Cheapskate Film Festival: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO
Remember yesterday, when I said that King Solomon's Mines as a "sneak preview" of today's post?
Sure you do, and you watched the film and wondered....how did that get made?
Today's entry is a movie you may have heard of elsewhere - a great documentary called Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films [image error] . It's probably one of the most fascinating documentaries I've seen (right up there with The Damned: Don't You Wish That We Were Dead and Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me ).
In all h...

Cheapskate Film Festival - REEL INJUN
Right now, the topic that's driving a lot of conversation - and controversy - is that of representation and diversity in popular culture. Everything from female Ghostbusters to the casting of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Doc Savage encourages people to share their opinions.
(Mine? I thought Ghostbusters 2 was an unnecessary sequel, and the film was a great done-in-one....but female Ghostbusters work. I think Johnson is a great choice for Doc Savage. And people who complain about havi...

Cheapskate Film Festival - ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW
You know how so far, I've encouraged you to watch two of the films this week.
I can't say the same about Escape from Tomorrow - it's just bad
You know the story - shot at Disneyland with cameras, the crew posing as tourists....it's supposed to be a surreal, almost Twilight Zone-esque piece. Unfortunately, it's flat, pretentious, and boring.
Normally, I would link to the DVD/streaming video of the film via Amazon, but I won't do that. That would be wrong.
There's no getting around it - this i...

Cheapskate Film Festival: DAMNED - DON'T YOU WISH THAT WE WERE DEAD
Let me take you back to the glory days that were the early 1990s: Bill Clinton was in the White House, I was enjoying a post-college preview of the "real world", and I was getting involved in music. More specifically, the kind of "alternative" rock promulgated by the fanzine called The Big Takeover.
(Yes, I'm still a subscriber, why do you ask?)
One of the bands I "discovered" was The Damned, who were part of the holy triumvirate of 1977 punk along with the Sex Pistols and the Clash. If the Pis...

Cheapskate Film Festival Welcome: MR PEABODY & SHERMAN
Greetings! Welcome to this blog's third annual Cheapskate Film Festival - a series of blog reviews of movies acquired via the Chicago Public Library or discount stores. (This year's docket includes one film acquired via a discounted Google Play rental, and another purchased at Dollar Tree). Each review will provide a link for online viewing (via this blog's Amazon affiliate program), as well as (when possible) a DVD for purchase.
It's ironic that I'm starting on Father's Day, because Mr. Peabo...

Some Pre-Father's Day Thoughts

Busy enough that I wish it were more busy, because....
...well, Father's Day has been tough over the past several years - since Dad died. Part of it is that June is also his birth month, meaning that I get a double whammy of grief and sadness.
It's also tough because, for the last few years of his life, my father and I never talked. In fact, I was persona non grata for reasons known only to him.
And within the space of a few weeks ten...
