Lunch today was kuhol sa gata with pako. (Snails cooked in fresh coconut miñk garnished with fiddlehead fern). My yaya is always amazed I enjoy country cooking. I let her watch a YT tutorial on escargot a la bourguignonne. “Madali lang yan!” she said. Looking forward to her level up pandemic cooking.

A typical classroom in the Ateneo Municipal de Manila in the early 1900s, helps us imagine what Jose Rizal's student life was like. Jesuit teacher is seated at a desk, on a raised platform that resembles a church pulpit. Contrary to popular belief, Rizal's "colegio" was high school, his Bachiler en Artes a secondary school diploma. What we know as college or a tertiary education was from the University of Santo Tomas.
The second boy from the right doesn't seem to be listening to the lesson, ...

My Inquirer column today summarizes the apalling data on the state of Philippine education based on assessments the Education Secretary claims are "lumang-luma." Instead of taking a recent World Bank report constructively as a means for reform and improvement of the system, she took it personally and even demanded an apology. I am so very disappointed.

Cradle of the Katipunan.
The house on #72 Paseo de Azcarraga (now the corner of Recto and Elcano in downtown Manila) is no more, but we have photos of it (upper and lower Right). Even a prewar bronze plaque, seen on the lower right photo with an arrow. Roughly translated from the original Spanish it reads:
"The Filipino People, by the durability of bronze, consecrates and perpetuates the historical value of this house cradle [of the Revolution] where on 6 July 1892 [new marker states July 7...

Those old enough to remember the old 100-peso bill may not remember a rabid nationalist who railed against the U.S. flag on our currency. Ignorant of history, the image was based on a photograph from July 4, 1946 when the U.S. recognized the independence of the Philippines. Take note, the U.S. did not grant or give independence, it merely returned what it took from the First Republic in 1899. Both banknote and photograph shows the U.S. flag lowered and the Philippine flag hoisted to fly alone fr...

Rizal in the World.
All Filipinos know Rizal travelled a lot, what they don't know is that they will find Rizal in many unexpected places worldwide. Including places he never even visited, like Honolulu where they not only have a Rizal Square they have a Rizal statue too.

From Beer to Skyways: A Brief History of San Miguel.

My Youtube Channel in the Works! Pls subscribe, I need 100 subscribers to get a dedicated link instead of a string of numbers and letters :)

Pending the production of short videos on Philippine history I am sharing recent projects and lectures like: "From Beer to Skyways: A Short History of San Miguel." Produced by the San Miguel Corporation in 2018 it is ably directed by Jason Tan.

An interesting backstory was not being allowed to film the old San Miguel Building in the Malacañang...

Sometimes you see a work of art and your heart skips.
This was the only painting I liked in the last Art Fair online. Seeing the actual work in Silverlens was love at first sight. I acquired it without even knowing the name or reputation of the artist.
Lou Lim, it turns out, is well regarded for exceptional painterly work. quite rare in an art market misled by PR and auction results. I feel validated that Lou Lim is one of the 2021 CCP Thirteen Artists Awardees.
