These photographs from the collection of Dean C. Worcester are part of a larger collection of ethnographic and geographical documentation of the Philippines and the Filipinos in the early 1900s. Documentation of the U.S.trying to understand her far-off colony.
I chose these two wondering what it was like for upland Filipinos to encounter new technology for the first time: the phonograph, the motor car, and, of course, hidden from our view, the camera that captured these images.

We are so used to having portraits on the face of our banknotes we don't even want to consider or imagine having something else on them. For example, the beautiful Mayon Volcano appeared on the face of the prewar Silver certificate that could be exchanged for its value, twenty pesos, in physical gold or silver coins.

"MORO UMBRELLA."
Elizabeth Keith (1887-1956) was a British artist who made a number of fine woodcuts of scenes from her travels around Asia that included thePhilippines. “Moro umbrella” is perhaps the most charming of her Filipiniana images. Quite small at 8 x 6 inches nobody paid any attention to it at the Heritage Art Gallery in the 1980s and if I had asked for it, and pleaded that I was a student on allowance, Mario Alcantara would have given it to me for a song. This is one of many regrets i...

Bullfights in Manila.
One wonders what foreign influences take root and stay in our long history. Americans intoduced baseball but basketball took root. We used to have Jai-alai and that went out of fashion too. But bullfights? On the edge of the photograph you can clearly see the clock tower of Manila City Hall. I wonder why bullfighting did not catch on despite three centuries of Spanish rule. Photo from the S.D. Quiason Library, NHCP.
