Outside the Law 3 - in Big W now!

Outside the Law 3 seems to have overcome its distribution constipation and is at least in Big W - it should also be in other bookstores too. But Big W has it at a special price at the moment, so if you want to read some excellent Australian True Crime, or be a completist about collection stuff wot I wrote, dash along and pick it up! They had some copies of Outside the Law 2 when I was there yesterday, too, so you can stock up on your Aussie true crime!

ANd now I will take my nasty head cold away

Female apprecation month - I have been paying attention

I absolutely have, and reading some of the posts by [info:] girliejones  and others. I don't have time for a detailed post, but I would just like to take a moment to list a few of my favourite XX artisans.

WRITERS
Lois McMaster Bujold, Diana Wynne Jones, Liz Williams, Mary Borsellino, Naomi Novik, Elizabeth Kostova and Jane Austen are just a few of the lady novellists who have brought me deeper understanding, sweeps of imagination and pure joy.

MUSIC
Thanks to all those who introduced me to Amanda Palmer. J

The Wolf House. Buy it now so you can tell your friends you were into it before it got popular.

So. Most of the folks on my flist already know about The Wolf House series by Mary Borsellino and have zipped over to buy their copy.

For those of you not yet in the know:

The Wolf House - Book 1: Origins and Overtures has just been released as an e-book.

It is amazing.

Mary Borsellino is one of the up-and-coming writers of this generation, regardless of genre. As it happens, she writes some of the very best vampire fiction in the vast sea of vamplit that is out there.

Her world-building is impecca

Podcast frenzy

Last year I spoke at a symposium at Monash Uni called 'Vampires, Vamps and Va Va Voom' - and now all the speeches and presentations from the event are available as podcasts!

Download them here! and listen to a group of very smart people talk about vampire fiction, paranormal romance, slash fiction and the panel discussion on The Opposite of Life!

Look on this picture, and on this

This was one of Petra's favourite perches when she was a wee kitty.

She recently started doing it again. I don't think she realises she's grown.

The Outland Institute Pods Again!

The podcast for the second episode of The Outland Institute is now up! And it turns out John used our talk about my essay in Outside the Law 3 this time around - so stay tuned *next* Friday for the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies piece!

In other news.... today the copy of 'The Adventures of Food Boy' i ordered from EzyDVD arrived. Blame Jess. KNowing how I adore Lucas Grabeel in the High School Musical films (he plays the exquisitely camp Ryan) she told me she'd heard of it and we looked it up. T

The Outland Institute casts its pod

The podcast for the inaugural Outland Institute broadcast, complete with [info:] sharpest_rose  discussing boy and girl wonders, is now online at: http://www.cpod.org.au/page.php\?id=155  Today's show is half way through, so we've probably missed me talking about The CSI Effect, my essay in Outside the Law 3 - but next week I'll be talking zombies. :-)

Ex Mister President Carter being wise

In the aftermath of the 'where did all the women go?' JJJ Hottest 100, and the consistently interesting posts on feminism and the absence of women in a bunch of places where they're not actually *absent* (frequently but not exclusively by [info:] girliejones ), I read this opinion piece by Jimmy Carter. Good on him. Now if we can also get people to stop using the Bible as justification for homophobia as well we'll be getting somewhere.

First line meme

[info:] karenhealey  alerted me to a first line meme for finished works and works in progress. It's an interesting idea - first lines are a bitch. For what it's worth, here is my list for published works:

Fly By Night: Frank stared at the wooden coffin as it was slowly lowered into the ground.

Witch Honour: The last leaves had just fallen from the marbletrees when the Witches returned to Tunston.

Witch Faith: Leenan Ni Breshtan flapped her leathery wings once, then stretched them taut in order to glide on
