MY REVIEWThis story grew on me. After an iffy beginning—this reader didn’t connect with the characters—I found myself caring more and more about Hazel and her cohorts.
I love the idea of The Blue Orchid Society. The bond the members share, the support they offer one another. The token of their society. I felt Hazel’s dismay at leaving her friends behind. And then her horror of [SPOILER.] Her strength in the midst of disaster and chaos. Her bravery.
I understood her “fits of panic,” having witnessed it in those close to me; it is truly dark and horrible and crippling.
Dr. Jackson had his own past, one that drove him, and made him question and shun Helen’s assistance, even as she proved her knowledge and skill.
But war has a way of checking one’s attitude, with the constant threat and uncertainty.
Ms. Moore educated this reader on the Third Carlist War, with her characters plunged right into the midst of it. She deftly knit facts of the war into her story with more than one unexpected twist.
The best twist came at the end, of course, leaving the reader with a pleasant surprise.
