Lifetime(s) ambition(s)

(741 words)

I think being pre-occupied with death is a not unhealthy byproduct of being occupied with life.

So many ways to die means there ought to be just one way to live and that’s exuberantly. I’ve felt that way ever since it dawned on me that I, aw shucks, wasn’t going to live forever.

It’s becoming more acute with me lately. It’s either the near daily news reminder I could get

Jokin' 'bout the joys of jail

(693 words)

It would be a better story if I could honestly say I was there the night Capt. Tony told my buddies he didn’t respect any man who hadn’t spent at least one night in jail.

But that wouldn’t be the truth.

It was Spring Break back in 1985 and my buddies were in Key West while I was back home in Pittsburgh (no dough). And it would be an even better story if I could honestly

Words & how the dildo got stuck in my head

(740 words)

I’m uncertain how I got the dildo stuck in my head, but I can assure you it didn’t enter through one of my ears. Heck, I know better to shove a cotton-tipped swab in there let alone a big honking dildo.

Blame the Oxford English Dictionary. That’s up in my head, too, and it’s way, way bigger (135 pounds) than your common love toy.

See, I’m a word guy. Words fascinate me. I

July Tweets of the Month

These tweets are from 8Days2Amish. For those who prefer longer form posts, check back around noon today when I’ll post something meatier. It’s about dildos.

• It says something wonderful about simple human decency that ever since word got 'round I have an incurable disease more people have told me I look great than ever told me back when, gee, I really looked great.

• Being

My Tin Lizzy ghost story

(653 words)

I’m often asked if I think the Tin Lizzy is haunted and my answer’s always been what you might call ghostly equivocation.

I said I was the kind of guy who didn’t believe in ghosts, but felt too spooked to be in the old building after dark and all alone.

Last week, my answer changed.

I still can’t say I’ve seen a ghost, but I can now honestly say I think I felt one.

Finally getting around to writing about procrastination

(759 words)

My friend Jim S. of Bovard was putting off more pressing matters to read a story about procrastination cures when, alas, his mind began to drift.

Was reading a story about how to stop wasting time a waste of time?

“It made me wonder how many hours I’ve spent reading about procrastination cures while I should have been doing something else. Then I thought, ‘This sounds

It's my new car! Yeah right ...

(668 words)

My family is disappointed I’m not more excited about having purchased what they’re misleadingly calling my “new” car.

Setting aside the fact that one of the keys to happiness is to avoid letting the emotional reactions of others determine yours, I’m a stickler for accuracy and reject their description that my car is “new.”

“Current” is better. So is “latest.” Or “most

Rogers book excerpts & my vehicular homage to "Tallahassee"

“They were helicopter parents years before most Americans had ever even seen a helicopter. That’s what most parenting “experts” would say about the way James and Nancy Rogers raised the baby they named Fred McFeely Rogers, born March 20, 1928. They refused to allow him to mingle with common classmates. They spoiled him, smothered him with parental love. What this says about a widely derided

Bad golf & stories of our lost virginity

(792 words)

The much anticipated round of golf at Olde Stonewall, one of Pennsylvania’s finest golf courses, hadn’t gone as we’d hoped. We’d all played poorly.

Clubs were broken, profanities shouted and questions considered about the wisdom of ever golfing again.

As one who by now has been golfing badly for nearly 50 years, it was up to me to save the memory of what would have been

Tweets of the Month ... a day early!

Big graduation party tomorrow, so I’m moving up the traditional month-ending 8Days2Amish tweet round-up by one day. Heartfelt apologies if this deviation throws you into confusion. Have a great weekend and thanks for all your encouragement, cheer and support!
