Sometimes we need a light amusing column in the Opinion-Editorial page.
My column today is on food that defines us in the eyes of others. My experience ingesting balut and tuna eyes the size of golf balls.

HISTORY UP CLOSE. (Every Thursday)
What was once known as the “Philippine Insurgent Records” (PIR) in the U.S. National Archives has been renamed the “Philippine Revolutionary Records” by the National Library of the Philippines where it is now preserved.
This curious document in PRR is a fawning letter from Jullana [Juliana] Valerina, wife of General Pio del Pilar to Hilaria [Yayang] del Rosario, wife of Emilio Aguinaldo.
Sent from Makati on 1 July 1899 the letter accompanied a...

If I were teleported to Manila in 1593 I guess my 21st century Filipino can be understood by 16th century Tagalogs. One of the earliest books published in the Philippines, Doctrina Cristiana (1593), used to spread the faith, supplied basic Christian Doctrine in Tagalog both in the Roman Alphabet and Baybayin! See the Ama namin in its earliest Tagalog translation and compare it with the 2018 Pinoy Version of the Bible that renders the mocking of Christ as "pinag-tripan nila si Kristo."
My Inq...

ART IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY (appears every Tuesday).
Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo made two fine portraits of his mother, Maria Barbara Padilla in 1888 and again in 1897. Preserved in the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Collection.
Doña Baritay had successful business interests in Manila, Bulacan and the Visayas all documented through her correspondence with her caretakers and representatives of foreign trading firms in Manila and Iloilo. A history of 19th century women in business should be w...

TODAY in PH History.
On 18 October 1970 Floro Crisologo was assassinated while attending mass in the Vigan Cathedral. A series of photos showing the politician lying in a pool of his own blood is one of the gruesome exhibits in the Crisologo museum a reminder that politics in the North was marked by violence and mayhem. On the same day Ferdinand Marcos wrote in his diary:
“Floring Crisologo was shot dead while kneeling down to take communion at 1640 hrs in the cathedral at Vigan, Ilocos S...

RIZAL AS AN OLD MAN.
In 1960 the artist Gene Cabrera drew what Rizal would look like had he not been shot in Bagumbayan on December 30, 1896 at age 35. There is fantastic story on Youtube that insists history we learned in school is wrong: Rizal lived to 113 years, controlled the wealth of the world under different names, and entrusted all of it, 470,000 metric tons of gold to his legal counsel, Ferdinand E. Marcos!
My Inquirer column today details part of the Youtube video I could not...

HISTORY UP CLOSE.
Detail from a list of students who passed various exams in the Ateneo Municipal at the end of the academic year 1876-77. Fr. Jose Vilaclara, S.J attested to those granted the Bachelor of Arts in March 1877.
Of the twelve students who graduated in 1877, three had the grade Aprobado (Good) and nine sobresaliente. How can Rizal graduate “at the top of his class,” as we are taught in classroom history, when there were eight other students with the same grade?
Years late...
