The Detective in Winter: MR HOLMES

Let's make one thing perfectly clear: if you're expecting the kind of whiz-bang Sherlock Holmes that you get from the BBC's Sherlock or the Guy Ritchie/Robert Downey Jr films (which should be called Dr. Watson & His Crazy Detective Pal) you'll be very disappointed. Mr. Holmes is a thoughtful film about aging, mortality, and connection that deserves to be placed in that distinct Sherlockian genre that includes The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, and...

It's Chicago TARDIS Auction Time Again!

(Also posted on Facebook)

Yes, folks, it's *that* time again - time when I put on my Auction Coodinator hat for Chicago TARDIS, and gear up for getting some cool items for the auction.

Thankfully, all of the paperwork was done during the cold, cold winter, so now comes the actual work - soliciting items for auction, proceeds to benefit Northern Illinois Food Bank in their efforts to fight hunger in the Western Suburbs.

What are we interested in? Well, here's a brief list of items we would c...

Review: LOST SOUL - The Documentary

Nobody sets out to make a bad movie - nobody wakes up and says "I'm going to make a movie that will have one of the worst reputations ever." Most bad movies result when ambition outstrips talent, or when different perspectives about the finished product prove too great to overcome.

Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau , now available as a digital download and streaming by a variety of services (including Amazon), suggests that possibly both factors were in pla...

Ask THIS, Pal: Ask Gordon Anything. Seriously.

You know, maintaining a blog can be work....and I just realized that for many new-ish readers, they may be wondering just who the heck I am.

Plus, I have so much going on....I'm sure there's a great deal of curiosity. So in an effort to drive some traffic (as well as see just how people are aware of the blog), it's time for you to Ask This, Pal!

Stealing a page from pal Roger, I'm holding an open call for questions. That's right - I'm encouraging you, the reader, to ask me any questio...

Join Me This Weekend for a Sherlockian Sunday!

As many of you know, I'm a frequent contributor to I Hear of Sherlock ...and as board member of Chicago Nerd Social Club , I find myself engaged in many opportunities to sit and discuss many of my favorite things.

So this Sunday, August 9th, I will be part of CNSC's Sherlock 101 panel, where we'll be discussing Holmes in his many incarnations: BBC's Sherlock, CBS' Elementary, the classic Jeremy Brett series...we might even throw in a mention of that silent Holmes movie that was recently dis...

RIP Rowdy Roddy Piper

I loved Rowdy Roddy Piper - I really appreciated his This-Is-Who-I-Am-Deal-With-It attitude. When I heard about his death via heart attack, well....I was stunned.

I really liked his work, even though I was not a fan of wrestling. But here's the best way I can pay tribute.

It's They Live, directed by John Carpenter. It's on YouTube. Watch it before it's pulled. I know I will.

What I'm Doing When I'm Not Blogging

It's Saturday afternoon, and I've been in the midst of writing and editing (and finishing up freelance work).

I've also been dating. On a frequent basis.

But since another month has come and gone, I thought I would do what I usually do - my semi-regular blogaround with a variety of posts, podcasts, and online mentions...all in the name of keeping my online reputation clean.

(As if my personal website, my consulting site, and my Amazon AuthorCentral site weren't enough....)

First, since you may ha...

SOMETHING STRANGE IS GOING ON With Fletcher Hanks....

By all accounts, comic writer/artist Fletcher Hanks was a mystery...and an oddball. His work during the Golden Age of Comics (reprinted in I Shall Destroy All The Civilized Planets! ) has a very distinctive, erratic quality. It's not a hyperbole to claim that once you read it, you will always remember it for its unusual tone...

...and it's that very tone that Flinch Books takes in its anthology of Fletcher Hanks-inspired prose entitled Something Strange is Going On!: New Tales From the Fletcher...

Review: I AM CHRIS FARLEY

So this past Monday night, I was fortunate enough to be invited to a special screening at Second City (it pays to be on their press list, you know) of I Am Chris Farley, a documentary to be featured as part of August 10th's "Chris Farley Day" on Spike TV. So I attended with my date for the evening, and enjoyed a fine, fine piece of work.

(The documentary, that is - I would never, ever refer to a woman as a "piece of work". And apologize for the slight innuendo)

I have to admit - I wasn't a fan...

Your Monday COLUMBO Moment of Zen....

While I'm busy writing to complete some assignments - and in an effort to justify requesting a guest spot on the Just One More Thing podcast - here's a three-part documentary on Columbo via YouTube.

One note: it was placed on YouTube by somebody else. Someone other than the poster may own the copyright. If you're going to watch....watch all three parts now before they're pulled.

Thanks for reading, and trust me - more's coming!
