Don’t sacrifice the HERE and NOW

My favourite lines from a John Lennon song are,
“Life is just what happens to you,While you’re busy making other plans.”
How true is that? How sad it is that many of us spend all our time chasing and making plans for the future and don’t appreciate the here and now.  The lyrics are from the song Beautiful Boy from the Double Fantasy album, probably one of the most influential albums of my teenage life, along with Legend by Bob Marley.
Today (Friday) was icy and cold in Leeds, sadly no snow. The boys were in good form and lively – rare on a morning but we all love Friday!! Lucas had his class assembly to perform. The sky was clear blue with the rising sun reflecting on the pink candy floss clouds.  It was truly stunning and put me in a great, positive mood.
Meniere’s has taught me to really appreciate the simple things in life and there is nothing simpler than the nature around us. Anyway, I was sitting in the school hall waiting for the assembly to start when Lucas’ Dad arrived. He sat next to me and started moaning about life, the weather, etc., etc. I couldn’t help myself. I interrupted him with something along the lines of ‘just once it would be nice for you to greet me with a really positive thought. Yes, it’s cold but it is also beautiful and sunny.’ He pulled the usual face. During the awkward silence, I sat, actually really pleased with myself. I knew then the exact reason why we never lasted, that and his short fuse!!
I like my positive outlook. Don’t get me wrong even I have doubting days or ‘Eeyore’ days but our philosophy is don’t moan about it, do something about it!! So, get to it…
RIP David Bowie and RIP Alan Rickman
Honestly, it has been a sad week with the loss of two iconic men, iconic for very different reasons. Some of David Bowie’s early work was a bit too ‘far out’ for me and I was a bit young! Now I appreciate it more. However, during the 1980s Bowie’s music and videos had a huge influence on me. I will never forget the video to ‘Let’s Dance’ and his performance on Live Aid. I loved his creativity and his bravery to be who he wanted to be.  There are very few people who won’t sell their beliefs for fame. He NEVER did.
Alan Rickman was, and always will be, my favourite British actor, although Shaun Evans is a very close second. I first saw Alan Rickman in Truly, Madly, Deeply and I fell in love with him. He had an amazing talent to captivate the audience. My favourite line was when he played the Sheriff of Nottingham in Prince of Thieves. ‘Cancel the kitchen scraps for lepers and orphans, no more merciful beheadings and call off Christmas.’ His delivery was truly unique.
When he played Snape in Harry Potter, my emotions were torn. It was hard to hate a man being portrayed by someone you love watching. He was simply brilliant at each role he played and he will be sorely missed.

This weekIt has been a really busy week.  I’ve been researching and putting the final touches to my PhD proposal. That’s my work for this weekend too. I need to be kinder to myself and stop setting such tight deadlines!
I have been ruthlessly editing Beyond the Lies whilst coming to terms with a new training routine, which has definitely been challenging. I never realized how organised I was until the plans changed. Flexibility only works if your brain can cope with it. A few weeks in and I won’t remember the last routine…I hope.
Please, if you have time, take a moment to vote for my blog in the UK Blog Awards. Your support really does mean a lot to me.

FABULOUS start to 2016...

If there is one thing this Christmas break has taught me, it is time off is definitely more productive than keeping going, although I did work over the Christmas period but I paced myself in between board games and chill time with the boys. Having said that, I have really enjoyed getting back into the routine of writing, editing, parenting and the school runs!
Looking back, 2015 was a testing year – very testing at times but also showed glimpses of hope for the future.
It was really hard to ignore unjustified attacks on me by a couple of people carrying on this sick and twisted vendetta yet showing little backbone by trying to hide behind aliases. The trouble is when you have good friends who understand social media and have legal backgrounds, their aliases were not really anonymous. I had to step out of my own principles and beliefs to protect my own family and my sanity. I did expose them and although I hated doing it, it was the right thing to do at the time and hopefully it has worked although I wouldn’t know as I have a great person monitoring it for me. It is less stressful to have a friend who is mad enough to enjoy social media! I am not prepared to take criticism based on a red mist fueled hatred just because my son and I work hard to reach our goals. Wes earned, YES EARNED his place in rugby league and no amount of hatred is going to change that. Get over it! As my Dad would say, “Tough Titty!” If only people would spend as much energy chasing their goals, eh!
Rugby League
We are thrilled Wes has entered the Reserve grade at Sheffield Eagles. It is a huge achievement and I am so proud of his work ethic, his outlook on life and his sheer determination to succeed. We are all looking forward to the new challenges of next season.

Even Lucas is ready! Courtesy of Grandma Dot’s Christmas present.
UK Blog Award 2016
This week has been such a productive week. On Monday, the voting for this year’s UK Blog Awards opened. I am thrilled to be short listed in two categories for the second year running, up against some tough opposition.

I am half way through the edit – YAY!! This will definitely be published in 2016!
Streetwise
Following constructive feedback, I am pleased to say this is out in the market place. Very hopeful.
New Ideas
One great bi-product of time off, is the time to think. Over the Christmas period, three new ideas were added to the growing list. A great position to be in with over twenty unique ideas.
PhD Update
This is my biggest aim for 2016, to start studying again. It is a very personal goal and as you may have gathered, once I set my mind to something…watch this space.
Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour
As you all know I am a socialist. I am now a proud member of the Writer’s Guild of Great Britain. It is really important for me to support the trade union movement and now I qualify to be a member. I am so pleased the ties have been strengthened between the Labour party and the trade unions. The New Labour was not for me – too close to the Tory policies. Now they are more aligned with my beliefs. I am a huge fan of Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell, although my views do tend to lean further left than theirs! What I love the most is their determination NOT to pander to the right wing media, their personality traits of kindness and empathy and their unbelievably genuine desire to serve unselfishly in public office. It is time we stopped the media and the bankers from running our politicians. It is time for a change – our community spirit in Yorkshire has been demonstrated over the recent floods, as Liverpool have shown through Hillsborough and how we can show collectively.
WE CAN change the way this country is being run BUT we have to stick together.  It is time our elected members represented US and not themselves.
One final note on the Labour MPs who have used the right wing media to try and damage Jeremy Corbyn – you have only damaged Labour and yourselves. If we, as employees in the real world, publicly attempted to humiliate our employers, we would be suspended and face a gross misconduct disciplinary. These MPs have only demonstrated to me their desire to put themselves first rather than their constituents and the party. They don’t share my labour values! They certainly don’t represent me as a party member or a UK citizen. Let’s concentrate on accountability for the failing economy, safeguard our NHS, protect our Trade Unions and provide a decent life for EVERYONE!
Have a fabulous weekend and a productive week!

All’s well that ends well

This is my last blog of 2015. Can you believe it? Another year gone – not sure if another year wiser but definitely another year older and greyer!
My home town is Leeds and I love being a Yorkshire lass. It has been truly devastating watching the horrendous floods unfold around us – we are in the middle of Otley, Wetherby, Leeds centre, York, Tadcaster and Castleford. We are the
fortunate ones but my heart truly goes out to everyone affected by these, in my opinion, preventable events, especially when our politicians were warned in advance that this could happen. As an Insurance Broker of twenty years, I have helped families and businesses get back on their feet after disasters and I tell you it is soul destroying to see all your hard work swept away when you have done everything in your powers. Let’s hope the government listens this time and do not arrogantly dismiss the expert opinion. My love to you all.
It has been two years of a hard slog to finally get peace from the spiteful people who tried so desperately to ruin Wes’ chances to play rugby league. They failed but it was a nightmare period for us especially when I was fighting Meniere’s and developing my writing career. Thankfully, they have now finally moved on and we can categorically say PEACE at last.
Christmas for me is about the children. They take over – decide on the food and the entertainment. I know it’s not the done thing but I want them to look back on Christmas as a peaceful time of year. We are so busy all year running between work, school and Sheffield that it is just nice to have some family down time. We have no rules, no plans and it works for us. Thankfully, the boys are sports mad so we spend time watching programmes I love too – World’s Strongest Man, Darts, Football, NFL and others. It’s great. On top of that we play board games – scrabble, game of life, frustration, ludo, trivial pursuit (although Lucas calls it Truppy up the soup!). Even the cards and dominoes came out this year. We have had such a laugh. It has been truly relaxing and magical.
Christmas Eve we had an amazing day at the cinema. I got to take my two gorgeous boys to carry on my childhood love of STAR WARS. WOW! WOW! WOW! I have goosebumps thinking about Lucas’ excited face when the titles started. I’ve loved Star Wars all my life and that’s a lot of years! My nickname is R2D2 (all body and no legs apparently!). It was truly magical and amazing. I love that they love it as much as I do. In fact, Lucas is obsessed! He is my very own personal Jedi knight. Well done and thank you Disney – another family dream and memory created.
Before moving into 2016, I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all your support this year. You have no idea what it means to me and your support has helped me to realise my dreams. You kept me going when it all looked so hopeless. Thank you and I wish you all the very best in 2016. I hope you go and make your dreams come true.
2016 is OUR kick ass year. It feels like the last couple of years have been sowing seed years and have been blooming frustrating at times. BUT, 2016 brings us so much hope.

Wes is in the Sheffield Eagles Academy/Reserves.Wes will be going to Uni this year and he reaches 18!! My baby…time flies! Lucas turns 10 and is growing into a very clever, level headed young man, determined to achieve his goals – can’t imagine where he gets that from!I have supervisory backing for my PhD and hopefully, fingers crossed, financial support for 2016.My second book will be publishedMy TV scripts will hopefully be acceptedI will continue to write and have lots of new ideas and storylines.Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell will continue to provide new hope and decency to this country. My lovely Dad will be 70.I will continue to raise awareness of Meniere’s disease – one day there may even be a cure! So you see, life may have been tough but 2015 set up 2016 to be a very special year, not just for me but for all of us. We are working tirelessly to achieve our success in spite of all the obstacles thrown at us. We leave 2015 a stronger, closer and better educated family. However desperate it has seemed, we have survived again.

All the very best for 2016. May the force be with you…

The Highs of Lows of 2015

Honestly the biggest lesson of 2015 - you could save hundreds of people from a burning building and some people would still paint you as the villain. That’s life. Let them get on with it. If people are stupid enough to believe it, then that is their problem. I would rather do what is right than back off and let someone else do what should be done.
Exposing peoples’ lies is one of the hardest and bravest things to do as is standing alone and standing up for your principles. I could have a much easier life by turning a blind eye and letting people walk all over me and my children. However, what sort of life would that be? Even worse, what sort of example does that set for my children? I may have to work on the delivery of my exposure (no-one’s perfect!), nonetheless 2016 will be the year of building on this year’s foundation of eradicating all the issues that have caused previous problems and held us back from fulfilling our dreams and having a peaceful life. I am proud of myself for sticking to my beliefs, not so proud of leaving it so long.
I have received continuous criticism of my parenting skills yet I have two very grounded, well-educated and clever boys. What’s more important than any academic results, is their understanding of life and how society works. They have a good grounding in social justice, truth, honesty and a phenomenal work ethic. They are developing as leaders not followers. SO to all my critics – my boys aren’t perfect but they are perfectly aware of how to work effectively within society without being single minded bigots.

My Top 5 successes of 2015
Seeing Wes develop in his rugby league career. No obstacle has been too high.Seeing Lucas overcome health problems to excelling at school and turning into a boy who is confident to debate politics with adults!! My re-connection with the Labour Party. I have always been a socialist and had socialist values but I lost connection with the Labour Party. They became too right centre for me. To accept austerity was the breaking point and Ed Miliband posing with The Sun! Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell are two of the most intelligent and arbitrary men I have come across in politics. The fact they don’t compromise their core beliefs is a breath of fresh air for me. I am proud of standing my ground, often standing alone, for many years and super proud we now have a leader who will serve the people of this country for THEM not for personal gain.I have developed so many new skills this year – planning my PhD study, book promotional work, marketing, book-keeping, script writing, editing, proofreading, the list is endless. For so many years, my brain was stagnant doing the same job day in day out. I can honestly say THANK YOU MENIERES.  I may have days when my brain won’t work but on the days that is does – WOW! WOW! WOW!Learning the art of script writing. Another new skill I would not have developed had it not been for a forced change in direction. The feedback I received from an industry specialist for my FIRST work has spurred me on to follow my quest for success. I am so thankful
2015 has very much felt like a development year and may not have reaped any financial rewards yet, I am richer than I think… money is NOT everything.
I want to thank Wes and Lucas for their unwavering support through this year. They know how tough it has been yet they have never stopped loving and supporting me. We are an invincible team. I am so, so proud of all three of us, sticking together and working through the good and bad times. I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of their successes at school and in sport. We have built a very secure family unit. 2016 will be amazing, I know it will.   Thank you to all the doubters, critics and cowards hiding behind their keyboards. Without the lows you created, I would not be sitting here reflecting on how lucky I am to have such amazing people in my life. Most of all, thank you to all my unknown supporters this year - you've bought my book, followed my social media and blog. I appreciate all your support.
I am a very proud Mum, writer, socialist and caring human being.
So, this is my last post before Christmas. I want to wish everyone from across the globe a very safe and happy holiday season. All the children and families suffering this year are in my heart and I wish everyone the very best for 2016… make it YOUR year.

WRITE! WRITE! WRITE!

One thing I learned from publishing my first book – DON’T RUSH IT! It’s easier said than done especially when you’re the sole bread winner AND broke! However cautious you are, you can still get caught out and I did, big time! It was a fabulous lesson and it taught me to be bold and brave yet cautious and careful.

I have so many projects on the go at the moment but I love being busy and creative.

Streetwise

Logline

In a dark world of unimaginable tragedy and paid, angels and heroes emerge as shining beacons of hope. All is not lost.

Description
Life’s path can change at the blink of an eye or detonation of a bomb. In Leeds, Rob Kennedy should have been planning a wedding not a funeral. Consumed with guilt and grief, suicide seems his only option to end the perpetual nightmare. A single act of kindness saves him from himself. In Birmingham, Georgina Harding escapes the paedophile ring she had become imprisoned in by her mother’s boyfriend. At sixteen, living on the streets is a safer option. Coleen Green is hiding a dark, violent past living with a new identity until her worst nightmare re-appears. Three lives worth saving yet their paths are about to cross with potentially lethal consequences.

I wrote the first draft of this in four weeks and two days – I know this as I was two days over the deadline I gave myself! This is the first script I have written so I have had to learn the trade whilst writing. It has been really hard work but I have thoroughly enjoyed doing it and I am really proud of the outcome. I’ve had very constructive feedback from industry experts and now I feel I am almost ready to let the big wide world see it. Only almost though.
I don’t know how other writers feel but I dread writing the synopsis especially as it is for agents and publishers. It is the only time I struggle to get words down on paper. I know it is psychological and that makes it worse! I have taken my time with this synopsis, in fact I am still working on it. In all honesty I have spent more time on the damn summary than on writing the piece of work. I defy anyone to say writing a summary of the work is easy when you have invested so much in the detail of the work.

There’s quite a few plots intertwining. It is essentially a story of homelessness and how changes in fortune can shape your life for better or worse. The marketing starts in earnest once I have completed the synopsis. IT WILL NOT BEAT ME!

The Nanny

Logline

Be careful what lies hidden in the past of the people you trust.

Description

Sometimes the past cannot be laid to rest without direct intervention. John and Martha O’Grady were victims of the conflict in Ireland. They may have survived but witnessing the death of their parents and grandparents at the hands of the IRA had left indelible horror on their young minds. Orphaned, they were split up. Martha was sent to a convent and John adopted and moved to Manchester. Thirty years on they are about to be reunited only to find the horrors of their past re-appear.

After struggling with the synopsis for Streetwise, I thought I do this differently so I wrote the synopsis first! BIG MISTAKE. I do plan the storylines but I like to have the freedom to develop and change. Writing the synopsis first meant the structure was too rigid – so, I changed the synopsis!!

I woke up this morning and had a brain wave!!! YES, me – fancy that! If I change this story around a little, the suspense at the beginning will be even greater. So that is my next job. I suppose my favourite part of writing, other than making up new characters, is the flexibility and creativity it allows me.  I am a flexible person trying to cultivate a new career. I’m not perfect and I make lots of mistakes but I won’t ever give up.

So, over the last few months I have learned to trust my instinct, keep an open mind, remain flexible and never be too afraid to admit you’re wrong and start again. WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! As in any new career, unless you are super human, you will not be perfect at your first attempt. TRY! TRY! And TRY! Again!

Beyond the Past

Converting this to a script is fascinating as now I can see why adaptations from books to screen are different. Books have so much more written detail. Doing this project is giving me a greater appreciation and understanding of the whole creative industry. Why oh why did I take this long to follow my dreams??

Beyond the Lies

I know there are lots of you waiting for the sequel and it is written but after working on these other projects and improving my knowledge in the industry, I see many changes to the first manuscript, more than I would have made twelve months ago. I promise you the wait will be worth it. This is my Christmas holiday project when I don’t have to break off for the school run and sports events. I can get up at 5am and work through until the boys appear from their pits at around lunchtime – I kid you not! We have a very laid back approach to the Christmas holidays  - we as in the boys! I still work. Our Christmas is probably not like ‘traditional’ Christmas – no over indulgence and no structure. It is a time when the boys recharge their batteries and CHILL.

2016 promises to be a busy year and that is just how I like it. I keep breaking off these projects when a new idea springs in my mind BUT once they are written down, they are left. Now I have about twenty potential ideas and only one pair of hands. Maybe 2016 will see a lucrative deal that will enable me to hire a marketing assistant. We shall see but you can rest assured I won’t be taking anyone on until I can pay them a decent living wage!

Right, you’re up to date with what I am up to. I’d be interested to hear any other writers’ opinions of the dreaded ‘S’ word – synopsis I mean. Actually, feel free to send me any comments – clean of course!!

Enjoy the rest of this week and the weekend. It’s nearly Christmas!!! AGAIN!

At the end of a Storm...

Well I threatened you with a new blog...a bit late but better than never, right?Biting your tongue for over four decades to protect others does NOT give you peace of mind. Noble as it may sound, the only way to achieve peace is to hit the problem head on – in a non-violent way of course! I am proud of myself for sticking up for my beliefs and principles and putting my children’s welfare above everything else.
After speaking to my lovely Dad, I realise no matter what I do, when people don’t like you they will just make things up, assume the worst and twist things to discredit you. If people choose to believe their rubbish without asking you or worse, without even knowing you, then that is a major flaw in their personality, not yours. So bitch and moan as much as you like!  You’re not taking my happiness away, just your own. Let’s face it, if they’re not bitching about you, they're picking on some other poor soul. It’s a sad fact of life.

Nature has a way of teaching us all how to trust our own instincts. I've doubted mine in the past on everything BUT motherhood. NO MORE DOUBTS. I’m just a Mum with a clear conscience, trying to feed my boys!
Now...onto more interesting matters.
What has Jeremy Corbyn done for us?
Contrary to what the media and the powers of this country – the nasty Tory Government and the Elite – Jeremy has revitalised a wilting opposition. Let’s face it, before his election the Labour NEC had rolled over and submitted. I actually think the Labour leadership fell into the trap of believing the papers!! Before Jeremy they were their own worst enemy and some sadly, still are. The press and Cameron will lead people to believe he and John McDonnell are ‘terrorist sympathisers’- as I am apparently! The truth is in times of conflict, one party has to be the bigger person and reach out a hand to start talking. Time and time again we have been lead into wars – questionable whether any have been legal or justified – when what is needed is a calm, level head to look at other options. CONFLICT should be the very last resort yet we seem to use it as the only solution available.
Without the seismic shift in the Labour Party - let’s face it, us lefties never thought we would have the leadership we have now – this Government would have rode rough shot over the very people they ‘claim’ to represent. The tide is turning and people who want change have to be patient. It will not happen overnight but look how far we have come since the 12thSeptember. All the lies that have been uncovered, the major shift in trade union backing, the debate about war, tax evasion, tax credits, the lies about the economy. ALL since the 12th September. All Labour members need to stick together, don’t get sucked into the media rhetoric. Remember, even Jeremy’s opponents can be misquoted to cause mischief. Look how far we have come! Then visualise how far we can go TOGETHER.
I am very proud to be a socialist – equality, fairness and justice for ALL.
Social Media
For all its pitfalls, social media definitely has its advantages. The hashtags #notinmyname #yournotmuslimbruv remind me of how wonderful human beings are and how together it is possible to change the world. However, there are people who do not have the intelligence and decency who will use social media to bully and belittle other people. It is NOT acceptable. Any account, ANY, can be traced back to a user. It is a time now when people should be uniting against all that is evil in this world.
The world would be a much better place if people didn’t just talk but LISTENED!
Goals for 2016
It’s that time of year again when I look at my goals for the new year and this week I’ve started working on them. I am definitely going to start my PhD. Nothing, like a little matter of finance, is going to get in my way. 2016 is a huge year. My first baby turns eighteen and will go to University. He is loving life at the moment which is great to see.
My baby baby turns ten! TEN! Where did that time go? He too is settled, happy and excelling at school. I am happy that they are both happy! That means I am doing something right because let’s face it, the world is depressing at the moment!
My goals are ambitious but achievable. Make the most of your life, you’re only here once – or are you????

Streetwise I am currently polishing Streetwise, my first script.

My HeroLucas recently chose his brother as his hero for Children in Need. My hero was John Lennon. 35 years ago today I remember the day like it was yesterday. I can feel the cold air on my face as I walked to school in tears. The world would have been a much better place with him here with us. A true working class hero for me.

Well, I have a full day of writing ahead of me and a trip to Sheffield for rugby training. I have so many projects on the go but believe it or not, I am organised for once and clear where I want to go in the future. Have a fabulous week.

Terrible week but still here...just

There will be a blog sometime this weekend - sorry to threaten you but forewarned is forearmed and all that!! I know you love me really as I do you!

I can't tell you how glad I am this week is nearly over. I have learnt trying to maintain a dignified silence only feeds lies and manipulations. Sad that this is now the way of the world and people have to be so assuming and judgemental. I refuse to change my outlook but I will no longer stay silent. This weekend I'm back to writing & my number one priority - being the best Mum I can be.

Streetwise
I am currently polishing Streetwise, my first script.

Log line :
In a dark world of unimaginable tragedy and heartbreak, angels and heroes emerge, shining beacons of hope.

Description: Life's path can change at a blink of an eye or the detonation of a bomb. In Leeds, Robert Kennedy should have been planning a wedding not a funeral. Consumed with grief and guilt, suicide seemed his only escape from his perpetual nightmare. A single of act of kindness saves him from himself.

In Birmingham, Georgina Harding manages to escape her mother's boyfriend's imprisonment and a deadly paedophile ring.

Coleen Green is a hiding a dark, violent past and living a new life with a new identity.

Three lives worth saving and whose paths are about to cross with potentially lethal consequences.

Beyond the Past
