ICED: A Resort to Murder Mystery

by Avery Daniels

ICED: A Resort to Murder Mystery

Blazing Sword Publishing Ltd. (May 24, 2017)

Paperback: 284 pages

ISBN-13: 978-0999031803

E-Book ASIN: B071LFD6JV

Julienne has her ideal job as an event planner at a prestigious resort. During a luncheon event she coordinated, a renowned celebrity pastor is killed next to the buffet. All eyes turn to her as the suspect. If she wants to stay out of jail or even keep her job, Julienne needs all the help she can get to solve the crime.

She has her work cut out for her with a vengeful high school rival now reporter, the public demanding she be fired, plus family who knows what’s best for her, and a boyfriend who doesn’t understand her. She turns to friends and a new ally to uncover who wanted to put the pastor on ice.

Julienne goes undercover and investigates a local swingers group as she follows the trail of clues before they go cold. Can she gather enough suspects and motives to convince the police to widen their investigation? Can she do it before the killer sets his murderous sights on her? Will her personal life ever be as simple as unveiling a murderer?

My thoughts

Julienne has a run in with the celebrity pastor and when he is found dead detective Lawrence doesn’t want to look any further he thinks she is totally guilty. She decides to get her friends an one sexy neighbor , Mason to help clear her name.

While this is all going on she is fighting her dad for her independence.  Her family thinks she should be married and having kids. Worse her boy friend thinks she knows what is best.  I loved when Julienne puts her foot down.

A great read and looking forward to more.

Character Interview

Hello, I’m Julienne.  First I want to thank you for having me here today.  You have a great blog.

BBB: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Not much to tell, I’m your typical young professional trying to get my career moving.  I’m in the on-the-job management training position for a luxury resort in Colorado Springs.  I have always wanted to travel the world and I plan on managing resorts around the world – if everything goes to plan.

Of course that murder of Pastor Tom during a luncheon event I coordinated threw a gargantuan wrench in my plans.  Anyway.  I had a steady boyfriend too.  I’ve known Brandon most of my life since he’s the best friend of my cousin Loring.  But Brandon and I were apparently on different pages about the future and the murder brought that all to a boil.  I don’t mean to over-share here, but suffice to say that my life changed significantly the day Pastor Tom was killed.

BBB: Tell us about your job?

I started working at the resort in Guest Relations, which means I checked people in and out of the hotel and handled the front desk.  I worked my way up to managing the front desk, grumpy complaints and all. But, when I applied and got the Manager-in-Training job is when I felt I’d won the lottery. I’ll be learning different aspects of the business, but currently I’m the Events Coordinator.  I coordinate all the needs of an event from tables, linens, centerpieces, catering, audio/video requirements, special requests and so on.  It is busy and demanding…challenging.  Most people don’t know what they really want and I try to somehow determine the details before the day of the event.  No small task in some cases.

BBB: What do you like about the resort?

Oh, I love the Colorado Springs Resort.  It’s a member of Historic Hotels of America of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and just a beautiful place.  It sits at the base of a stunning mountain and the entire complex of buildings and small lake take up about 1 square mile.

It’s like the grand hotels on the Mediterranean coast, with architecture of the Italian Renaissance style with pink stucco. The original hotel building was built in 1918 and continually grew.  It has nearly 800 rooms, some in the original and some in the newer building.  It has everything you could want within its complex.  The decor is European luxury and I feel totally spoiled working in such beauty.  But not only do I work among such lovely surroundings, I meet a wide variety of people from locals to celebrities, heads of state, sports figures (we have a championship golf course), to successful people in business.

BBB: Where you surprised about the pastor?

Yes, absolutely.  I never thought of him as a big deal since he started in his garage.  Everyone in town knows him as just Pastor Tom.  I know he grew his congregation over several years until it had a membership of over ten thousand.  But, I never expected him to be drunk let alone grab my…butt.  Then, during my trying to clear my name I found out about his weakness for teen girls.  Thanks to a neighbor I was tipped off about his swinger activities.  That was a shock all right.

BBB: How did the swingers club go for the investigation?

I was very careful about that.  I tried researching online, eventually I got a contact to somebody from a local swingers group that would talk to me.  But the guy kept thinking I was shopping for a group for my husband and I to join.  I have to tell you, I was plenty embarrassed before the swingers investigation was all over.

Vangie Vale and the Murdered Macaron by R. L. Syme, blog tour, giveaway & review

Vangie Vale and the Murdered Macaron

by R. L. Syme

This book is not yet up on Amazon or GoodReads

Release Date is set for August 1.

Approx – 380 pages

Small towns and gossip go together like flaky crust and sweet pastry cream. Between the police scanners, social media, and the senior center, it’s like a zombie apocalypse where the undead consume people’s secrets instead of living flesh.

But Vangie Vale wants nothing more than to stay under the radar…especially the police radar.

So when her new bakery becomes linked to a murder investigation, nothing will stop the gossip mill from connecting her to the dead body. Can’t have that.

Forced into the role of investigator, this new-in-town bakery owner has to become the very thing she hates–a nosy, small-town gossip–in order to clear her good name, and keep her face off the front page. But when a dating debacle brings her face-to-face with the Sheriff, Vangie can’t ignore the fact that one of her macarons was involved in a murder. She has to find the who-dun-it.

Book One in a cozy culinary mystery series from USA Today Bestselling Author, R.L. Syme.

My thoughts:

A new to me author and a book that will keep you turning the pages as fast as you can to see what happens.

I love the small town feel and what was great, Vangie is a baker, part time pastor and now investigator.  New and fresh in the cozy world that makes you want to read more. What happens when a customer gets some macaroons?  Vangie in trouble.  She tries to stay under the radar of the police but that is about to change.

Blackmail, lies, secrets that is something that will get your interest and hold it.  A fun read for everyone.

Links Book Blurb

In high school, Charlotte Windham was a typical student going through an awkward phase — glasses and all. She harbored a crush on Garrett Stephens, the teen heartthrob everyone can’t help but fall for during that unfortunate ugly duckling phase of one’s teen years. Flash forward fifteen years later, and Charlotte and Garrett have a second chance encounter at a Los Angeles restaurant. However, this time around, Charlotte has leveled the playing field. She’s a bestselling novelist and no longer “Glasses,” the humiliating nickname Garrett called her in high school. In short, she’s a catch now and, thanks to corrective eye surgery, it’s not just her eyes that see better…so does her heart! Garrett hasn’t fared poorly either, transforming from teen heartbreaker to adult lothario. A now successful professional golfer, he’s recently suffered a major setback in the form of a possible career-ending injury. With the upper hand, can Charlotte forgive Garrett for his past ways, and for his more recent Don Juan lifestyle? Will she even want to? And, can Garrett change his ways for a second chance with Charlotte, who may just be the perfect fit for him?

My thoughts

This is the first book I have read by Lisa Becker and it won’t be the last.  The characters Garrett and Charlotte are some of the best developed characters I have read in a good while.

Charlotte was a a great tutor in high school and now a novelist.  She has followed her crush Garrett, professional Gold career and knows he has had a injury that has taken him out of the game. He has not change a bit still the good looking boy she remembers.

Garrett sees how Charlotte has changed her looks are nothing like what he remembers.  He wants her and the chase is on in his book.  He has to prove to her he has changed and he can be a real friend and not break her heart.  But will it work?

I loved the way Charlotte was sexy, nerdy, caring and strong.  Garrett gets a second change to win Charlotte over.  Really liked these two together.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book

Excerpt

I stand but hesitate when I see Tamika’s disapproving look. Fi notices as well. “It’s okay, T. I got this,” she says, motioning for me to follow her back. When we get to her small office, she closes the door and gestures for me to sit on a red vinyl chair, circa 1972. She stands in front of me, leaning against the desk, and crosses her arms in front of her chest. “Spill!”

“Where should I start?”

“At the beginning.” She walks around to her chair behind the desk and pulls out a yellow legal pad.

For the next half hour, I go over my encounter with Garrett, from the moment we bumped into each other and he didn’t recognize me, to the embarrassment of being called ‘Glasses.’

Fi takes notes furiously on her pad and grins, nods, and cringes at all the appropriate times. When I finish, she puts her pen down and asks, “Do you want the ‘best friend experience’ or the ‘brilliant legal mind experience’?”

I can’t help but laugh. “Are they mutually exclusive?”

“They are,” she says nodding.

“Okay. I want the best friend experience.”

She rushes around from behind the desk, wraps her arms around me soothingly. “I’m so sorry, hon. That sounds just awful. Let’s go get margaritas tomorrow and drown our sorrows in tequila and lime wedges.”

“Thanks, Fi. You’re the best.”

“Anytime,” she says, rubbing my back. She pulls away and walks around to the back of her desk. She sits down and puts the legal pad to the side. I can’t help but notice the writing scrawled across it.

“Just for kicks, what would you have said if I had asked for the ‘brilliant legal mind experience’?”

“You sure you want to know?” Her lips pull into a grim line. Honestly, I’m not sure I do want to know, but curiosity gets the better of me.

“Lay it on me,” I say.

“You need to get laid. Not the kind of bland, missionary style sex you had with Alex. You need hot heat, sweating up the sheets, crazy animal sex.”

I bust out laughing. “That’s your brilliant legal advice. Crazy animal sex?”

“Yes. That’s my brilliant legal advice,” she says with complete seriousness. “Listen, hon, it’s been a year since that insecure jerk Keane dumped you. I have no doubt it’s been even longer since you’ve, well, you know.” She wags her eyebrows up and down. “Before that, you only seriously dated Travis the cheater and Alex who, let’s face it, despite being completely gonzo for you, was a cold fish and a bore. It’s time to stop comparing every man to this fantasy of Garrett Stephens and just do it with him to get it out of your system. He asked you out for Saturday night. Go! Enjoy!”

“I don’t compare every man to Garrett,” I snap at her.

“Don’t you?” she asks, looking down at me sternly.

“I’m offended you even suggested that.” She looks at me, her sharp eyes boring into me, like she can read my every thought and knows I’m full of it. I imagine this is how she bears down on witnesses on the stand. I don’t like being on the receiving end of that look.

“Even if that’s true,” I start and she nods her head, “and I’m not conceding it is.” I point my finger at her. “Even if he did mean to ask me out, there’s no way it’s a good idea. He’s a total player. It would only be one night of fun and I don’t think I could get over that kind of hurt.”

“Then you need to get over it now. Sorry for the tough love, hon, but you need to move past the fantasy of this man and find someone passionate and amazing who is deserving to love you for all of the great things you have to offer including your messed-up childhood and your incredible success today.”

Lisa Becker General Q&A

Tell us about your newest release.

A light-hearted, second chance romance, Links explores what happens when nerdy girl Charlotte Windham reconnects with her unrequited schoolgirl crush, star athlete Garrett Stephens, 15 years after high school.

Did you have an unrequited crush in high school?

I’m not too ashamed to admit I had such a fierce crush on a boy, I willingly sat with him in the bathroom at parties while he puked up wine coolers, just so I could spend time with him. Thankfully, that soul-crushing time in my life in over, but I couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if I came upon that secret crush today as a confident, successful woman.

Can you tell us more about the main character(s)?

Charlotte Windham was a typical ugly duckling in high school — glasses and all. Highly intelligent and immensely talented, she’s become a breakout success with her best-selling novel, The Crossing Guard.  In school, she harbored an unrequited crush on Garrett Stephens, the teen heartthrob and star athlete who’s gone on to become a professional golfer suffering a possible career-ending injury. The book explores what happens when these two former classmates have a chance encounter in a Los Angeles restaurant, 15 years after high school. With the upper hand, can Charlotte forgive Garrett for his past ways, and for his more recent Don Juan lifestyle? Will she even want to? And, can Garrett change his ways for a second chance with Charlotte, who may just be the perfect fit for him?

Imagine Links would be turned into a movie, who would you cast for the main characters?

I would love to see someone with the emotional range and depth of Maggie Gyllenhaal to play Charlotte. I think she could make her come across as vulnerable, successful, intelligent and passionate. For Garrett, we would need someone who is classically handsome and oozes charm. Matt Bomer, who pulled that off perfectly on White Collar comes to mind.  If he’s not available, let’s just say, I would love to be at the casting call for that role.

[image error]  [image error]

You have also published other books, can you tell us more about them?

I’m most known for the Click trilogy comprised of Click: An Online Love Story, Double Click and Right Click.  The series follows a young woman’s search for love online in Los Angeles with the entire series unfolding in emails between our heroine, her friends and her hilarious dates. Fraught with BCC’s, FWD’s and inadvertent Reply to All’s, readers will cheer, laugh, cry and cringe following the email exploits of Renee and friends. And ultimately, they will root for Renee to “click” with the right man.

What do you have in the works?

I’ve just wrapped up a contemporary romance called Starfish, which examines the unlikely relationship between a regular girl and a touring guitarist in a band. When it comes to romance, you just can’t pass up the idea of falling in love with a rock star.

About Lisa Becker

Lisa Becker is a romance writer whose previous novels include Click: An Online Love Story, Double Click and Right Click. The books, about a young woman’s search for love online in Los Angeles, have been called, “a fast read that will keep you entertained,” “a fun, quick read for fans of Sex and the City,” and “hard to put down.” The first in the series was optioned for a major motion picture.

Lisa’s writings about online dating have been featured in Cupid’s Pulse, GalTime.com, Single Edition, The Perfect Soulmate, Chick Lit Central and numerous other book blogs and websites.

As Lisa’s grandmother used to say, “For every chair, there’s a rush.” Lisa is now happily married to a man she met online and lives in Manhattan Beach with him and their two daughters. So, if it happened for her, there’s hope for anyone!

As Martha inches towards the culprit, she learns that wrapping the case up—and living to baste another square—will be trickier than she ever imagined . . .

My thoughts

I really like this series and have read them all so far.

Martha Rose and her friends are at it again. When they find out Dollen has passed away Jazz is the one they are looking at. Looking into Dolly’s husband they discover deceit and criminal activity in addition to the Ponzi Scheme Dolly’s husband is serving time in prison for orchestrating. Can they find out what is going on?

What about Crusher and Arlo?  Will she stay with Crusher?  A cute read.

The author really knows how to write a story that will keep the reader glued to the book.  You will not want to put this story down until the end and what an ending it is.

Calamity at the Continental Club (Washington Whodunit)

Cozy Mystery

3rd in Series

Camel Press (July 1, 2017)

Paperback: 272 pages

ISBN-13: 978-1603813358

The Mayflower Society is about to hold its annual meeting at Washington D.C.’s swanky gathering place for the elite, the Continental Club. That means Kit Marshall’s upper-crust future in-laws, Buffy and Winston Hollingsworth, are coming for a visit. Annoyed that Kit has not set a date to marry Doug, Buffy wants her to commit to a high society wedding at the club. Kit, though chief of staff for a congresswoman, feels uncomfortable with Buffy and Winston’s crowd.

Kit receives an unexpected reprieve in the form of murder. En route to her morning jog, she encounters the corpse of the leader of the Mayflower Society, conservative multimedia tycoon Grayson Bancroft. On the security cameras, no one was seen entering or leaving the club, which means the culprit had to be an overnight guest. Little love was lost on Bancroft, but the police have their prime suspect: Doug’s father.

Buffy and Winston, formerly disdainful of Kit’s sleuthing, urge her to investigate. With her future in-laws’ freedom and reputations at stake, Kit sets out once again to solve a murder mystery, this time aided by her fiancé Doug in addition to her friends Meg and Trevor and her dog Clarence. Her search for clues will take her from the club to the Smithsonian Museum, the National Archives, and Mount Vernon.

Book 3 of the Washington Whodunit series, which began with Stabbing in the Senate and continued with Homicide in the House.

The Detecting Duchess

by Kate Parker

The Detecting Duchess (Victorian Bookshop Mystery)

Cozy Mystery

5th in Series

JDP Press (May 18, 2017)

Paperback: 312 pages

ISBN-13: 978-0996483162

E-Book ASIN: B071J129MG

The only thing standing between Georgia and her fairy-tale wedding is a murder. Or two.

When a young woman pleads for help from Georgia Fenchurch in locating a missing Crown investigator, Georgia resists. Her wedding is only a week away. Before she can say no, she’s knocked to the ground by an assailant attempting to kill the young woman.

Georgia now feels she must help. She soon finds herself up to her wedding veil in stolen treasure and coded letters. With the Duke of Blackford’s help, Georgia follows a trail of missing men and dead bodies. Every victim had one thing in common – a desire to possess a fortune in gold.

In between the society balls and social calls of late Victorian London, Georgia works on her last case before the big day. Will she stop a ruthless killer in time? Or will Georgia find getting to the altar on time is going to be murder?

My thoughts:

The action of this book stays all the way until the eve of Georgia and Blackford’s wedding.  With a missing person and a lot of missing gold and building to several murders.   This series is well written and will keep the reader glued to the books until the very end.

Shimmer: The Beginning by Nancy Badger book review and book spotlights

A fairy and a Scottish dragon juggle passion amid a waterfall’s crystal-clear fairy pool.  Could a little bit of fairy dust be the answer?

Blurb

Nancy Lee Badger brings you a love story called SHIMMER, a prequel to her Clan of Dragon series. A long time ago, off the coast of Scotland’s Isle of Skye, something incredible began. Among lush green forests, flower-filled meadows, and black jagged mountains, stagnant pools of algae and muck rush to the sea. Robina, daughter of the fairy king, threw wish dust to create a cool, clear, sweet-smelling fairy pool. When a huge black winged creature fell from the sky, she feared her very life was in danger. She never thought she would lose her heart.

Duff, a dragon, was dying, and his hopes to find a mate and produce offspring looked bleak. Drinking from a pool at the base of a waterfall, he sensed another otherworldly creature lurking nearby. A dragon, claiming she was no dragon, knocked him off his feet. When she threw the dust, Duff learned about her ability to shift. As they fought human hunters, and a dark fairy, Robina stole his heart. He surprised her by shifting multiple times without her magical help.

My thoughts

Shimmer The Beginning is the wonderful prequel to her Clan of Dragons series.

We meet Duff, a dying dragon who thinks his future has come to an end until he meets Robina. She has melted his heart. Once they both started to shift there was no end in sight to the love they have for one another and the things to come.

I love the way we learn about how the dragons come to be and of course the authors love for the Scottish island.

A wonderful read as always by this author. I love Nancy’s writing she knows how to get the readers interest right from page 1 of any of her books. I have read a lot of Nancy’s books and you will not be disappointed at all.

If you like dragons and shifters with romance you will love this series.

VSP Publishing (May 27, 2017)

Paperback: 178 pages

ISBN-13: 978-0998427706

E-Book ASIN: B0728867J7

Imagine years spent in her company, during which she challenges the biggest heartbreakers… Years of analyzing, tracking and well-deserved revenge. All motivated by a single promise: to change the lives of all those women calling upon her services. A few women would swear that The Seduction Expert changed their lives. She is an iron hand in a velvet glove, a woman of honour, dressed in a designer suit. She is the Wonder Woman of modern times who owns Gucci shoes and Burberry coats. She is the kind of woman of action who brings emotional turmoil. Get her card, it’s much better than spending holidays in St Barth!

About The Author

La Baronne is a consultant, and human relations hold few secrets for her. She knows all the facets, even the smallest, as she has spent time studying the subject. In her opinion, love and human relations are simply a science integrating a complicated mechanism from which stem a number of principles, laws, equations and rules. Like a game of poker where you test different strategies at certain moments. Here you are bluffing, there you are betting, then you are laying the cards on the table and finally, you fold. In short, the factor “luck” does not exist for La Baronne, it has been invented by those that know nothing about it.
