The Santo Niño de Cebu (Left) has a "cousin" in the Louvre Museum in Paris (Right), a wood image carved and painted from the same mid-15th century Flemish workshop in Mechelen (Malines). Since we have no photographs of the Santo Niño de Cebu without its finery and jewelry, the Louvre image helps us imagine what the Cebu image looked like when it was presented by Magellan to the Queen of Cebu after he baptism in 1521.
My Inquirer column today is on the Santo Niño as shapeshifter, who is als...

This is not some random historical photograph from my archive.
My mother worked in the Philippine Travel and Tourism Bureau (forerunner of today's Department of Tourism) before she got married and had me. Aside from posing in Filipiniana attire for tourist posters and promotion, she was often asked to meet VIPs at the international airport or the pier with smiles and garlands.
She would have been 89 today.

Historian's adventures.
During a quick visit to the British Library in 2019, I requested the 1609 edition of Antonio de Morga's "Sucesos de las islas Filipinas (right). It is an extremely rare book (less than 50 known copies in the universe) made more so because Jose Rizal copied it out by hand. There was no photocopier, scanner, or smartphone in his time.
Rizal spent his time in London in the summer of 1889 copying the Morga in the daytime, enriching it at night with very long notes ...

What do you prefer? The King's [George III] Library as it was arranged in wood and glass at the British Museum pre-1997 (top) or the collection displayed in a gleaming tower of glass and metal in the present British Library?
My Inquirer column today looks back on the British Library in London as I knew it as a postgrad student in the early 1990s.
