History in color.
I was fortunate to have met both Presidents Cory and Pnoy. A black and white image, circa 1986, from the photo file of my friend SG-based artist Dengcoy Miel was colorized by Jeric Benitez (I told him Cory wore yellow, and Joe Burgos on her right wore a khaki-color bush jacket). This was taken in Malacañang after an event in Maharlika Hall, in the old days when we were all young journalists wrapped in the euphoria that was Cory-magic and the afterglow of EDSA 1986. A great time...

2011 Jakarta--I am standing by the entrance of Plaza Indonesia waiting for a cab. President Aquino emerged from the hotel on his way to the State Dinner, he shook my hand, gave me a second look and said: "you look familiar." At a loss for words, I replied: "you too!"
My Inquirer column today on the five times I met him: three when he was President, two when he was plain Citizen Noynoy. Having a common interest in History, I now regret not getting to know him better.

Sad to hear of his passing this morning.
To paraphrase Rizal:
“one only lives once, and if one does not live well, a good opportunity is lost and will not present itself again.”
Remembering a happier time, when Benigno S. Aquino, III conferred the Presidential Medal of Merit in Tokyo . (2013).

Araw ng Maynila Online Lecture No. 5: “Manila in the Past Tense” | 24 June 2021, 1 PM
Join us on the final Araw ng Maynila Lecture Series with Dr. Ambeth Ocampo of the Ateneo de Manila University as he asks why is it that when we talk of Manila today, we often do so in the past tense? Long before Metro-Manila, Greater Manila, there was Spanish Manila that was literally the capital city within the walls hence Intramuros. Manila was already there when the Spanish occupied it 450 years ago. The fo...

Last Saturday, I read these two bronze plaques inside the Manila Cathedral. The first that lists the Archbishops of Manila from the 16th century to the latest Cardinal Tagle who was called to Rome in 2019 was already full with 32 names. The second plaque, from afar looked like a blank TV, had the name of Jose F. Cardinal Advincula.
My Inquirer column today argues that the Cardinal who takes possession of the Archdiocese tomorrow is the 33rd Bishop of Manila, but only the 32nd Archbishop.

From the ground, from afar, Rizal doesnt look big in the monument. To get a sense of scale compare my hand with Rizal’s bronze right hand.
Up there I not only saw the two signatures of Richard Kissling the sculptor, but also the small holes and pockmarks left on the monument from World War 2.

Freud from the choir loft of the Manila Cathedral looking up at the largest pipe organ in the Philippines. Behind him the nave and main altar. We were given a personal tour by Cathedral Vice-Rector Fr. Kali Llamado from the crypt underground to the rooftop. #ambethocampo #thefilipinohistorian #lookingback #freud #manila #cathedral
