Having seen historians in their twilight, forgotten and forgetful, I decided to die on or before I turned 50. I wanted to go in my prime, in full command of my faculties but things don't always go as planned.
My phone, email, and message boxes started to swell with greetings that are all very well-received in my second lockdown birthday. FB won't allow me to reply to everyone after a certain number, I tried last year, I want you to know that I garetfully read every message, and pray to tha...

Early Filipino Dentists.
When I first leafed through Filipino Revolutionary newspapers like La Independencia and La Republica Filipina I was drawn to the advertisements on the back page, particularly those for dentists illustrated with dentures or "postiso" (left),
BONIFACIO AREVALO (center) who established his dental practice in 1876 is considered the First Filipino dentist and founder of what is now the Philippine Dental Association.

I once considered getting the three-dot signature of the famous Kalinga tattoo artist Whang Od, but realized that a tattoo would bar me from a Japanese onsen, the hot spring baths that I prefer over a painful souvenir of Kalinga culture.

A mid-17th century Japanese depiction of Pinoys.
"Bankoku Sozu" the first Japanese map of the world, drawn in a Western style, was first printed in 1645 and was reprinted many times into the 18th century.
Aside from geography (left), the map comes with 40 illustrations of couples from all over the world (middle), where you will find a man and woman (right) from "RUSON" [Luzon] in typical costume. What can you say about the way we were re-presented and known by the 17thC Japanese?

This appeared in FB Memories yesterday.
How the world has changed in the past year that I will not be allowed to hold the annual Ayala Museum History Comes Alive Lectures like I did before. With face-to-face audiences of over 600 people. When the lecture took 50 minutes and the book signing took over two hours!
Looking forward to the re-opening of the Ayala Museum this year and reconnecting with people in a socially distanced way.

Count Jean Francois de Galaup La Perouse was a French explorer who crossed the Pacific and stopped in Manila in late 1786 and sent letters home that were published after he disappeared and was never heard from again. One of the charming full page illustrations in his book show the view of Cavite showing Pinoys who kinda look like Europeans. The French edition of this illustration was quite common in flea markets in the 1980s and could be had for as low as the price of a fancy coffee. This image ...
