ILOILO is one of my favorite cities.
Spent the weekend there enjoying its good food, lots of heritage, and meeting up with two Ilonggo collectors who shared their treasures during my visit: MARIO YANG (Top Right) who has everything from pre-Spanish artifacts, colonial religious imagery to Philippine paintings; and ARSENIO RAFAEL (Bottom Right) whose Metro Ilolo Modern Arts Park has a seven-storey stairwell filled with contemporary Philippine paintings and sculptures.
Now that I have wings (Left...

Surrexit Dominus vere.
A 19th century engraving by Ysidro Paulino made in San Miguel. Restrike from the original copperplate by Impy Pilapil c. 1980. This image is clearer in its details than the one reproduced in Filipino Engraving (1980) by Rod. Paras Perez, et al.

Gregoria de Jesus, widow of Andres Bonifacio, married Julio Nakpil who composed "Pamitinan" in 1897. My Inquirer column today is about April 12, 1895 a date lost to history that can be considered another option for Independence Day rather than June 12, 1898.
lT. M. Kalaw wrote that Andres Bonifacio hurled "the first declaration of rebellion against Spain" on April 12, 1895. Because it was Good Friday the Katipuneros did not shout, rather they wrote "Viva la independencia de Filipinas" on a...

Rant on GLOBE Customer Service.
I always hear about bad customer service from GLOBE and I did not realize that the company actually lacks genuine customer service until I had to endure it yesterday in the Globe Glorietta branch. Both the Globe Website and the Globe FB Page does not provide a way to lodge a formal complaint. I tried Globe on Messenger and received an automated reply that irritated me even more.
I went to Globe Glorietta on the afternoon of April 11, 2022 to have them look at...

Obsolete encyclopedias

Sorry for the late posting.
My Inquirer column today opens with "Cornejo's" perhaps the heaviest single book in my library. I used it more as a door stopper than a desk reference.

Cornejo’s “Commonwealth Directory of the Philippines” (1939) is the thickest book in my library, its width at 4.5 inches or 11 centimeters. Elegantly hardbound in red with gold stamping, the

Walking history again after two years. Intramuros is where visual aids are larger than life, where students can experience history first hand outside a closed classroom. Despite all the walking and my stories I presume there are wide smiles hidden under those masks.

"Try this on your head" was the handwritten note on this photograph by LUTHER PARKER (1872-1948?) who arrived in the Philippines in 1901 and served with the Bureau of Education till 1926. Aside from teaching he did research on Philippine history and left us with an album of photographs, preserved in the National Library of the Philippines, that capture life in prewar times. He returned to the U.S. in 1931 and its a pity that his library (and notes) were sold and dispersed in 1949.

Advance 80th birthday dinner for BenCab at Milky Way. Cochinillo, karekare, lumpiabg ubod (para may gulay) then Malu Gamboa provided shangrila, halohalo, and a slice of cake to inch the maestro closer to disbetes. A good time was had by all, first time together in our happy place eating happy food.
