E. Aguilar Cruz, my friend and mentor, is best remembered for Abe restaurant and a selection of his works in the National Museum. He would have been 106 years old this year.
Was pleased that the eminent painter Romulo Galicano found these blurred photos of us together in my study taken over 30 years ago. My first book was on his life and art republished by RPD Publications. Its available Online from Rustan's or from the publisher:

General Tomas Mascardo was insubordinate to General Antonio Luna. To make matters worse, Mascardo made a sneering reference to Luna's private parts.
On 22 April 1899 Luna wrote Felipe Buencamino:
“The telegrams exchanged between the General Tomas Mascardo and me contain phrases that are offensive to me to a great degree. These offenses can be settled between gentlemen and I think that the said general is a gentleman, so I beg you and Francisco Roman to demand from said gentleman a re...

The Black hero of the Filipino army

The sweep of Black Lives Matter in the U.S. reminded me of some Black soldiers who deserted and fought on our side during Philippine American War.

THE SELDEN MAP.
In 1659 the estate of John Selden donated a hand-drawn map of China, c.1650 or late Ming Period to the Bodleian Library in Oxford University. The map traces trading routes from Quanzhou to the rest of Southeast Asia, including what was then the Spanish Philippines.
Freud and I saw it in the National Library of Singapore shortly before the 2019 pandemic lockdown. We were the only ones in the exhibition at the time providing an opportunity to take good photos and short ...

History Quiz for Tonight.
While in Fort Santiago, awaiting execution at Bagumbayan on the morning of 30 December 1896, Rizal scribbled (upper right) a list of instructions on what to do with his remains (English translation on the left). He is presently buried under the monument in Luneta (lower right).
Which of these instructions were followed? Which were not?
Following in Rizal's footsteps one of the things I accomplished during Pandemic Lockdown is the slide presentation for my ...

In 1936 Quezon standardized the design elements of the PH flag into what we are familiar with today.
Before 1936 you could have varying shades of red, white, and blue. The sun also had eyes, nose and mouth.
Three old flags in the Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit are made of silk rather than cotton or synthetic material. Two have gilt-silver (or copper?) sun and stars attached. My favorite has a fully embroidered red-sun (like Japan's!) with more than the usual 8-rays that is more inclusive ...
