RIP +Ludovico D. Badoy (left) was National Historical Commission Executive Director for 7 of the 9 years I served as Chairman. The “Christian Mayor” of Cotabato brought administrative, political and people skills that kept me focused on history and cultural administration. I wouldn’t have been half as successful without him. Director Vic is more than a Covid- statistic, he was a friend. This photo was taken before a lunch hosted for us at the Istana by SR Nathan President of Singapore (center) w...

"Ang pangit na sisiu ng pato" is part of a manuscript that is known to scholars as "Limang salita na ysinalin sa Tagalog ni Jose Rizal" [Five tales translated into Tagalog by Jose Rizal] that was completed on 14 October 1886. A selection of tales from Hans Cristian Andersen these were embellished with charming spot drawings and dedicated to the hero's nephews and nieces. The photo is the easiest to translate to English, but how would you translate the following: Si Gahinlalaki, Ang Punu ng Pino,...

My dad would have been 96 years old today.
These photos with his favourite grandson reflect the gift he gave me too: a love for reading.
I believe reading kept him sharp and lucid till the day he died at 94. He transitioned from physical books to a tablet and his iPhone.

Coveting PH, then and now
My Inquirer column today looks back to a distant time---when the Portuguese, the Dutch, the British, and the Germans showed their interest in taking the Philippines through a show of force.

I like my Century Eggs translucent on the outside, gooey on the inside. Cut lengthwise, garnished with pickled ginger dusted with white sugar. It is taken in one gulp like a fresh oyster. Sarap! #ambethocampo #AskAmbeth #thefilipinohistorian #sarap #centuryegg #pickledginger #sugar

Post-pandemic visit to Hong Kong will be to retrace Rizal's footsteps yet again.
Century Square on 5 D'Aguilar Street, Central is where Rizal's eye clinic used to be. Based on his business card his clinic hours were from 2-6 p.m.
The historical marker appeared and disappeared over the years, it also moves! Once it was near the fire alarm, another time it was above a shuttered store. If its still there today, can you guess where it will be located?

I often give these anting-anting as memorable presents to departing diplomats. After the amused shock I explain how these artifacts illustrate “indiogenization” as Kidlat Tahimik has rephrased indigenisation. How Pinoys made the foreign our own. Today, the Basilica of the Santo Nino de Cebu was declared a National Cultural Treasure. It preserves what is believed to be the very same image presented by Magellan to Humabon’s wife as a baptismal present in 1521 and was recovered by the 1565 Legazpi ...
