Mondays With Columbo: SWAN SONG

You might think, "Oh, this is the Columbo episode with Johnny Cash, so it's got to be a bit terrible."

Actually, this entry from Columbo's third season is quite remarkable in how it both reveals the crime and the resulting investigation....

...but first, the not-so-good parts.

First, the concert footage at the beginning - there's a quite obvious visual difference between actual Cash concert footage and studio-filmed Cash footage. (Admittedly, it was the 1970s, but the feel as like bouncing...

Farewell to My Feline Brother Chucky

When Mom was in and out of the hospital pre-transplant, he would poke his head out when I would visit, see that I was there, and then head off, leaving me to annoy his brother Smokey.

But today, I took the time to take Mom and Ch...

Kick off African-American History Month with MACKED, HAMMERED, SLAUGHTERED & SHAFTED

Macked, Hammered, Slaughtered, & Shafted - a blaxploitation documentary from David F Walker on Vimeo.

Came across this while reading Derrick Ferguson's movie review blog.

Many of his sentiments and opinions echo my own, so I thought that rather than repeat what he said, post both his review....and the direct link to the film.

Definitely a must-watch. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Happy Birthday Fred Hembeck!

He's not only one of my favorite artists, but he's also responsible for fostering a love of comics in my youth.

And yes, he did corrupt it. Yes, indeedy!

Happy birthday, Mr. Hembeck!

And here's what I'll be reading tonight....

Tonight's Must-Watch: LEGENDS OF TOMORROW

I'll give it to Berlanti Productions - they wear their Doctor Who fandom on their sleeve.

Yes, in other interviews they've given, members of the production team have talked about Who's influence on The Flash. Legends of Tomorrow (which premiered last week, and is run Thursdays at 7 PM CST on the CW) is no exception - it basically can be described as "Doctor Who meets DC Comics' Justice League".

Even on that simplistic note, I would enjoy it, but based on the premiere....this is going...

Today's Comic Marketing Lesson

One of the things many companies don't realize is that, when it comes to advertising, they should know their audience.

Great example, in the 1940s, you would see ads like this in comics everywhere....

Don't believe me - download any of the free CBR files (and here's freeware for reading CBR files) from the Digital Comic Museum.

And that was today's lesson in marketing.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

On Being A Beach Boy: LOVE & MERCY

Although I really liked Love & Mercy - a film about Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys - I have to admit a huge personal bias.

In my college days, I was fascinated with the story of Brian Wilson and his "therapist", Eugene Landy - so much so that it influenced my decision to become a therapist. (Think "someone doing right rather than someone doing wrong"). So my own personal biases may be coming into play, but even so, Love & Mercy is still a powerful film, and possibly the most underrated...

Mondays with Columbo: ETUDE IN BLACK

As the opening episode of Columbo's second season, Etude in Black has several things that make it sparkle - the interplay between Peter Falk and John Cassavetes; the witty, engaging script co-written by Steven Bochco; and some exceptional direction by Nicholas Colasanto (aka, Coach on Cheers).

But not all of the direction is exceptional....and that's the only flaw. But more on that later.

John Cassavetes plays a conductor who is having an affair with his pianist. However, the pianist threa...

Paging Through the Past

I'll be honest....I have a love/hate relationship with writing on a daily basis.

No, not the fiction writing that I'm doing, or even the more professional writing that can lead to income, but keeping a day-to-day dialogue in print. It's held me back from keeping a full-on journal (which is why I tend not to do so), and it also keeps me from making this into a daily blog.

(Secretly, of course, I admire pals like Roger and Mike who are more consistent....but that's besides the point)

But it is rat...
