My New Favorite Christmas Special

...because it's not Christmas without the surf guitar sounds of Dick Dale. Seriously. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

How To Care for Caregivers

Photo courtesy Andy MartelloAs many of you readers may know, I've been helping Mom deal with her health issues. Last week, she received a pacemaker, meaning that she's begun the process towards joining the Borg Collective.

I kid, but I know many of my friends and colleagues often say, "Hey, Gordon, let us know how we can help." So consider this some preliminary guidelines for not just my friends...but also anyone who knows someone taking care of an ailing relative.

Let's be clear - sometimes, b...

DOCTOR WHO - Hell Bent (Review)

This is both the easiest Doctor Who review I've had to write....and one of the hardest.

Context - Mom entered the hospital last Sunday evening. Needed surgery - received it on Friday. So after a very busy - and slightly dramatic - Chicago TARDIS (don't ask), I had to leap into caregiver mode. So after ten days of moving forward....my health is questionable, and I'm seeking deep rest.

But one thankful, pleasant activity was last night's group view of Hell Bent, the series finale, which hit a ve...

THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF JAMES T KIRK - A Review

Although Star Trek was my introduction to fandom and genre television....recently, I've had a reluctant relationship with the franchise. No, it's not that I feel negative sentiment towards either of the JJ Abrams films, but I'm tired of the blatant cries of "it's not the Trek I grew up with"....and the unnecessary hero worship of William Shatner. In fact, I approached The Autobiography of James T. Kirk with some reluctance, expecting professionally written fan fiction.

Ironically, David A. Goo...

Pausing for a Moment

Just a heads up - family health issues have been keeping me busy; hence the post NaBloPoMo drought.

Working on my Chicago Now post to (hopefully) go up tomorrow.

Sunday will bring the last of the Doctor Who reviews.

And besides Mondays with Columbo, have a great idea for a semi-regular post.

Until then, keep the faith.

You Are Leaving NaBloPoMo

Yes, friends, thank you for indulging me in this year's NaBloPoMo.

Admittedly, posts were light in content - couldn't help it. However, this has provided me with a chance to regain some traffic, as well as maintain my dominance over that cybersquatter with my old domain.

Thanks for reading!

Doctor Who: HEAVEN SENT Review

(Written after live view at Chicago TARDIS. Yes, it's barely articulate, but only because I'm still impressed).

Firsr, nothing like watching Who live with fellow fans.

Loved the intro, the puzzle aspect. and the TARDIS-as-metaphor-for-the-Doctor's-Mind.

Didn't like the way a certain sequence was shot (not a deal breaker, but felt off)

Oh, and that ending.

Loved it, can't wait until next week.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Comedian In Twilight: RAISED EYEBROWS

As you're reading this, I'm currently working a large convention of fans....and some would believe that I am "living the dream." But that does a great disservice...and for some, "living the dream" can be a mixed blessing.

Steve Stoliar was one such person - growing up as a Marx Brothers fan, he jumped at the chance to live and work with Groucho Marx in his later years. It forms the backbone of his recently reissued memoir Raised Eyebrows - My Years Inside Groucho's House (Expanded Edition) , an...
