An agenda for K-to-12 Araling Panlipunan

Sorry for the late posting. Thinking aloud on the things I wished could have been in my grade school and high school Philippine history classes.

Pandemic killed Lapulapu. Not the fish, but the faceless hero of a battle Filipinos won in Mactan 500 years ago. The front page of Monday’s Inquirer was dominated by a photo of six Philippine Coast

Just as imaginative as Senator Go’s declaration that Lapulapu was Tausug, and a mere warrior of the Sultan of Sulu. An old European engraving depicting the death of Magellan was blown up and animated at the Museo Naval, Madrid for the 2019 Magallanes Exhibit. #ambethocampo #thefilipinohistorian #lookingback #AskAmbeth #magellan #mactan #museonaval #madrid #museo #naval

"MAX OF TRANSYLVANIA."
The second oldest book in the National Library of the Philippines was published in 1524. A rare second edition of De Molucis Insulis by Maximilianus Transylvanus. This small book I handled once before (sorry I dont have an actual photo at the moment) is the first description of the islands and people that we know today as the Philippines and the Filipinos. Based on interviews with survivors of the Magellan expedition"Max of Transylvania" published a year before Anton...

The National Library of the Philippines is not just a repository of books, it also preserves artifacts like Manuel L. Quezon’s elegant narra desk and chair. Possibly handcrafted in Bilibid and ornamented with bone-inlay. In the 1980’s, long before it was given museum status, it was just old furniture used in the Filipiniana Division. Once or twice in 1988 when I would spend Saturday mornings helping the public with Filipiniana references for their research I used this desk not knowing I had lite...

This prewar ad for Aladdin lamps struck me because everyone is sharing the light to read. Everyone holds a physical book, magazine or newspaper. A 21st century Pinoy family will still be photographed reading, but from smartphones. #ambethocampo #thefilipinohistorian #lookingback #AskAmbeth #reading #lamp #smartphone

Freud has never been this close to the Rizal monument in Luneta. He insisted on a video at the Rizal Monument in Madrid, that lies on the Avenida de Filipinas. Sorry the caneraman has shaky hands. Trying hard not to catch the driving range behind the monument. #ambethocampo #thefilipinohistorian #lookingback #AskAmbeth #freud #rizal #monument #madrid #manila #luneta

Found this undated, unidentified photo in my file.
Is this a Lapu-lapu monument?
Where is this located? #ambethocampo #thefilipinohistorian #AskAmbeth #lookingback #where #lapulapu

Dutch cleanser, Dutch treat, Dutch wife

My Inquirer column today is a follow up to Wednesday's column on the abrasador a.k.a in PH as tandayan and Hotdog Pillow. In Indonesia it is known as a Dutch Wife that added to my knowledge of Dutch Cleanser and Dutch Treat.

Textbook history teaches us that La Solidaridad was a Filipino reformist newspaper in Spain that ran from 1889-1895, edited by Graciano Lopez Jaena and M.H. del Pilar. Rizal wrote for it. We are not told that it was a text-heavy, fortnightly, way smaller than a broadsheet or tabloid today. This rare issue with a front-page photograph of Ferdinand Blumentritt is preserved in the Cesky Budejovice Archives in the Czech Republic.

Redtagged for being exemplary teachers.
Last year people following this page alerted me to a Government Report that redtagged me and two other Metrobank Outstanding Teachers as Communist Fronts in Government. This photo was on p. 231 of the Annual Report on EO70 and listed as Editor in Chief is National Security Adviser.
Since when has doing a public good become subversive? #ambethocampo #thefilipinohistorian #lookingback #AskAmbeth #subversive
