Contributed to a documentary on Rizal in Germany. If not for pandemic it would have been great to literally follow Rizal’s footsteps in Germany with Senator Loren Legarda and historian Milagros C Guerrero. Directed by Floy Quintos who made me look good! #ambethocampo #thefilipinohistorian #lookingback #askambeth #rizal #germany

Controversy over flag colors
Seeing flag vendors on Roxas Boulevard and Edsa cor Ayala this week made me wonder why people don’t display flags on June 12 as much as they used to decades ago. Hindi na uso.
My column today relates the 1985 controversy over the blue field in the flag: navy or sky blue? Or something in between that became the norm after 1986 Edsa People Power.

One of the memorable moments in my colorful past was being designated implementor of Republic Act No. 8491, better known as the “flag law.” I lea...

Following yesterday's response to the post on the Malolos Dinner menu, held on 29 September 1898 to celebrate the ratification of Philippine Independence declared in Kawit on 12 June 1898, I am posting both the LUNCH menu (left) reproduced in Harper's and the DINNER menu (sorry for the bad photo) from a copy in Xavier University Museum in Cagayan de Oro.
The menu was in French to flaunt that Pinoys were sosyal, civilized, and capable of self-government. Do not be fooled: Abatis de Poulet is...

Edilberto Evangelista: 1897 would-be president?
My Inquirer column today on Edliberto Evangelista who some sources say could have been elected President at the Tejeros Convention instead of Emilio Aguinaldo. Evangelista died in battle before Tejeros. There is a thin line that divides bravery and recklessness, Evangelista pushed his luck too far.

Cultural Treasure in CDO.
The September 1898 Malolos Menu, for food served during the ratification of the June 12 Declaration of Independence, should be, according to Nick Joaquin, equal to the Malolos Constitution because both are reflections of the Filipino nation's coming of age.
The only extant copy in the universe is in Xavier University Museum, Cagayan de Oro. For many years we have only known this menu from a black and white reproduction in Harpers and that was the LUNCH menu, ...

HILARIA DEL ROSARIO DE AGUINALDO.
It's a pity that Women are almost invisible in History because few of them left a written record of their lives and their world.
Most family photos of Emilio Aguinaldo taken in his Kawit Home include his second wife Maria Agoncillo (1930-1963) so not much is known about Emilio Aguinaldo's first wife Hilaria del Rosario (1896-1821) who supported him during the Philippine Revolution. I know of Hilaria only through two thing: a photo of her on horseback an...
