Unlearning flag history
Growing up I didn't know about the 1898 Battle of Alapan and other military victories in Cavite before the Declaration of Independence was read from the window of Emilio Aguinaldo's Kawit home. The iconic "Independence Balcony" added when the house was renovated into the impressive mansion we have today. My Inquirer column today on Alapan 1898 that is commemorated each year as National Flag Day.

ARTURO R. LUZ (1926-2021) National Artist.
Luz was like a father to me. His passing yesterday has left me an orphan.
Of the many things he taught me, the most valuable was learning how to see God in good design: in the simplicity of an ivory pluck for a Japanese koto, the craftsmanship in a bamboo tea whisk, restraint in the contents of a bento box, and the execution of high-grade, fatty tuna belly or otoro sushi that delights multiple senses: sight, smell, touch, taste, and balance. ...

Rizal on anti-Asian hate
"I don’t advise anyone to make a trip to America,” Rizal wrote to his family in April 1888, the day after he saw the San Francisco Bay for the first time. Unlike hundreds of others after him who left their hearts in San Francisco, Rizal’s opinion seems harsh and needs some explanation. First impressions colored Rizal’s short trip to America, and it is unfortunate that it happened at the hands of US customs and immigration.

Fake News. Deep Fakes.
After that creepy app that allows us to make archival photos come alive, the latest one allows us people to place their face, seamlessly, on an old photo. This harmless app is potentially dangerous for history because it can be used to create Fake News.
Many of my lecture posters place me with historical figures or events, like Forrest Gump or Bernie Sanders in mittens. Deep Fakes are harder to debunk if pictures are manipulated beyond a joke and made to lie.

Another year with virtual Commencement Exercises.
I don't miss sweating profusely under my academic gown, but I do miss seeing my students off as they join the "real world."
If I feel happy for my graduating students, I can imagine how happy (or relieved) parents must be to see their kids get their diplomas. I don't have children of my own so my students are like my children too.

Rizal made a little known trip to the U.S.A.
When I plotted the place names mentioned in his diary I was amazed how he travelled by train all the way from California to New York. Connect the dots.
Writing today's Inquirer column
https://opinion.inquirer.net/140435/r...
made me wonder if I have the stamina to follow this route by land rather than taking the fast and easy option of cheap airfares.

Yaman: History and Heritage in Philippine Money was produced for the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas by Studio 5, coordinated by Marily Orosa and Fe de la Cruz and Jay Bautista. And of course, my text, Felice Santa Maria's afterword and Wig Tysmans photographs were woven into a book by BG Hernandez's who design. Does this sound like an acceptance speech at book and design awards soon?
