My Inquirer column today is on William Howard Taft's short interview with the superior of the Benedictines in Manila in 1900. While he inquired into friar lands with other religious orders and asked about their relationship with Filipinos, with the monk Taft did all the talking about Benedictine liqueur, even advising the Manila community to tap into a gold mine by brewing a liqueur from their secret recipe.

ART in HISTORY.
Fernando Amorsolo's "Palay Maiden" (Ayala Museum Collection) was painted in 1920. Look beyond the beauty of the painting and its subject, pay attention to her red skirt, white blouse, and blue head scarf. Then, focus on the golden, freshly harvested rice in her arms. All these elements together prefigure the Philippine flag.
Long before Ferdinand Marcos and KBL appropriated red, white, and blue as their political colors, these were largely neutral colors first associate...

TODAY IN HISTORY.
On October 11, 1896 Ramon Blanco, Marques de Peñaplata, Spanish Governor General of the Philippines (1893-96) began a futile attraction and pacification policy in the hope of ending the Philippine Revolution and encouraging Katipuneros to surrender. It was too late.
On August 30, 1896 following the outbreak of the revolution, Blanco placed the following Luzon provinces under Martial Law: Manila, Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, and Tarlac. That is ...

Passport applications from the time when the Philippines as an "insular possession" of the U.S.A.are now available online. The documents are quite interesting, especially the attached photos. But one has to see what an actual passport looked like. That issued in Rome to National artist Guillermo Tolentino in 1924 is larger than an A4 sheet!. He was described as a student with black hair, brown eyes, brown complexion, broad nose, medium mouth, and regular chin. Born in Malolos on July 30, 1891.

Lectures like this are just a memory.
In a face to face set up one teacher faces one class. Online on zoom this semester I am one teacher facing 185 different classes, because I have students in different places and timezones: MetroManila, the provinces and even abroad.
It took a pandemic to remind me that teachers should encourage rather than rate learning.
Link to my Inquirer column today is on the first comment below, hope you can read it and share.
