If You Know It, Then Do It

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

James 1:22 (NIV)

Yesterday, we looked at Mark 12:30: “You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength” (NLT). One way to look at this verse is to focus on loving God with all your talk, all your feelings, all your thinking, and all your acting. God shaped you to be primarily a talker, a feeler, a thinker, or a doer.

Talkers love God with their hearts. Feelers love God with their souls. Did you know that you can also love God with your intellect? Thinkers love God with their minds. When you’re developing and strengthening your mind, it is an act of worship.

Thinkers love Bible study. Psalm 119:97 says, “How I love your law! I think about it all day long” (GNT).

People who are thinkers fall in love with the Bible when they become believers. There is no other book in the world like it! It has the answers to life’s questions, including: Why am I here? Where am I going? What is the purpose of life? Does my life matter? What’s the past? What’s the future? Where did I come from?

We need thinkers because the world needs consideration. Somebody has to be thinking through complex issues and the implications of what the rest of us are doing. We need people who think through tough problems and bring solutions to the table. That’s why we need scientists, writers, philosophers, and innovators.

But thinkers have to be careful to practice humility. The Bible says, “Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom” (Proverbs 3:7 NLT). Why? Because God is God, and you’re not.

Humility is a choice. Not once in the Bible are you ever told to pray for God to humble you. It says to “humble yourself before the Lord.” It’s a choice. Humility is something you do to yourself. Nobody else can do it to you. They can humiliate you, but they can’t make you humble. In essence, humility is total dependence on God. It’s not denying your strengths; it’s being honest about your weaknesses.

Thinkers also need to be careful to practice what they know. If you know it, then do it! James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says” (NIV).

God’s Word is our manual for life; he wants us to use it to learn how to do things his way. He’s our Creator, and he knows the best way we should live. And we can count on this: God is always right there with us, helping us to follow his instructions.

Talk It Over

Is it harder for you to deny your strengths or be honest about your weaknesses? Why?
Make a list of the things you believe in. Are you acting on those things?
How are you developing and strengthening your mind as an act of worship?

Las Oraciones de Gratitud Traen Paz

“No se preocupen por nada; en cambio, oren por todo. Díganle a Dios lo que necesitan y denle gracias por todo lo que él ha hecho. Así experimentarán la paz de Dios, que supera todo lo que podemos entender. La paz de Dios cuidará su corazón y su mente mientras vivan en Cristo Jesús”. Filipenses 4:6-7 (NTV)

En Filipenses 4:6-7 encontramos uno de los pasajes más difíciles de la Biblia para obedecer, “No se preocupen por nada; en cambio, oren por todo. Díganle a Dios lo que necesitan y denle gracias por todo lo que él ha hecho. Así experimentarán la paz de Dios, que supera todo lo que podemos entender. La paz de Dios cuidará su corazón y su mente mientras vivan en Cristo Jesús”.

No es fácil dejar de preocuparse por las cosas frecuentemente aterradoras que ocurren como parte cotidiana de nuestras vidas, pero Dios nos dice cómo enfrentarlas: “Ora por todo. . . Dale las gracias por todo lo que ha hecho”. La oración de gratitud trae paz. Dios dice que cuando empiezas a preocuparte, paras de orar.

Los padres entienden el poder de la gratitud. La mayoría de los padres no les gustaría que sus hijos pidan y no digan “gracias” por lo que reciben. Dios lo ve de la misma manera. Quiere que le pidamos lo que necesitamos y queremos. Más de 20 veces en el Nuevo Testamento, se nos dice que “pidamos”. Pero Él quiere que pidamos con agradecimiento.

La Biblia nos insta a ser específicos en nuestras peticiones y nuestras alabanzas. En lugar de un simple “gracias por todo”, quiere que le digamos por qué estamos agradecidos. Cuando le digo a mi esposa: “Estoy muy agradecido”, ella me dice que sea específico. A ella le gusta escuchar lo que aprecio de ella y por lo que estoy agradecido con ella.

Dios quiere escuchar lo mismo. Entonces cuando ores, dile a Dios de qué estás agradecido. La oración es una de las maneras más importantes en que le decimos a Dios “gracias”.

Agradecer a Dios de antemano es un gran paso de fe. La Biblia dice que cuando tenemos fe para agradecer a Dios por adelantado por una respuesta a nuestras oraciones, suceden milagros. Cuanto más agradecidos estamos, más trabaja Dios en nuestras vidas. La Biblia dice que Dios habita en la alabanza de su pueblo. Él fortalece y usa nuestra acción de gracias como un instrumento de poder en nuestras vidas.

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿Por qué es tan importante la gratitud para nuestra vida espiritual?Siendo lo más específico posible, ¿cuáles son las razones por las que estás agradecido con Dios? Pasa un tiempo en oración, y agradece a Dios por esas cosas.¿Cuáles son algunas maneras en que crees que Dios te bendecirá en el futuro? Agradece a Dios por esas cosas, incluso antes de que sucedan.

¿Estás listo para invitar a Jesús a tu corazón?
¿Quieres recibir el regalo de gracia que Dios te da? Es una oración simple que le dirás a Dios que aceptas el regalo de Jesús.

Oración

“Dios mío, tengo temor, pero quiero conocerte. No lo entiendo todo, pero te agradezco que me ames. Te agradezco que estuvieras conmigo, incluso cuando no lo reconocí. Te agradezco que estés para mí, que no enviaste a Jesús para condenarme sino para salvarme.

Admito que nunca me di cuenta de que necesitaba un Salvador, pero hoy quiero recibir el regalo de tu Hijo. Te pido que me salves de mi pasado, remordimientos, errores, pecados, hábitos, heridas y complejos. Necesito que me quites el estrés y llenes mi vida de tu amor. Necesito estar en paz contigo, y necesito que pongas tu paz en mi corazón.

Te pido que me salves para tu propósito. Quiero saber para qué me pusiste en esta tierra. Y quiero cumplir lo que tú quieres que yo haga. Quiero aprender a amarte, a confiar en ti y a tener una relación contigo. Te lo pido en el nombre de Jesús, Amén”.

Stop Talking About It and Start Doing It

“Hard work is worthwhile, but empty talk will make you poor.”

Proverbs 14:23 (CEV)

What you say has a direct connection to your heart.

Whatever your heart is filled with is going to come out of your mouth. If you’re filled with anger, anger is going to come out of your mouth. If your heart is filled with depression, it’s going to come out of your mouth. If your heart is filled with joy, that’s going to come out of your mouth.

The Bible says in Mark 12:30, “You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength” (NLT). You could also say it like this: Love God with all your talk, all your feelings, all your thinking, and all your acting. God shaped you to primarily be a talker, feeler, thinker, or doer.

Heart people have a hard time being quiet. They’re talkers. When you’re a heart person, you’ve got to let it out. You’ve got to tell other people. Heart people love to tell stories. They love to sit and converse, especially in heart-to-heart conversations.

The world needs people who are communicators. We need people who can lead discussions and who can verbalize what the rest of us feel. We need teachers, counselors, and coaches who can teach us and direct us. We need comedians. We need preachers. We need all of these people who are built on verbal skills and who are able to move the world forward.

God’s warning for talkers is this: You also have to act. Proverbs 14:23 says, “Hard work is worthwhile, but empty talk will make you poor” (CEV). In other words, you’ve got to move ahead. You’ve got to stop only talking about your plans and start making them happen.

Talk It Over

Incluso tus Defectos pueden Darle Gloria a Dios

“¡Gracias por hacerme tan maravillosamente complejo! Tu fino trabajo es maravilloso, lo sé muy bien”. Salmo 139:14 (NTV)

Cuando las personas están heridas, necesitan una verdad sencilla, no una verdad simplista. No es suficiente decirle a alguien que ore, lea la Biblia, o que vaya a la iglesia. Tienes que ayudarlos a conocer como cambiar sus vidas.

Y no podemos hacer cambios en nuestras vidas hasta que entendamos nuestra identidad. No puedes convertirte en todo lo que Dios quiere que seas hasta que abraces tu identidad.

Tú eres maravillosamente complejo (Salmo 139:14). Para cumplir el propósito de Dios, tienes que mirar todas las dimensiones de tu vida y entender cinco factores que influyen en tu identidad. Entonces, tendrás que hacer lo mejor con lo que se te ha dado. A todos se nos han dado diferentes padres, dolores, problemas, y potencial, pero todos daremos cuenta un día por lo que hicimos con esos aspectos.

Es como un juego de cinco cartas: Tú no barajas las cartas. Tú no eliges tus cartas. Tienes que jugar con la mano de cartas que se te dio.

El primer factor que te hace quien eres es tu química. Esto es, tu ADN, tus genes, tus hormonas, tu construcción química. Algunos de ustedes nacieron con una hipersensibilidad; otros tienen una gran tolerancia al dolor. Algunos de ustedes tienen poca energía; otros están rebotando entre las paredes. Algunos de ustedes tienen espaldas propensas a fallar, vista débil o huesos frágiles. Algunos de ustedes tienen bajos niveles de oxitocina, una hormona que afecta como nos relacionamos con otras personas.

No todos los defectos avergüenzan o son pecaminosos —¡Es la forma en la que Dios te creó! Me compré unos jeans desgastados que tenían una etiqueta que decía: “Estos jeans tienen marcas intencionales para hacerlos únicos”. Tus “genes” son lo mismo: Tienen defectos que te hacen único. Aquellas marcas son parte de tu diseño personalizado, Dios las planeó para Su propósito y gloria.

Nunca serás capaz de hacer un cambio en tu vida o cumplir el propósito de Dios para tu vida, hasta que entiendas que eres maravillosamente complejo y con marcas únicas para la gloria de Dios.

La pregunta entonces es esta: ¿Qué vas a hacer con la mano que te tocó?

¿Cuáles son las marcas que te hacen único?¿Cómo puedes usar esos defectos para darle gloria a Dios?¿Cómo funciona la sociedad con la contradicción de la verdad de que tus defectos tienen un propósito?Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más? Do Less So You Can Do More

“It’s useless to rise early and go to bed late, and work your worried fingers to the bone. Don’t you know he enjoys giving rest to those he loves?”

Psalm 127:2 (MSG)

The Bible says in Mark 12:30, “You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength” (NLT). Another way to say it is this: Love God with all your talk, all your feelings, all your thinking, and all your acting. God shaped you to primarily be a talker, feeler, thinker, or doer.

“Doers” love God with their strength. They are the energetic activists of life—the achievers, the accomplishers, the workers, and the people who push things forward and make things happen in the practical sense of life.

What is the purpose of “doers” in the world?

The world needs contribution. We don’t just need communication, compassion, and consideration. We’ve got to get to work and do it! We need people with initiative, energy, action, and a bias for achievement.

But we all have flaws, and for doers, it’s overwork. Doers are always working. They never stop to think, and they certainly don’t stop to feel. They are always busy!

God says in Psalm 127:2, “It’s useless to rise early and go to bed late, and work your worried fingers to the bone. Don’t you know he enjoys giving rest to those he loves?” (MSG). If you are a doer, that would be a good verse to put up on the mirror in your bathroom. God wants his loved ones to get their proper rest.

Some of you need to do less. Not less for God, but less in other areas so you’ll have more time to do what matters most.

The Bible says that when you become a believer, God makes you a new person inside: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV).

When you become a believer, your past is forgiven, you have a reason for living, and you have a home in heaven. Let me tell you something that doesn’t change when you come to Christ: Your personality doesn’t change. God doesn’t slow you down when you come to him. He just changes your direction. In fact, he wants to empower you. Remember, you got your personality from him.

God doesn’t want to make you a clone of everybody else in the way that you worship and serve and love him. He wants you to serve him with your personality. Not only that, but he will strengthen your personality, not dampen it. He’s going to make you more you than you’ve ever been before.

Confiar en Dios es Bueno para Tu Salud

“Dios mío, tú has sido bueno conmigo; ya puedo dormir tranquilo”. Salmo 116:7 (TLA)

Dios te ha dado el regalo de tu cuerpo, y viene con un manual para el propietario — la Biblia. Ahí están todas las instrucciones que necesitas para cuidarte y vivir una vida larga.

Ya sabes lo básico: Una nutrición adecuada, ejercicio y unas buenas noches de descanso. Pero hay otro factor de salud que puede ser que no hayas pensado para vivir bien y a largo plazo.

Confiar en Dios es bueno para tu salud. “Confía en el Señor de todo corazón y no en tu propia inteligencia” Proverbios 3:5 (NVI).

¿Por qué confiar en Dios es bueno para la salud? Porque cuando confías en Él, no te preocupas.

Salmo 116:7 dice, “ Dios mío, tú has sido bueno conmigo; ya puedo dormir tranquilo” (TLA). Si realmente confías en Dios, vas a estar menos estresado.

La Biblia dice en Proverbios 14:30, “El corazón tranquilo da vida al cuerpo; pero la envidia corroe los huesos” (NVI). No es sólo lo que comes, lo que es importante. ¡Es lo que te come! Puedes tener todos los alimentos macrobióticos y orgánicos, pero si tu cuerpo está lleno de resentimiento, preocupación, temor, lujuria, culpa, enojo, amargura o cualquier otra enfermedad emocional, eso va a acortar tu vida.

Tú decides:

Puedes preocuparte o puedes adorar.Puedes sentir pánico o puedes orar.

Mientras más ores, tendrás menos pánico. Relájate, ¡porque Dios se encargará de ti!

Why We Need Each Other

“Each of you as a good manager must use the gift that God has given you to serve others.”

1 Peter 4:10 (GW)

Your abilities are for the benefit of other people. The Bible says in 1 Peter 4:10, “Each of you as a good manager must use the gift that God has given you to serve others” (GW).

Nobody is good at everything. You need me, and I need you. Nobody has every talent. There are no perfect people who can say to the world, “I don’t need anybody else.” We need each other. We were made to work in teams! That’s why you need a small group and a church family. We’re better together.

Here’s the key to success: Build on your strengths so that your weaknesses become irrelevant. Every successful person does this. Just work on what you’re good at, and make it better.

Here’s a second rule of success: Team up with people who are good at what you’re not good at. Team up with people who complement you. Everybody has something to contribute. Nobody has it all together. We need each other.

This, by the way, is one of the purposes of marriage. In marriage we’re put together to complement each other’s strengths and to compensate for each other’s weaknesses. What happens when we don’t compensate for each other’s weaknesses? We criticize each other. That’s not what marriage is for. Marriage puts two sinners together—so there can be no perfect relationships. But in a marriage, you know the other’s weaknesses, so you can help compensate for them.

For example, take bill paying and budgeting. Who should do it? The one who does it better! The Bible doesn’t tell us who should do one role over another. Just figure out who does it better, and in doing that, you compensate for each other’s weaknesses. That’s why my wife, Kay, always drives; she’s a much more careful driver than I am.

This also applies to your work. If you want your business to be effective, here’s the key: Staff by SHAPE. Help people discover their SHAPE—their Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, and Experiences—and put them in the positions they’re good at. When you do that, you don’t have to manage them and you won’t have to motivate them. Why? Because they’re doing what they love to do, and they’re good at it.

God wants every person to use their abilities to help other people. We need each other!

What is your choice about Jesus?

God proved his goodness through his Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible says, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 CSB).

Are you ready to trust God to fulfill his promise of eternal life? If so, start by praying this simple prayer: “Dear God, I believe Jesus Christ is your Son. I confess I have sinned, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus died to take away my sins and that you raised him to life. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow him as Lord from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Dios Te ha Dado un Manual de Instrucciones para tu Cuerpo

“Guarda en tu corazón mis mandamientos. Porque prolongarán tu vida muchos años y te traerán prosperidad”. Proverbios 3:1b-2 (NVI)

Si yo tuviera una píldora que prometiera añadir años a tu vida, probablemente pagarías mucho dinero por ella. Pero te digo que, como cristiano, tú ya tienes la llave para una larga vida y ¡es gratis!

Dios nos ha dado los principios para el control de la salud en su Palabra, la Biblia. La Biblia es el manual de instrucciones para tu cuerpo. Como David dijo, “Tú me hiciste; me creaste. Ahora dame la sensatez de seguir tus mandatos” Salmo119:73 (NTV). Y en Deuteronomio, dice “No son palabras vacías; ¡son tu vida! Si las obedeces, disfrutarás de muchos años en la tierra” Deuteronomio 32:47 (NTV). Dios dice “Si tú haces lo que yo digo con tu salud, disfrutarás de una vida larga”.

Nuestro versículo clave de hoy dice, “Guarda en tu corazón mis mandamientos. Porque prolongarán tu vida muchos años y te traerán prosperidad” Proverbios 3:1b-2 (NVI).  ¿Cuáles son algunos de esos mandamientos? “Confía en el Señor de todo corazón, y no en tu propia inteligencia. Reconócelo en todos tus caminos, y él allanará tus sendas. No seas sabio en tu propia opinión; más bien, teme al Señor y huye del mal. Esto infundirá salud a tu cuerpo y fortalecerá tu ser. Honra al Señor con tus riquezas y con los primeros frutos de tus cosechas. Así tus graneros se llenarán a reventar…” Proverbios 3:5-10 (NVI).

Estos versos resaltan algunos factores que probablemente no tomas en cuenta, pero te mantendrán saludable, estos son: tranquilidad, confianza en Dios, integridad, humildad y generosidad. Estas cosas causarán que tu salud mejore, porque tu salud física es influenciada por tu salud espiritual.

Hoy, toma un momento para meditar en Proverbios 3:1-10 y pídele a Dios que te muestre la forma en la cual puedes crecer en tranquilidad, confianza, integridad, humildad y generosidad.

What to Do With Unused Ability

“When the master comes and finds the servant doing his work, the servant will be blessed.”

Luke 12:43 (NCV)

All of us have unused abilities. But there are three ways that you can start cultivating your abilities so that they are being used for good and for God’s glory.

1. Estimate your abilities.
Do an assessment of your life. Do an audit of your abilities. What are you good at doing? Make a list. If there’s one thing I could say to young people today to prepare for their future, this is it: Know your strengths. Know your weaknesses. Consider the capabilities God has given you.

Parents, help your kids understand their SHAPE—their Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, and Experiences. Your children have far more abilities than they think.

2. Dedicate your abilities.
Commit them to God for the use he intended. Romans 12:1 says, “Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to his service and pleasing to him” (GNT). Say, “God, you gave me these abilities. Now I’m going to give them back to you. I want to use them for the purpose for which you gave them to me.”

3. Cultivate your abilities.
That means you practice, improve, sharpen, and develop them. Any ability that God has given you can be increased with use. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 10:10, “If the ax is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed, but skill will bring success” (NIV).

How do you get skill? Practice. God says you need to sharpen your ax. A dull ax takes more energy. He says to work smarter, not harder. Sharpening your abilities—your aptitudes, your skills—is a spiritual responsibility.

God has invested enormously in you. First, he created you. Second, he shaped you with spiritual gifts and personality. Then he sent Jesus to die for you. God has made an incredible investment in your life! And he expects a return on the investment. He’s going to ask you one day, “What did you do with what you were given? How did you use your abilities to honor me, to serve others, to make a living, and to be an example? How did you use them to help other people?”

In Luke 12:43, Jesus said, “When the master comes and finds the servant doing his work, the servant will be blessed” (NCV). I want you to have that blessing. I want God to find you using your abilities in the ways that he intended.

Talk It Over

What are you doing with what God has given you?
How can you help the young people in your life understand how God has shaped them?
Take time to thank God for the abilities he’s given you. If you’re not sure what to pray for, say this prayer: “God, I don’t even know all the abilities I’ve got, but I thank you for them. Help me to discover them. Today I dedicate them back to you. I want to use what you’ve given me for your purposes. I want to cultivate my abilities. I want to get better at what I’m doing. I want to honor you by being the best I can be. I want to use my abilities to honor you, to serve others, to make a living, and to be an example. I want to use my abilities to have money to share with those who are poor and to help my church grow and reach out. Help me to make it so. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Cómo Permanecer Entusiasmado toda la Vida

“Nunca dejen de ser diligentes; antes bien, sirvan al Señor con el fervor que da el Espíritu. Alégrense en la esperanza, muestren paciencia en el sufrimiento, perseveren en la oración”. Romanos 12:11-12 (NVI)

Para poder lograr tus metas, tienes que poder mantener tu entusiasmo a largo plazo.

Ralph Waldo Emerson dijo, “Nunca lograrás nada grande sin entusiasmo”. Yo creo eso con todo mi corazón. Esa frase se ha hecho realidad en mi vida. Tienes que tener pasión, tienes que tener entusiasmo, o nunca llegarás a la meta.

La mayoría de las personas me considerarían una persona entusiasta, y lo soy. Pero no he sido entusiasta por una semana o un mes o un año. Mi entusiasmo no ha disminuido en cinco, diez o veinte años. He sido consistentemente entusiasta acerca de las metas que he fijado por más de 30 años.

¿Cómo puedes hacer eso? ¿Cómo te mantienes entusiasta día a día a pesar de los obstáculos, dificultades, callejones sin salida, presiones y críticas? ¿Cómo ser entusiasta por más de 30 años?

Un pensamiento positivo no es suficiente. Tus habilidades psicológicas no son suficientes. Sumergirte en optimismo no es suficiente.

La forma de mantener tu entusiasmo por el resto de tu vida lo encuentras en la palabra: “entusiasmo”. La palabra entusiasmo viene de la palabra griega “en theos”. “theos” es el vocablo griego para Dios. Así que “en theos” significa “en Dios”.

Cuando estés “en Dios”, serás entusiasta. Ese es el tipo de entusiasmo que no se afecta por la economía o el clima o tus circunstancias. Es eterno porque estás sujeto a un Dios eterno. Estás en Cristo.

Pablo nos dice cómo conseguir esto en Romanos 12:11-12. Él dice: “Nunca dejen de ser diligentes; antes bien, sirvan al Señor con el fervor que da el Espíritu. Alégrense en la esperanza, muestren paciencia en el sufrimiento, perseveren en la oración” (NVI).

Si quieres cumplir tus propósitos este año, necesitas el poder de Dios para que te alegres en la esperanza, seas paciente en el sufrimiento y perseveres en la oración.

Te invito a hacer esta oración:

“Querido Dios, no quiero pasar otro día sin tu presencia en mi vida, toma cada parte de mi corazón. Te ofrezco mi cuerpo. Me dedico a ti. Por todo lo que has hecho por mí, me ofrezco como un sacrificio vivo en adoración espiritual a Ti”.

“Humildemente admito que necesito ayuda. Quiero que me ayudes a renovar mi mente. Ayúdame a pensar en la forma en que tú quieres que piense. Por favor perdona mi orgullo. No quiero tener un concepto más alto de mí, del que debo tener. Mi fe necesita desarrollarse, y necesito tu ayuda para tener las metas que se puedan medir de tal forma que yo las pueda dirigir. Perdona mis intentos de cambiar por mí mismo”.

“Quiero llenar mi vida con amor. Quiero llenar mi vida de Ti. Ayúdame a obtener ayuda de mis compañeros en mi grupo pequeño. Ayúdame a deleitarme en honrar a otras personas, a enfocarme en dar mi vida y dejar que tú te ocupes de mis necesidades. Quiero nutrir mi entusiasmo al estar en ti. Ayúdame a regocijarme en la esperanza, a ser paciente en la aflicción y a ser constante en la oración. Me entrego a ti. En el nombre de tu hijo Jesús. Amén”.
