Highlighting a work by Juan Luna in the coming Leon Gallery auction is an engaging catalogue essay by Lisa Nakpil illustrated with a little known photograph of Juan Luna (much clearer than the one I have on file). Unfortunately, the auction catalog does not provide a background on the photo, taken in Paris in the 1880's, nor the identity of each individual in the photo who are:
(Topmost) Juan Luna, in ancient Roman toga;
Second row: (Left) the scholar and later Philippine Commissione...

On February 24, 1986 Juan Ponce Enrile addressed the crowd at EDSA with the premature news that Marcos had fled Malacañang, this caused Fidel V. Ramos to jump with joy. For over three decades, till 2018, Ramos would re-enact the historic jump during EDSA commemorations.
Watching a video of the 1986 jump with him in his Makati office some years ago I noticed a hand come behind him that tugged at his belt to secure him. This photo shows the swift hand of the aide that helped maintain his balan...

When in Rome...be touched by the finger of God.
Or the next best thing, the hand of genius that is Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel.
Sorry my face is dark---no flash selfies allowed.

La Loba Negra (Black She-wolf) is a novel previously attributed to Fr. Jose Burgos. It has been proven a forgery by Jose E. Marco. A page from the "original manuscript" (left) is signed with a signature that does not match those of the real Burgos in archival documents. A typescript (Right) corrected by Claro M. Recto shows that "Burgos" wrote so badly.
Loba Negra, even if its a forrgery, has taken on a life of its own, recast as a play by Virginia Moreno (Itim Asu/Onyx Wolf) and even a dance.

Fake news on a historical landmark.
In the popular imagination Gomburza died slowly and painfully by strangulation by the garrote. While terrifying the garrote was supposed to dispatch victims quickly, and in principle, painlessly. When the screw was turned the neck was broken. Unfortunately, nobody has survived to tell us whether this method is effective or not.
Textbook history and the markers on the Gomburza site in Rizal park (middle) that mention death by strangulation need to be...

Today is the 150th anniversary of the execution of GOMBURZA.
Textbook history tells us that Rizal dedicated El Filibusterismo to the three martyred priests. In the original manuscript of the Fili the dedication page (Top)reads:
“Francisco (sic) Gomez (sic), Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora executed on the gallows of Bagumbayan on __February 1872.”
In the printed edition of the Fili, first published in Ghent in 1891, (Bottom) the dedication reads:
“To the memory of the priests Mariano Gome...

What is it in our flag, often overlooked and sometimes insulted at home, that brings pride to the Filipino who sees it abroad?
Seeing the Philippine flag fluttering in the wind together with the flags of 191 other nations participating in the 2020 Dubai Expo reminded me of Rizal who attended the 1889 Paris Expo when the Philippines was a Spanish colony, and he a Spanish subject.
My Inquirer column today is on the Philippine Pavilion in the 2020 Expo and Rizal encountering Javanese at...
