My Inquirer column today was inspired by a scrapbook of obituaries from 1935-1963. Quite a morbid subject to collect but it forms bits and pieces of historical informatoion. Scrapbooks preserve the past for future reference that's why archives libraries and museums are important has repositories of our past.

MY SAD REPUBLIC by BenCab
"After more than a century since the revolution against colonial powers, ODE TO THE FLAG reminds us that the fight is not yet over, and suggests that our flag, as yet, does not fly in skies that are truly free."
- Exhibition Notes, ODE TO THE FLAG, BenCab Museum 2015.

Scissors never touched my mother's hair from childhood.
She could have been known as Rapunzel, or made a living as a shampoo endorser, but the first thing she did when she got married was to cut her hair.
Found this magazine clipping from the 1950's in her scrapbook.
Happy Mothers Day!

I HOPE MY BIG LECTURE CLASSES CONTINUE.
Excited to teach a hybrid class (partly online, partly onsite) soon, but disappointed that I cannot have the pre-pandemic maxi-size or Magisterial classes anymore.

ARTIFACTS THAT TELL STORIES.
This week I will check if the World War 2 cannon hidden inside the walls of Intramuros, near the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, is still there. Has it been disarmed? It points in the direction of the Rizal Monument.
On my last Intramuros visit I saw this bronze cannon near the Bastion de San Diego (Left) that is so clean and shiny from all the hands that caressed it over the centuries. I trace the letters V-O-C A[msterdam] on the cannon (Right), with my...
