¿Tienes una Red de Seguridad de Dios?

“Vivan en armonía los unos con los otros; compartan penas y alegrías, practiquen el amor fraternal, sean compasivos y humildes”. 1 Pedro 3:8 (NVI)

Como pastor, veo diariamente situaciones que nadie nunca debería tener que pasar solo. Nadie nunca debería tener que esperar solo en el hospital mientras que un ser querido está en una cirugía de vida o muerte. Ninguna mujer debería tener que esperar sola por el informe del laboratorio en un embarazo problemático. Nadie nunca debería tener que esperar solo por noticias de un campo de batalla. Nadie nunca debería tener que estar solo en el borde de una tumba abierta. Nadie nunca debería tener que pasar la primera noche solo cuando su cónyuge acaba de irse.

Las tragedias y los tiempos difíciles de la vida son inevitables; cada uno de nosotros se enfrentará a ellos. Pero no necesitamos pasar solos por estas situaciones. Necesitamos la red de seguridad de Dios para ayudar a sostenernos en estos tiempos difíciles.

¿Cuál es la red de seguridad de Dios? Es un grupo de otros creyentes —Son un conjunto de personas que realmente están comprometidos contigo. Llamamos a este tipo de grupo una comunidad. Aquí está el plan de Dios para la comunidad: “Si uno de los miembros sufre, los demás comparten su sufrimiento” 1 Corintios 12:26 a (NVI). La comunidad es la respuesta de Dios a la desesperación.

Romanos 12:15 expresa una idea similar: “Gocémonos con los que se gozan y lloremos con los que lloran” (RVC).

La primera parte de este versículo es fácil. Cuando sucede algo bueno para alguien, es a menudo fácil unirse a la fiesta.

Pero cuando alguien está teniendo un momento difícil, puede parecer más complicado. Pero, en realidad, es muy sencillo. Cuando estás pasando por una crisis, no quieres consejos; lo que deseas es que alguien esté ahí para sentarse contigo, sostener tu mano, darte un abrazo, llorar contigo.

Como Pablo nos dice: “Por eso, anímense y edifíquense unos a otros” 1 Tesalonicenses 5:11 a (NVI). Alentar o animar a alguien, no significa tener que dar una charla o palabras de sabiduría. A veces, la mejor manera de animar a alguien es sólo sentarse en silencio, esperar y llorar con un amigo.

¿Tienes una red de seguridad de Dios? ¿Tienes un grupo de compañeros cristianos con los que sabes que puedes contar en tiempos difíciles de la vida? Si no, sal hoy y empieza a construir esas amistades. Los tiempos difíciles en la vida son inevitables, y sólo un necio pasaría por ellos sin estar preparado.

Let God Tell You What to Give

“Honor the Lord by giving him the first part of all your income, and he will fill your barns with wheat and barley and overflow your wine vats with the finest wines.”

Proverbs 3:9 (TLB)

When you become a person of faith, you learn to give according to what God tells you to give. You don’t limit what you give by deciding, “This is what I think I can reasonably give.” That kind of giving doesn’t require any faith.

Instead, ask God, “What do you want to give through me?” There’s a difference between giving by sight and giving by faith.

My wife, Kay, and I have been tested several times in this way on giving. One of the most dramatic examples was when we raised money to build Saddleback Church’s first worship center in 1993. We asked people to make a commitment to give over a three-year period. So Kay and I prayed about what we would give, and we came up with an amount that didn’t seem reasonable, based on our income. From our perspective, it was more than we could afford. But we trusted God for that amount.

A few days later I was reading in 1 Chronicles 29 about how God told King David to announce his gift to build the temple so everybody knew that he was sacrificing as much as everyone else.

I sensed God was telling me to announce our gift so it would be a challenge to others. I was worried people would misunderstand my motive. But I did it anyway, and I asked our church to pray for us.

A month later, we were going into the weekend where we would take up the special offering, and we were still wondering how this would all work out. Then, the Friday before that weekend, I got a call from Zondervan Publishing Company saying they wanted me to write a book and call it The Purpose Driven Church, and they would give me an advance that was more money than Kay and I had committed to giving.

You cannot out-give God!

Telling our church this news was one of the greatest experiences of my life. And I nearly missed it because of my own stubbornness. We would have missed seeing how God is dependable if we hadn’t done what God told us to do. It was a lesson I will never forget.

Trabajando Juntos, Podemos Lograr Mucho Más

“Somos creación de Dios, creados en Cristo Jesús para hacer las buenas obras que Dios de antemano ya había planeado”. Efesios 2:10 (NBV)

Dios nos puso en la tierra para hacer un trabajo determinado que sólo nosotros podemos hacer. Efesios dice que Dios nos creó para buenas obras, y que tenía previsto de antemano lo que íbamos a estar haciendo en la vida. Sin embargo, Él no lo planeó para que lo hiciéramos solos. Necesitamos personas para trabajar juntos.

Tú sabes la sensación que se siente cuando se hace demasiado trabajo por nuestra propia cuenta. Terminamos agotados. ¿Por qué? Debido a que tú estás tratando de hacerlo solo, mientras que Dios nunca tuvo la intención de que fuera así.

En Eclesiastés 4:9 Dios nos dice que “Más valen dos que uno, pues trabajando unidos les va mejor a ambos” (PDT). Cuando se trabaja en equipo, producimos más. Además, ¡teniendo buenos compañeros de equipo junto a ti es mucho más divertido y menos agotador!

Imagínate lo siguiente: Cada uno de nosotros somos como un copo de nieve. Por nuestra cuenta, no podemos hacer una gran diferencia. Sin embargo, cuando un copo de nieve frágil se junta a otros copos de nieve, pueden detener el tráfico. Al igual que los copos de nieve, podemos hacer una gran diferencia si trabajamos juntos, cada uno de nosotros hacemos una pequeña parte.

¿Sabías que cuando trabajamos juntos aquí en la Tierra, en realidad estamos practicando para la eternidad? En el Cielo, todos vamos a tener que trabajar, pero cada uno de nosotros solo tendrá una pequeña parte de trabajo, por lo que nunca se sobrecargarán o cansarán. Nadie va a llevar una carga pesada, cada uno de nosotros hará su pequeña parte y todo el trabajo se completará.

Al caminar por la vida, recuerda que no debes hacer todo por tu cuenta. Necesitas que otras personas caminen a tu lado, pero también necesitas que otras personas trabajen a tu lado. Al compartir la carga de tu trabajo con otros cristianos, encontrarás que en realidad logran más para la gloria de Dios.

Your Generosity Grows Your Influence

“They share freely and give generously to those in need. Their good deeds will be remembered forever. They will have influence and honor.”

Psalm 112:9 (NLT)

Generosity expands your influence. The more generous you become, the more influential you will become.

Influence comes not from what you get in life. Influence comes from what you give away in life, and the more you give away, the more influential you’ll be—and the more opportunities you’ll have to use your influence for God’s purposes.

The Bible says in Proverbs 11:24, “The world of the generous gets larger and larger; the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller” (MSG).

The Bible also says, “They share freely and give generously to those in need. Their good deeds will be remembered forever. They will have influence and honor” (Psalm 112:9 NLT).

When Kay and I got married nearly 50 years ago, we were tithing 10 percent. At the end of our first year of marriage, we raised our giving to 11 percent. At the end of our second year, we raised it to 12 percent. At the end of the third year, we raised it to 13 percent. Every year for 40 years, even in tough times, we have raised our giving a little bit.

Why? Because I wanted my heart to grow bigger every year. I wanted to be more like Jesus. I wanted to be godly. I wanted to be holy.

We weren’t doing this to show off. In fact, I didn’t tell anybody about it for more than 25 years. We just quietly did it every year until 20 years ago when we started giving away 91 percent of our income and living on 9 percent.

We do it because we cannot out-give God. And while my giving went up, so did my influence. God has used that influence to make Jesus’ name known in many places in the world. I’ve tried to use every ounce of influence that he’s given me to help more people hear the gospel.

God wants to use you to do great things for him. As you grown in generosity, he will grow your influence so you can use it for good.

Tres Razones por las que Necesitamos Caminar en la Vida con Otras Personas

“De la manera que recibieron a Cristo Jesús como Señor, ahora deben seguir sus pasos”. Colosenses 2:6 (NTV)

La Biblia compara a menudo la vida con un paseo, porque la vida es un viaje; no nos quedamos quietos. A lo largo del Nuevo Testamento, se nos dice que caminemos en sabiduría, amor, luz y obediencia. Se nos dice que caminemos como caminó Jesús. También se nos dice que caminemos junto a otras personas.

Aquí hay tres razones por las que necesitamos caminar con otras personas:

Es más seguro. ¿Alguna vez has caminado solo de noche por un callejón oscuro o por un camino solitario en el campo? Da un poco de miedo. Pero si te acompaña otra persona, te sientes más seguro.

Es un apoyo. La vida no es una carrera de 100 metros, es una maratón. Caminar con otras personas te da la energía para seguir hasta el final.

Es más inteligente. Se aprende más caminando con otros que caminando solo. Si caminas solo en la dirección equivocada, puede que nunca te des cuenta. Pero si tienes un amigo a tu lado, es probable que uno de los dos reconozca que te has desviado del camino y que necesitas encontrar la dirección correcta.

También aprendemos algunas lecciones importantes cuando caminamos junto a otras personas. Aprendemos a llevarnos bien y a cooperar con los demás.

También aprendemos a amar. Génesis 2:18 nos dice: “No es bueno que el hombre esté solo” (NVI). Dios odia la soledad, y la comunidad es la respuesta de Dios a la soledad. Cuando caminamos junto a otras personas, encontramos una comunidad en la que aprendemos a amar.

Caminar junto a otras personas también nos enseña la hospitalidad. La Biblia dice en 1 Pedro 4:9, “Practiquen la hospitalidad entre ustedes sin quejarse”. ¿Cuál es tu queja? ¿Cuál es tu excusa para no abrir tu casa a los amigos?

Tal vez has dicho: “¡Mi casa está sucia!”. Pues bien, ¡límpiala!

O tal vez tu excusa sea: “Mi casa no es suficientemente grande”. ¿Puedes hacer que entren tres personas en ella? Jesús dice: “Porque donde dos o tres se reúnen en mi nombre, allí estoy yo en medio de ellos” Mateo 18:20 (NVI).

Todo el mundo anhela pertenecer, porque Dios nos hizo para relacionarnos. Cuando caminamos junto a otros cristianos en comunidad, satisfacemos ese anhelo.

You Significance Comes From Serving

“Each of you has received a gift to use to serve others. Be good servants of God’s various gifts of grace.”

1 Peter 4:10 (NCV)

Whenever we pursue something in life, we do it hoping that it will give us significance. But the only way to really experience significance is to serve with others in ministry. Ministry just means doing good to other people.

Significance does not come from status or a hood ornament on your car or a logo on your shirt. Significance does not come from a bigger salary. Significance does not come from sex.

Significance comes from service. Significance comes when you start thinking about other people more than you think about yourself and you give your life away. You cannot be selfish and significant at the same time.

The Bible says in 1 Peter 4:10, “Each of you has received a gift to use to serve others” (NCV).

What are your talents? What are the unique skills and abilities God has given you? They were not given for your benefit. God gave them to you for the benefit of the people around you. You are shaped for significance, and you find that significance by using your gifts and talents and abilities to serve other people.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 says, “Two people are better than one, because they get more done by working together. If one falls down, the other can help him up. But it is bad for the person who is alone and falls, because no one is there to help. If two lie down together, they will be warm, but a person alone will not be warm. An enemy might defeat one person, but two people together can defend themselves; a rope that is woven of three strings is hard to break” (NCV).

You may think it’s easier to do things on your own. You may prefer solitude. You may need your alone time. But you will always get more done when you serve with other people.

You’re not meant to serve God by yourself. You’re meant to serve God on a team. You’re meant to serve God in a family, in a small group, in a church. You’re meant to serve God in relationship.

Do you want to find significance and give your best to God? Then serve him with your community.

Talk It Over

Your spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experience make up your SHAPE. Why is it important to understand how God has shaped you?
In what specific ways are you using your gifts and talents to serve others?
How does God’s definition of significance differ from the world’s definition?

Where will you spend eternity?

Your sins separate you from God. And it is only God’s grace that allows you back into a right relationship with him.

The Bible says, “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

If you’re ready to make peace with your Creator, then pray this prayer:

“Dear Jesus, I don’t want my sin to separate me from you any longer. You have promised that if I believe in you, everything I’ve ever done wrong will be forgiven, I will learn the purpose of my life, and you will accept me into your eternal home in heaven one day.

“I confess my sin, and I believe you are my Savior. You have promised that if I confess my sin and trust you, I will be saved. I believe you when you say salvation comes by grace, through faith, and not by anything I do. I receive you into my life as my Lord. Today, I’m turning over every part of my life to your management.

“I want to live the way you created me to live and use the rest of my life to serve you instead of serving myself. I commit my life to you and ask you to save me and accept me into your family. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Jesús Ve, Cuida y Viene en tu Lucha

“No los abandonaré como a huérfanos; vendré a ustedes”. Juan 14:18 (NTV)

A veces te encuentras en situaciones que no quieres y no te gustan. De hecho, algunos días puedes sentir que las tormentas de la vida amenazan con ahogarte. Entonces, ¿cómo evitas ser arrastrado por los vientos devastadores de la vida? En los últimos días, hemos analizado tres antídotos para los días tormentosos: mantente conectado con tu familia espiritual, pon en práctica todo lo que has aprendido y enfoca tu atención en la grandeza de Dios.

Aquí está el cuarto antídoto: recuerda cuánto le importas a Jesús.

Jesús no solo ve tu lucha, sino que también se preocupa por tu lucha. Y no solo le importa, sino que también hace algo al respecto.

En la historia de Jesús caminando sobre el agua de Marcos 6:47-48, puedes ver este patrón de Jesús viendo, cuidando y haciendo: “Al anochecer, la barca se hallaba en medio del lago, y Jesús estaba en tierra solo. En la madrugada, vio que los discípulos hacían grandes esfuerzos para remar, pues tenían el viento en contra. Se acercó a ellos caminando sobre el lago…” (NVI).

Los discípulos tenían cuatro cosas en su contra: estaba oscuro, estaban en medio de un lago, estaban solos y “tenían el viento en contra”.

¿Cómo respondió Jesús? No se limitó a pararse en la costa y decirles qué hacer. En cambio, caminó hacia ellos, en el agua, en su momento de desesperación. Él dijo: “¡Cálmense! Soy yo. No tengan miedo” Marcos 6:50b (NVI). Entonces Jesús subió a la barca y el viento se calmó.

Eso es lo que hace Jesús en tu momento de desesperación. Él se preocupa lo suficiente como para caminar hasta donde estés, donde sea que estés, e intervenir.

Amigos, ese es el Evangelio. Dios vino a la Tierra y se hizo uno de nosotros. Él tomó todos nuestros problemas y murió en la cruz por nuestros pecados. No se limitó a gritar instrucciones desde el Cielo. Se acercó a nosotros y dijo: “Resolveré el problema que ustedes no pueden resolver”.

No sé por lo que estás pasando ahora mismo. Pero te diré esto: puedes sentirte abandonado, pero no lo estás. Dios te ve, te cuida y está contigo, incluso en la hora más oscura de la noche más tormentosa.

Juan 14:18 dice: “No, no los abandonaré como huérfanos; vendré a ustedes” (NTV).

No importa qué problemas estés afrontando, recuerda que a Jesús le importa y déjalo que venga a ti hoy.

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿Hay momentos en los que no quieres que Jesús te vea luchando en la vida y haciendo “grandes esfuerzos para remar”, como dice Marcos 6:48? ¿Alguna vez quieres arreglar tus problemas ti mismo? Explica.Sabiendo que Jesús es el Creador de todo en el universo, incluyendo el agua, ¿te cuesta entender cómo Jesús puede caminar sobre el agua? ¿Por qué o por qué no?Después de leer este devocional, ¿qué consejo le darías a un amigo que se encuentra en medio de una tormenta en este momento?

Si nunca ha invitado a Cristo a tu vida, ¿por qué no hacerlo hoy?

Comienza orando esta sencilla oración: “Querido Dios, sé que soy pecador y te pido perdón. Creo que Jesucristo es tu Hijo. Creo que murió por mi pecado y que lo resucitaste. Quiero confiar en Él como mi Salvador y seguirlo como Señor, a partir de este día. Por favor, pon tu Espíritu Santo en mi vida y ayúdame a hacer tu voluntad. En el nombre de Jesús oro. Amén”.

God Created You to Need Other People

“He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow.”

Ephesians 4:16 (NLT)

There are some things you will never learn on your own. You only learn them in community. To grow and develop your potential, you must learn from other people.

For example, you can only learn forgiveness in relationships. You can’t learn that on your own. You can only learn loyalty in relationships. You can only learn love in relationships. You can’t learn kindness or faithfulness or graciousness or unselfishness without others.

In fact, the most important things you need to learn in life require that you be in relationship to other people. You can’t do it on your own. If you want to build your potential, you must learn from others.

Where is the best place to do that? In God’s family. You learn it by being connected to the body of Christ.

Ephesians 4:16 says, “He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow” (NLT).

This is why I’ve talked so much about small groups over the years—because I’ve seen it work: I’ve seen people join a small group who felt unconnected, who were unsure of their purpose, who needed direction in serving others, who just needed to be known. And being in community with others in God’s family made all the difference. Sharing their lives and being open about their struggles and cheering each other on in life made all the difference.

Why does sharing your life with others make a difference? Because you weren’t made for success. You were made for significance. And the best way to live a life of significance is in relationship with others, serving and sharing and growing and worshiping with them.

You need the people God has placed in your life. And they need you! God wired us to depend on each other and to learn from each other. When you’re connected to other people, it’s not just you who grows and benefits. You also use your gifts and experiences to help others fulfill their purpose.

We need each other!

“¿Por qué tienen miedo? —preguntó Jesús—. ¡Tienen tan poca fe! Entonces se levantó y reprendió al viento y a las olas y, de repente, hubo una gran calma. Los discípulos quedaron asombrados y preguntaron: ¿Quién es este hombre? ¡Hasta el viento y las olas lo obedecen!”. Mateo 8:26-27 (NTV)

Cada vez que te encuentres en una situación sobre la que no tienes absolutamente ningún control, cambia tu enfoque a la grandeza de Dios. Eso se llama adoración, y es el tercer antídoto para resistir los vientos potencialmente devastadores de la vida.

Durante los días tormentosos, cuando tu salud está empeorando, tu cónyuge te es infiel o tus amigos te critican, tienes que tomar una decisión. ¿Te vas a preocupar? ¿O vas a adorar?

Hay un hermoso ejemplo de esto en el Nuevo Testamento. Jesús está en una barca con sus discípulos en el Mar de Galilea. El mar de Galilea era, y sigue siendo, un gran lago, lo que facilita que surjan tormentas repentinamente. Y eso es exactamente lo que sucedió.

Mateo 8:24-25 dice: “De repente, se desató sobre el lago una fuerte tormenta, con olas que entraban en la barca; pero Jesús dormía. Los discípulos fueron a despertarlo: —Señor, ¡sálvanos! ¡Nos vamos a ahogar! —gritaron” (NTV).

El barco daba vueltas y vueltas, pero Jesús seguía durmiendo. Estaba en paz; no estaba preocupado. Pero los discípulos entraron en pánico.

“¿Por qué tienen miedo? —preguntó Jesús—. ¡Tienen tan poca fe! Entonces se levantó y reprendió al viento y a las olas y, de repente, hubo una gran calma. Los discípulos quedaron asombrados y preguntaron: ¿Quién es este hombre? ¡Hasta el viento y las olas lo obedecen!” Mateo 8:26-27 (NTV).

Toda la experiencia dejó a los discípulos asombrados de Jesús. Habían olvidado por un momento quién era Jesús. Pero cuando lo vieron mostrar su poder sobre la naturaleza, desvió su atención de su miedo y se centró en la grandeza de Dios. En otras palabras, la experiencia los hizo adorar.

La adoración es una forma de zarpar para que los vientos de la vida te lleven en la dirección que quieres ir: hacia Jesús. Los vientos tormentosos pueden desviarlo de su rumbo y amenazar con ahogarlo. En lugar de eso, deja que los vientos del dolor, el trauma y el estrés te impulsen a concentrarte en Dios y zarpar hacia Él.

¿A qué le tienes miedo en esta etapa de tu vida? Sea lo que sea, con Jesús en tu barca, tu barca es insumergible. Tiene poder sobre la naturaleza y sobre todo lo demás.

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿De qué manera las tormentas en tu vida te han acercado a Dios? ¿Cuándo te han alejado las tormentas de Dios?Describe un momento en que viste a Dios mostrar su poder sobre la naturaleza. ¿Cómo reaccionaste?¿Cuándo fue la última vez que te asombró Jesús? ¿Cuáles fueron las circunstancias?

¿Seguirás a Jesús hoy?

La Biblia dice: “Porque tanto amó Dios al mundo que dio a su Hijo único, para que todo el que cree en él no se pierda, sino que tenga vida eterna” Juan 3:16 (NVI).

¿Confiarás en que Dios cumplirá su promesa? Haz esta sencilla oración: “Querido Dios, creo que Jesucristo es tu Hijo. Confieso que he pecado y te pido perdón. Creo que Jesús murió para quitar mis pecados y que tú lo resucitaste. Quiero desde este día en adelante confiar en Jesús como mi Salvador y seguirlo como mi Señor. Guía mi vida y ayúdame a hacer tu voluntad. En el nombre de Jesús oro. Amén”.

You Learn Your Purpose Through Relationships

“Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of [Christ’s] body.”

Romans 12:5 (MSG)

We only learn who we are in relationship. We only learn our true identity in community.

You’ll never learn who you really are by yourself. You only learn it in relationships. That means you must connect with other people for fellowship.

If you had been born and lived your entire life to adulthood with no human contact, you wouldn’t have the slightest idea who or what you were. You wouldn’t even know you were a human being. You only know that because you’re in relationship to other human beings. You learn your identity by being in relationships.

The Bible says we need to be connected to God’s family, the body of Christ: “We are like the various parts of a human body. Each part gets its meaning from the body as a whole, not the other way around . . . Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of [Christ’s] body. But as a chopped-off finger or cut-off toe we wouldn’t amount to much, would we?” (Romans 12:4-5 MSG).

My ear only functions and fulfills its purpose by being connected to my body. If my ear was cut off and was lying on the ground, what’s the value of it? Nothing, because it can’t hear anything.

Same goes with my nose and eyes: If they’re not connected to my body, what’s their purpose? They don’t have a purpose, because they can’t smell or see anything by themselves.

In the same way, if you’re not connected to the church, then you’re not going to know the purpose of your life. You’re not going to know your role. You’re not going to know your function. You’re not going to know your value and your meaning.

As a part of God’s family, you have a special role that only you can play. You have a job that won’t get done if you don’t do it. You have contributions to make that other people won’t benefit from if you’re not connected to God’s family.

You’re an important part of the body of Christ! And you’ll only find your value, your purpose, and your identity when you are connected to the church and form relationships that help shape you into who God made you to be.
