Serve Out of Design, Not Duty

“Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves."

Romans 12:3 (NLT)

The Bible says that God wants you to listen to your heart. To know what he wants you to do, he wants you to look at what you’re made to do. But most people these days are moving so fast that they don’t have time to listen to their hearts.

We’ve got to slow down! We’re all in such a hurry, stressed with too much to do, not realizing until later that we didn’t have to do so much.

That describes most people today in America. They’re speeding with no direction. But God wants you to slow down and listen to your heart. Romans 12:3 says, “Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves” (NLT).

I suggest you get alone with God and ask these questions: What do I love to do? What do I dream of doing? What fascinates me? What can I talk about, think about, and study all day and not get bored? Where have I been most effective in my life?

I once baptized an 80-year-old woman after a service at Saddleback Church. She wanted to be a small group host. That’s pretty cool—an 80-year-old small group host! She said, “I just wish I had learned years ago that we serve God out of our design, not out of duty.”

I wish everybody could learn that truth. That’s what SHAPE—your Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, and Experiences—is all about. We serve God out of our design, the way he shaped us. We serve God not out of duty but because we love him.

When you do what God has wired you to do, it brings him glory. That’s the way to live. Don’t serve God out of force or design or guilt. Serve him out of delight and gratitude.

Start by making a careful exploration of who you are and the work you’ve been given. In other words, discover what God put you on earth to do. Then go do it with joy!

Piensa en las formas de como mostrar amor a los demás cada día. ¿Cuál es la motivación detrás de tu amor?¿Cómo amar a los demás ha bendecido tu vida?¿Cuáles son las personas en tu vida que necesitan tu amor y tu apoyo o con las que hoy necesitas celebrar?Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más? Si estás listo para cruzar esa línea y tomar la decisión de creer en Jesucristo y seguirlo; haz esta oración.Más recursos en español y en otros idiomas incluyendo ASL — Lenguaje de Signos Americano RickWarren.org.Síguenos en Instagram & Facebook y comparte Esperanza Diaria con tus amigos y familiares.Recibe durante un mes un versículo de inspiración diario por WhatsAppNota: Desafortunadamente tenemos restricciones para enviar mensajes por WhatsApp a CUBA. .fb-background-color { background: #ffffff !important; } .fb_iframe_widget_fluid_desktop iframe { width: 100% !important; }

Broken Heart? The Lord Is Close

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

We’ve all had our heart broken in some way—maybe by disappointment, fear, shame, rejection, or ridicule.

I would say to you, as your friend, that I’m sorry your heart has been broken. I really am. I care about the hurt that you have gone through because God cares about it. He hurts with you. What was God doing when you were weeping? He was weeping too.

In fact, it is in your pain that God is closest to you, whether you realize it or not.

The Bible says in Psalm 34:18, “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (NIV). How does he do that? He saves us by giving us a heart transplant. It’s his specialty, in fact.

God says, in effect, “For the heart that’s guilty, I’ll give you a heart that’s forgiven. For the heart that’s resentful, I’ll give you a heart that’s full of peace. For the heart that’s anxious, I’ll give you heart that’s confident. For the heart that’s lonely, I’ll give you a heart full of love. The heart that has been bitter and angry? I’ll give you a heart that is forgiving and loving and generous instead. Let me do a heart transplant in you. I will set you free.”

Why do we need freedom? Because we’re all enslaved. We’re slaves to the expectations of other people. We’re slaves to past memories. We’re slaves to future fears. We’re slaves to current pressure. We’re slaves to the opinions of society, and on and on and on.

But all you have to do is open your heart to Jesus Christ and give him 100 percent of your heart. Say, like David in Psalm 119:32, “I run in the path of your commands, for you have broadened my understanding” (NIV).

We must stop limiting God! We can’t even imagine how much he wants to do with our lives. Open your heart to him, and let him transplant your heart for his own.

Talk It Over

How has God saved you when you’ve been crushed in spirit?
When has God given you a heart transplant, exchanging your troubled heart for his?
In what ways have you been limiting God? What has been the effect?

Will you follow Jesus today?

God proved his goodness through his Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible says, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 CSB).

Are you ready to trust God to fulfill his promise of eternal life? If so, start by praying this simple prayer: “Dear God, I believe Jesus Christ is your Son. I confess I have sinned, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus died to take away my sins and that you raised him to life. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow him as Lord from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

If you just prayed to accept Jesus, please email me at Rick@PastorRick.com and let me know about it. I’d like to send you some free materials to help you start your journey with Jesus.

Yo te necesito y tú me necesitas.

Me necesitas a mí, y yo te necesito a ti.

To Get More Passionate, Get Closer to God

“Look, I’m standing at the door and knocking. If anyone listens to my voice and opens the door, I’ll come in and we’ll eat together.”

Revelation 3:20 (GW)

God gave you a heart, and he has placed in you passions, desires, and dreams. But unless they are under his control, they will be misused, they will be abused, they will be misapplied, they will be misdirected, and they will be wasted in your life.

All around the world, there are millions of passionate people with interests and dreams and ambitions that are being misused and abused. And it breaks God’s heart. That’s why, in spite of their talent and their passion, those people are unhappy. When your passions are misused, it makes you miserable.

Some of you might be thinking, “I’m not really passionate about anything right now.” You know what that means, don’t you? It means you are disconnected from God. You cannot be connected to God and dispassionate. When you are plugged in to God, it’s like plugging in to 220 volts. You get passionate!

God is a passionate God; he’s emotional. The only reason you have emotions is because you’re made in his image. God has loved you with an everlasting love. And he gets jealous when he sees you ignoring him for something else. But no matter what you’ve done, he will always love you. That’s passion!

When you spend time with God on a daily basis and you get plugged in to him, you can’t help but be passionate. You start to develop God’s heart for the world. You start to feel the way he does. That’s because you become like whoever you hang out with.

Would you like to have more energy in life? More enthusiasm? More get-up-and-go? Let me tell you where to get it. The word “enthusiasm” comes from the Greek words en and theosen meaning “in” and theos meaning “God.” When you get en theos, you’re going to be enthusiastic.

The closer you get to God, the more energy, vitality, and passion you will have in life. The further away you get from God, the more bored and apathetic you become.

But opening your heart to God is a choice. In Revelation 3:20, Jesus says, “Look, I’m standing at the door and knocking. If anyone listens to my voice and opens the door, I’ll come in and we’ll eat together” (GW).

Jesus Christ has been standing and knocking at the door of your life for a long time. But he’s a gentleman. He’s not going to bust the door down. You’ve got to open it up.

God’s Gift For You

God’s Gift For You

When you put your faith in Jesus, you spiritually step across a line. You stop trusting in yourself and start trusting in Jesus; you stop following your own way and start following God’s way. The moment you step across that line and put your faith in Christ, God gives you four major gifts. Here’s what they are:

1. The gift of forgiveness. Guilt weighs you down and makes you miserable, but “even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:15 NLT). When Jesus forgives, he wipes out everything you’ve ever done wrong. It’s all forgiven and forgotten.

2. The gift of eternal life. You might call this the gift that keeps on giving—because God has long-range plans for you. Romans 6:23 says, “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord” (NLT). You’ll never work, earn, or behave your way into heaven. The only way to heaven is by God’s free gift that you accept by faith.

3. The gift of God’s Spirit. God isn’t just near his followers; his Spirit is inside them. Romans 5:5 says, “He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love” (NLT). How do you know when you’re letting God’s Spirit live through your life? You will be filled with the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

4. The gift of special abilities. The Bible calls these special abilities “spiritual gifts.” They’re the abilities you need in order to fulfill the purpose God has planned for you. First Corinthians 12:7 says, “A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other” (NLT). When you use your spiritual gift, you bless other people; when they use their gifts, they bless you.

Are you a follower of Christ? Then God’s gifts of forgiveness, eternal life, God’s Spirit, and special abilities are yours!

Yo no la he logrado. Tú no la has logrado.

¿Quiénes son las personas en tu vida con las que puedes compartir abierta y honestamente?¿Qué áreas de tu vida necesitas evaluar de modo que puedas fijar metas realistas para cambiarlas?¿Cuáles son algunas maneras en que puedes realizar un seguimiento de tu crecimiento y progreso?Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más? Si estás listo para cruzar esa línea y tomar la decisión de creer en Jesucristo y seguirlo; haz esta oración.Más recursos en español y en otros idiomas incluyendo ASL — Lenguaje de Signos Americano RickWarren.org.Síguenos en Instagram & Facebook y comparte Esperanza Diaria con tus amigos y familiares.Recibe durante un mes un versículo de inspiración diario por WhatsAppNota: Desafortunadamente tenemos restricciones para enviar mensajes por WhatsApp a CUBA. .fb-background-color { background: #ffffff !important; } .fb_iframe_widget_fluid_desktop iframe { width: 100% !important; }

Four Ways to Use Your Spiritual Gifts

“Give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.”

Romans 6:13 (NLT)

God has given spiritual gifts to every single follower of Jesus. How do you start using the spiritual gifts God put inside of you? Here are four ways to get started:

1. Discover your gifts.
You’ve got to know what your gifts are before you can use them. Stop ignoring the fact that inside of you are some dormant gifts that you’re not even using, and figure out what God has put in you. The Bible says in 1 Timothy 4:14, “Do not neglect the spiritual gift that is in you” (GNT).

2. Dedicate your gifts to God.
The Bible says in Romans 6:13, “Give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God” (NLT).

Maybe you already know what you’re good at, but you’re just not using it for the Lord. You’re using it for yourself. You need to humble yourself and dedicate to the Lord every gift you have. Push all of your excuses out of the way and say, “God, I dedicate back to you what you gave to me.”

3. Develop your gifts.
Gifts are like muscles: The more you use them, the bigger they get. You can strengthen and develop and grow what God has given you. Any gift that God gives you can and should be developed. You’ll get better at it by practicing, studying, and by learning from other people who have the same gift.

I’ve learned that when God gives you something, he will give you even more of it if you use it well—more talent, money, influence, relationships, or responsibility. He says, “I can trust that person. I’m going to give that person more and more and more.”

4. Deploy your spiritual gifts.
“Deploy” means to put into service. You get out on the field, and you start doing something. Romans 12:6 says this: “We are to use our different gifts in accordance with the grace that God has given us. If our gift is to speak God’s message, we should do it according to the faith that we have” (GNT).

What’s the best way to discover and dedicate and develop and deploy your spiritual gifts? In a small group. It’s a testing ground! If you are not in a small group, I encourage you to get connected to one this week so that you can test and develop your spiritual gifts in the safe and supportive environment of friends who will encourage you.

Talk It Over

What gifts in your life have you not yet dedicated to God? What would it look like to dedicate those gifts to him?
How do you need to start developing one of your spiritual gifts this week?
When have you deployed one of your spiritual gifts? What spiritual gift do you need to deploy now?

Are you ready to accept God’s free gifts?

First God offers the gifts of forgiveness and salvation. And once you accept those, he gives you spiritual gifts to serve him and other people. If you’re ready to receive all those gifts, pray this prayer today:

“Thank you, God, for forgiving everything I’ve ever done wrong. I have gone my own way, but now I’m putting my trust in your grace. I ask that you forgive me of my sins.

Today I accept your free gift of eternal life in Jesus Christ because of what he did for me. I know I can’t earn my way to heaven. I accept this free gift of your Spirit into my life. Live through me, and fill me with your love and joy and peace and patience.

God, I accept the gift of special, spiritual abilities you put in my life. Help me to discover them, dedicate them, develop them, and deploy them to be the person you created me to be. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

If you just prayed to accept Jesus, please email me at Rick@PastorRick.com
and let me know about it. I’d like to send you some free materials to help you start your journey with Jesus.

¿Cuáles son las “cosas viejas” que tienes que sacar de tu vida, de tu mente y de tu cuerpo?¿Cuáles son las “cosas nuevas” que necesitas para llenar tu mente y tu cuerpo?¿Cuáles son los nuevos hábitos que tendrás que desarrollar a fin de lograrlo?¿De qué manera estás tratando de ser más como Dios en la “justicia y santidad”?Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más? Si estás listo para cruzar esa línea y tomar la decisión de creer en Jesucristo y seguirlo; haz esta oración.Más recursos en español y en otros idiomas incluyendo ASL — Lenguaje de Signos Americano RickWarren.org.Síguenos en Instagram & Facebook y comparte Esperanza Diaria con tus amigos y familiares.Recibe durante un mes un versículo de inspiración diario por WhatsAppNota: Desafortunadamente tenemos restricciones para enviar mensajes por WhatsApp a CUBA. .fb-background-color { background: #ffffff !important; } .fb_iframe_widget_fluid_desktop iframe { width: 100% !important; }

Using Your Gifts Is an Act of Worship

“When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.”

John 15:8 (NLT)

When you use the gifts that God has given you, it is an act of worship.

What makes God smile? Some people think God only smiles when you’re praying or singing or going to church. The truth is, God smiles when you use the gifts that he’s given you. When you’re doing what you were wired and shaped to do, God says, “That’s so cool! I created them to do that!”

There’s a memorable moment in the movie Chariots of Fire when Olympic runner Eric Liddell said, “When I run, I feel [God’s] pleasure.” God shaped some people to run. He shaped others to ride bikes, drive fast cars, or surf. They’re just good at it. I think when God looks at them, he says, “That is so cool! I made the wave. I made the surfer. This is cool.” You don’t have to always be doing something “spiritual” to bring God glory.

The Bible says, “When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father” (John 15:8 NLT). When you use your gifts correctly, God gets the glory. And you certainly can’t please God with gifts you don’t have. God doesn’t expect you to be talented or gifted at everything. He just wants you to use what he’s given you.

In the Bible, the word “joy” and the word “gift” actually come from the same Greek word. It’s the word for “grace.” When you use your spiritual gifts, it brings joy to God, and it brings joy to you. God says, “You’re doing what I created you to do.” And you say, “This feels good!”

There’s no feeling like doing something for God’s glory, knowing that you’re doing what he made you to do. It is the greatest thrill in the world! If you haven’t ever felt that thrill, discover and develop the spiritual gifts that are in you so you can enjoy your life and bring glory to God.
