A Quezon anecdote from National Artist Honorata "Atang" de la Rama is one of many she shared with me on our regular Sunday morning "telebabad." Recording our conversation would be a crime called "wiretapping" but luckily I recorded in my head and sometimes in a notebook now lost in the mess that is my library.

"The Curator of Incendiary Libraries" is a 2016 work by Riel Jaramillo Hilario, a bright light snuffed out by Covid.
These photos show the development from the preliminary drawing to the finished sculpture that now stands guard over my library. Riel said it: "shows an attempt to "rescue"books (and knowledge) that are already smoldering. I was thinking of Aeneas and Rizal's Triumph of Science in making this work."
The work should literally be surrounded by books. Riel said that my "Loo...

History Month reminded me of the first time I visited TEODORO A. AGONCILLO in his QC home. I nearly left upon seeing him in bed, breathing through an oxygen mask. After his wife left the room he sat up, took off the mask talked for four hours until the wife returned and politely gestured that the historian needed to rest. He inscribed one of his books with what I called “lightning scrawl.” That meeting probably led me to follow the path of Clio.

RIZAL'S BLOOD ON A HANDKERCHIEF?
My friend Malou Villaroman showed Freud the handkerchief (Left) of her great-great grandmother, Saturnina Rizal de Hidalgo (Upper right detail of initials).
There is a story that one of Rizal's sisters went to Luneta after the execution carrying a stack of handkerchiefs that she then dipped in the spot where he fell. These bloodied handkerchiefs were then distributed to family members as souvenirs. When I asked Malou if they had one of these relics she s...

In another place, another time, today is my feastday (I was once Dom. Ignacio Maria).
I received a precious gift-- Ibarra, a locally-made, automatic, dress watch. Limited edition for the Knights of Rizal. Thanks to Sir Mark Boado for his thoughtfulness that made my day.
