Coming Next Week: The Cheapskate Film Festival

That's right - for a third year (if memory serves), I'll be posting a week-long series of blogs focusing on films and documentaries acquired through dollar stores, the local library, and in one case - a very nice discount coupon.
Think of it as a way to learn about some hidden gems, and more importantly...for me to drive traffic on the blog.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Muhammad Ali: He Really *Was* The Greatest

It's really hard to describe how prevalent Muhammad Ali was in the prevailing culture of my youth: he was a well-known boxer, star of his own Saturday morning cartoon, and a person bordering on omnipresent.
What I didn't learn until much later was that he was remarkable in another way.
During the Vietnam War, Muhammad Ali - having changed his name from "Cassius Clay" after converting to Islam - publicly declared that he would not serve in Vietnam.
My memory is hazy on the details (learning about...

This Past Month in Online Shenanigans

One of the disadvantages to running my own freelance marketing consultancy is that I often have less time for blogging/writing/etc. Thankfully, I've been able to complete some long-standing personal projects, meaning more leisure and writing time. But as always, here's my monthly summary of various online appearances.
First, I have been busy blogging for Chicago Now's One Cause At A Time, resulting in a recent appearance at the Chicago State of Innovation Conference. Here are some perspec...

Memorial Day

Although yes, rather over the top....many have seen war's true face, and made the ultimate sacrifice.
Let's pause and reflect on that today.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Review: DC REBIRTH # 1

You've probably already read many of the spoiler-y articles that came out before last week's release of DC Rebirth # 1. Long time readers of this blog know that I've been....well, more than a little critical of DC's approach, especially since the New 52. So this review may be a bit shocking.
I liked DC Rebirth # 1.
One of the things that I enjoyed about the book was that it never felt like another reboot or retcon....the story really focuses on what has been missing from DC Comics for...

Review: THE ADVENTURES OF ALIBI JONES # 2

You know, I always enjoy when friends send me copies of their work to review. It serves as a bit of a palate cleanser (because I'm usually reading tons of other things for professional reasons) and break (because being a freelancer isn't easy). So when pal Mike Luoma of Glow In the Dark Radio sent me a copy of The Adventures of Alibi Jones # 2, I was pleased.
Even more pleas...

Twelve Years of Blogging

My community organizing and mobilizing work had come to a pause (between tobacco retailer education and an upcoming youth conference), and I was bored. Working through my e-mail, I had just come across news about Blogger being open, and so I started an initial blog for about two weeks....
....and then changed the name. Because "gordond.blogspot.com" doesn't quite have the right ring to it.
Pulling from a past classmate's snarky remar...

RIP Darwyn Cooke

Earlier today, news of Darwyn Cooke's passing was announced, coming only a day after his treatment for "aggressive" cancer was disclosed.
Although like many, I loved his work on The New Frontier graphic novel for DC (and his Before Watchmen: Minutemen mini-series was the only highlight of that effort), my personal tastes lean more towards his adaptations of Richard Stark's Parker novels.
And I love his art. I'm not sure I can say anymore than....he'll be missed.
