an eyewitness to history. He may have painted Magellan with a soft brush but I would take him over other, more fanciful, accounts that are best treated as folklore or "kwento ni Lola Basyang."

Dug out of a drawer during the pandemic is one of my favourite anting-anting.It invokes Jesus and Rizal. Obverse (left) depicts Rizal as we know him from monuments: wearing an overcoat, holding a book. Reverse (right) shows the hero’s back. This amulet protects me from danger and intrigue both front and back. Beware of modern reproductions that only have Rizal’s front, you are shortchanged, vulnerable to a stab in the back. #ambethocampo #thefilipinohistorian #AskAmbeth #lookingback #rizal #amu...
