December 8 was marked in old calendars as the feast of the Inmaculada Concepcion (not Immaculada) and girls born on this day were often christened Concepcion, sometimes Maria Concepcion hence the Pinoy nickname “Maricon” that refers to a limp-wristed gay man in Spanish macho culture.
The grand staircase of the Ateneo Municipal de Manila in Intramuros was destroyed by fire in 1932, and what was left of the rebuilt campus destroyed again in the 1945 Battle for Manila. The staircase lives on in mem...

DETAILS.
Portraits in the age before smartphones, were meticulously painted. Leticia Jimenez was captured in all her finery, and down to the finest detail sometime in the 1870's by an artist whose name is lost to history.
Bango Sentral ng Pilipinas Collection presently displayed in the National Museum of the Philippines.

Imagine a tablet bigger than you. Found my book included in the 500 objects whose images you can view and enlarge on the Ayala Museum’s DigiWall.

This content isn't available right now

Ayala Museum re-opened yesterday after two years of hibernation. The renovated lobby with the digital wall featuring 500 museum objects is like a giant tablet that shows you details and information you won't normally see in the halls.
Catch a glimpse of the future at 1.01 if the video and let me know what you think in the Comments.

Can vegetables replace blooms in floral arrangements? Maye Gutierrez did just that and displayed her wares as Edible Blooms in Salcedo Market.
I suggested she name arrangements after the main ingredients in Pinoy dishes. For example, nilaga can be built from: cabbage, potatoes, string beans, onions etc. Sinigang can have tamarind, gabi, radish etc. the challenge is finding and arranging pretty veggies.

Libraries as autobiography.
Pandemic lockdown allowed me to organize my study and clear the worktable. Problem with books and files is that only the user/owner can arrange it to make retrieval easy. Since this photo was taken last year clutter has grown on the tabletop again--with a vengeance. Thanks to Martin Arnaldo for the photo.

Fernando Amorsolo with portraits of three Commonwealth presidents: Manuel Roxas, Manuel Quezon, and Sergio Osmeña. I've always wondered what the commercial side of Amorsolo's art was like and found some clues in his correspondence. My Inquirer column today is on Luxury and Amorsolo at auction:

Sorry that the first 200 copies of presigned Queridas de Rizal in blue ink ran out. To make up I have inscribed in my trademark green and even affixed a special stamp on another 200 copies perfect for gifts this Christmas. A book is cheaper than a gift basket, better appreciated a greeting card that costs as much but is thrown away aftwerwards.
When buying online from Shoppee or Lazada make sure you are buying from ANVIL not a reseller. Its cheaper and probably autographed too.
