Fun with party list names
Voters in May will be surprised to find 173 Party List groups on the ballot. This will remind us of True or False tests we endured in K-12. My Inquirer column is a look at the list, a light moment in our political life and choices.

A Tsinoy friend advised me years ago to refrain from the crass materialistic "kung hei fat choy" New Year Greeting that was easy to remember as: "Hey you! Fat boy!"
I could not remember nor pronounce the elegant, classical Chinese New Year greeting I was taught so even before the pandemic I have been using 笑口常开 (xiào kǒu cháng kāi) a greeting that hopes that we smile and laugh more in the coming year.

Worried his manuscript autobiography "Memories of a Manila Student" would fall into the wrong hands and be read by others, Jose Rizal hid under the pseudonym "P. Jacinto." (Upper photo shows the cover page of the manuscript).
On the first page "My birth--my early years" (Lower photo) he hid his identity further by crossing out his place of birth, but left his birthday: "I was born in [Calamba erased] on 19 June 1861 between 11 and midnight, a few days before the full moon."

My Inquirer column today is about references to Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. in the diaries of Marcos, Sr.

Some pleasures in life are free.
Japan has an amazing variety of man-hole covers; different in each city, and region. I have photo of these, some shared on this FB Page.
I noticed recently, during my aimless morning walks around Makati, that we have different man-hole covers too. Documenting these I realized that unlike the Japanese manhole covers, ours remain on the base, utilitarian level. I hope to see the day that these everyday objects can be raised to the level of art.
