Be Confident in Whose You Are

When Jesus said, “I am the light of the world,” he was defining himself. He was saying, “I know who I am.” At least 18 times in the Bible, Jesus said, “I am” and then gave a description. He described himself as the door, the bread of life, the way, the truth, the resurrection, and the life. Over and over, he defined himself. Jesus knew who he was (and still is), and as a result, he was not under pressure.

This is the principle of identity. As long as you are unsure of your identity, you’re going to be pressured to fit into other people’s molds. They will manipulate you. They will try to make you into what they think you ought to be, rather than what God made you to be.

One of the major causes of stress comes from trying to be somebody you’re not. When you are fearful that someone’s going to find out what you’re really like and that you might not be able to keep up the façade, it causes stress.

The only way you can counterbalance outside external pressures is to have an internal sense of satisfaction about who you are and who God made you to be. You discover who you are by knowing whose you are.

The Bible says that you were created by God. You are deeply loved by him. You are accepted as you are. He has a plan for your life. Until you settle this issue of identity, you will be insecure and you will be pressured by stress. You cannot serve other people until you settle this issue.

Jesus constantly did things that surprised everybody else. He put himself below others and served them. None of the disciples would have ever thought to wash each other’s feet in the Upper Room because of their insecurity. But Jesus always served from a position of strength. He knew who and whose he was, so it didn’t matter that he lowered himself to serve them.

Service comes from self-esteem. Until you overcome your insecurity and feel good about yourself, you won’t feel like helping anyone else. Be secure in who you are and whose you are so that you can effectively serve others.

Estar firme por Dios no solo te impacta a ti sino a aquellos que te importan en esta vida. Tiene un impacto eterno.

Cuando tienes miedo de hablar de Dios en tu vida diaria, eso es natural y normal. Pero también es temporal. Ese temor solo permanecerá contigo por unos momentos.

El beneficio de hablar valerosamente por Dios permanecerá contigo por trillones y trillones y trillones de años.

Jesús dice esto en el Sermón del Monte: “Dios los bendice a ustedes cuando la gente les hace burla y los persigue y miente acerca de ustedes y dice toda clase de cosas malas en su contra porque son mis seguidores. ¡Alégrense! ¡Estén contentos, porque les espera una gran recompensa en el cielo! Y recuerden que a los antiguos profetas los persiguieron de la misma manera” (Mateo 5:11-12 NTV).

Nota que estos versículos no dicen que eres bendecido si las personas te humillan a causa de que seas insoportable. He escuchado a muchas personas que se complacen de ser perseguidos por ser cristianos cuando en realidad son perseguidos porque no son amables con otros.

No obtienes crédito por eso.

Pero si eres perseguido por hablar humildemente por la verdad, Jesús dice que puedes alegrarte. ¿Por qué? Dios te recompensará en público.

Cuando llegues al cielo, quiero que tengas muchas recompensas. Quiero que seas recompensado porque tuviste el valor de estar firme en tu trabajo y decir, “Soy un creyente en Cristo. Sé que no todos están de acuerdo con esto, pero él cambió mi vida y estoy muy agradecido. No lo sirvo por obligación; lo sirvo por amor. Estoy tan agradecido. Mi pasado ha sido perdonado, tengo un propósito en la vida, tengo un hogar en el cielo”.

Cuando eres condenado, perseguido y molestado por hacer eso, Jesús dice que estás en buena compañía. Las personas han hecho eso a los testigos de Dios y profetas, por años y años. Es parte del trato. La oscuridad no soporta a la luz. La maldad no soporta la bondad.

Pero, cuando eso sucede, Jesús dice, “No te preocupes. Serás recompensado por tu valor en el cielo”.

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿Cómo te ayuda a soportar la persecución el saber que Dios te recompensará en la eternidad por tu fidelidad?
¿De qué manera el testimonio fiel de los creyentes a través de las edades te ayuda a ser fuerte en medio del acoso de otros por tu fe?
¿Cuál es una forma en la que Dios te está llamando a demostrar valor y hablar a pesar de la crítica inevitable?

God Blesses Those Who Are Put Down Because of Him

Taking a stand for God won’t just impact you and those you care about in this life. It’ll have an eternal impact.

When you’re afraid to speak up for God in your everyday life, that’s natural and normal. But it’s also temporary. That fear will just stay with you for a few moments.

The benefits to courageously speaking out for God will stay with you for trillions and trillions and trillions of years.

Jesus says this in the Sermon on the Mount: “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way” (Matthew 5:11-12 NLT).

Notice that these verses don’t say you’re blessed if people put you down because you’re being obnoxious. I hear many people who complain about being persecuted for being a Christian when actually they’re put down because they’re just not being nice to others.

You get no credit for that.

But if you’re persecuted for humbly speaking up for truth, Jesus says you can be happy. Why? God will reward you in heaven.

When you get to heaven, I want you to have a lot of rewards. I want you to be rewarded because you had the courage to stand up at work and say, “I am a believer in Christ. I know not everybody agrees with this, but he’s changed my life and I’m so grateful. I don’t serve him out of duty; I serve him out of love. I’m just so grateful. My past has been forgiven, I have a purpose for living, I have a home in heaven.”

When you get condemned, persecuted, and teased for doing that, Jesus says you’re in good company. People have done that to God’s witnesses and prophets for ages and ages. It’s part of the deal. Darkness can’t stand the light. Evil can’t stand goodness.

But when that happens, Jesus says, “Don’t worry about it. You’ll be rewarded for your courage in heaven.”

El Poder de Dios Para Seguir Adelante

“Y estoy seguro de que Dios, quien comenzó la buena obra en ustedes, la continuará hasta que quede completamente terminada el día que Cristo Jesús vuelva”. Filipenses 1:6 (NTV)

La Biblia nos dice que Dios siempre termina lo que comienza: “quien comenzó la buena obra en ustedes, la continuará hasta que quede completamente terminada” (Filipenses 1: 6 NTV). No dice: “Dios podría terminarlo”. No dice: “Dios espera terminarlo”. Dice que Dios la continuará hasta que quede completamente terminada. ¿Qué significa eso?

Significa que, si realmente le has dado tu vida a Jesucristo, si te has abierto a Dios y dijiste: “Cristo, sé el número uno en mi vida”, vas a llegar al cielo. No hay duda al respecto. Caso cerrado. Trato hecho. Vas a cruzar la línea de meta porque no depende de tu rendimiento; depende de la gracia sustentadora de Dios. La única pregunta es cómo terminarás la carrera. Sabes tan bien como yo que algunas personas terminan una carrera pobremente, mientras otras la terminan bien.

No quiero que te metas a rastras al cielo. No quiero que apenas cruces la línea de llegada. Quiero ayudarte a terminar bien la carrera de la vida. Quiero que disfrutes de la vida, de la vida abundante, de descubrir aquello para lo que Dios te hizo, y que luego lo hagas.

¿Cómo puedes estar seguro de que vas a terminar la carrera de la vida? Por la gracia sustentadora de Dios. Dios no quiere simplemente salvarte. Él quiere sostenerte a lo largo de la vida. Él quiere que llegues bien al final de la carrera.

¿Qué es la gracia sustentadora?

La gracia sustentadora es el poder para seguir adelante cuando tienes ganas de rendirte. Es el poder para hacer lo correcto cuando no tienes ganas de hacerlo.

Hay muchos tropiezos en el maratón de la vida. Pero independientemente de lo que pases, sin importar a qué te enfrentes este año, puedes contar con la gracia sustentadora de Dios.

God’s Power to Keep Going

The Bible tells us that God always finishes what he starts: “God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished” (Philippians 1:6 NLT). It doesn’t say, “God might finish it.” It doesn’t say, “God hopes to finish it.” It says God will finish it. What does that mean?

It means if you have really given your life to Jesus Christ — if you’ve opened yourself up to God and said, “Christ, be number one in my life” — you are going to make it to heaven. There’s no doubt about it. Case closed. Done deal. You are going to make it across the finish line because it doesn’t depend upon your performance; it depends upon God’s sustaining grace. The only question is how you finish the race. You know as well as I do that some people finish a race poorly while other people finish a race well.

I don’t want you to just get into heaven. I don’t want you to just get across the finish line. I want to help you finish the race of life well. I want you to enjoy life, the abundant life — to figure out what God made you for and then do it.

How can you be sure you’re going to finish the race of life? Because of God’s sustaining grace. God doesn’t want to just save you. He wants to sustain you through life. He wants you to make it.

What is sustaining grace?

Sustaining grace is the power to keep on going when you feel like giving up. It’s the power to do the right thing when you don’t feel like doing the right thing.

There are many pitfalls in the marathon race of life. But regardless of what you go through, no matter what you face this year, you can count on God’s sustaining grace.

“My purpose in writing is to encourage you and assure you that what you are experiencing is truly part of God’s grace for you. Stand firm in this grace” (1 Peter 5:12 NLT).

Principios Para Un Cambio Personal: Nuevo Pensamiento

“En cambio, dejen que el Espíritu les renueve los pensamientos y las actitudes”. Efesios 4:23 (NTV)

El cambio requiere un nuevo pensamiento. Para poder cambiar, debemos aprender sobre la verdad de Dios y comenzar a tomar buenas decisiones, pero también debemos cambiar nuestra forma de pensar.

Ya hemos hablado de esto antes: la batalla por el pecado comienza en tu mente, no en tu comportamiento. La forma en cómo piensas, determina la forma en cómo te sientes, y la forma en cómo te sientes, determina la forma cómo actúas. Si quieres cambiar tu forma de actuar, empieza por cambiar tu forma de pensar. Además, si quieres cambiar la forma en cómo te sientes, debes comenzar por la forma cómo piensas.

Piensa – Siente – Actúa

Por ejemplo, puedo decir: “Tengo que amar más a mis hijos”, pero no es así como funciona. O alguien puede decir: “Necesito amar más a mi cónyuge”, pero eso no va a funcionar. No puedes luchar por tu cuenta para llegar a un sentimiento. Debes cambiar tu forma de pensar sobre tus hijos, sobre tu esposo, sobre tu esposa, y eso cambiará la forma en cómo te sientes, y así es como luego cambiará la forma en cómo actúas. “En cambio, dejen que el Espíritu les renueve los pensamientos y las actitudes”. (Efesios 4:23 NTV).

Permítanme resumirlo de esta manera: no eres lo que crees que eres, sino más bien, lo que piensas, eso eres. La batalla por el pecado, la batalla para lidiar con esos defectos en tu vida, defectos que no te gustan, comienza en tu mente. Si quieres cambiar algo en tu comportamiento o cualquier cosa en tus emociones, comienza con tus pensamientos y tu actitud.

La renovación de tu mente está relacionada con la palabra “arrepentimiento”. Sé que el arrepentimiento es una palabra negativa para mucha gente. Creen que significa algo malo, algo que realmente no quieres hacer, algo doloroso. Piensan en un hombre parado en la esquina de una calle con un letrero que dice: “Arrepiéntanse”. El mundo está a punto de terminar”.

El arrepentimiento no tiene nada que ver con tu comportamiento. Se trata de cambiar tu mente, aprender a pensar de manera diferente. “Arrepentirse” significa simplemente hacer un cambio de sentido. Es algo que haces en tu mente, no con tu comportamiento. Cambiar tu forma de pensar, afectará tus emociones y afectará tu comportamiento.

Cuando me arrepiento, hago un cambio de sentido, es algo mental. Paso de la culpa, al perdón. Paso de la falta de propósito, a tener propósito en la vida. Paso de la no esperanza, a la nueva esperanza. Paso de la frustración, a la libertad. Paso de la oscuridad a la luz. Me vuelvo del infierno al cielo. Paso del odio al amor.

También cambio la forma en cómo pienso acerca de Dios. Él no está enojado conmigo. Soy un pecador, pero soy profundamente amado. Cambio la forma en cómo pienso de mí, cambio la manera en cómo pienso sobre mis hijos y cambio la forma en cómo pienso sobre mi esposa. Cambio la manera en cómo pienso sobre el mundo, cambio la forma en cómo pienso sobre la economía y cambio la manera en cómo pienso sobre mi pasado, mi presente y mi futuro.

Entonces, ser renovado en tu mente significa más que cambiar tu forma de pensar sobre Dios y Jesús; también significa que cambias la forma en cómo piensas sobre tus propios defectos. La Biblia nos dice, “Piensen y actúen como Jesucristo. Esa es la «misma manera de pensar» que les estoy pidiendo que tengan”. (Filipenses 2:5 PDT).

Principles for Personal Change: New Thinking

Change requires new thinking. In order to change, we must learn about God’s truth and start making good choices, but we also must change the way we think.

We’ve talked about this before: The battle over sin starts in your mind, not in your behavior. The way you think determines the way you feel, and the way you feel determines the way you act. If you want to change the way you act, you start by changing the way you think. In addition, if you want to change the way you feel, you must start with the way you think.

Think – Feel – Act

For instance, I can say, “I need to love my kids more,” but that isn’t going to work. Or someone can say, “I need to love my spouse more,” but that isn’t going to work. You can’t fight your way into a feeling. You must change the way you think about your kids, about your husband, about your wife, and that will change the way you feel, which will then change the way you act. The Bible says, “There must be a spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes” (Ephesians 4:23 NLT).

Let me sum it up this way: You are not what you think you are, but rather, what you think, you are. The battle for sin, the battle to deal with those defects in your life that you don’t like — it starts in your mind. If you want to change anything in your behavior or anything in your emotions, you start with your thoughts and your attitude.

The renewal of your mind is related to the word “repentance.” I know repentance is a dirty word for a lot of people. They think it means something bad, something you don’t really want to do, something painful. They think of a guy standing on a street corner with a sign that says, “Repent. The world’s about to end.”

Repentance has nothing to do with your behavior. It is about changing your mind, learning to think differently. “Repent” simply means to make a mental U-turn. It’s something you do in your mind, not with your behavior. Changing the way you think will then affect your emotions and affect your behavior.

When I repent, I make a mental U-turn. I turn from guilt to forgiveness. I turn from purposelessness to purpose in life. I turn from no hope to new hope. I turn from frustration to freedom. I turn from darkness to light. I turn from hell to heaven. I turn from hatred to love.

I also change the way that I think about God. He’s not mad at me; I’m deeply flawed, but I’m deeply loved. I change the way I think about you, I change the way I think about my kids, and I change the way I think about my wife. I change the way I think about the world, I change the way I think about the economy, and I change the way I think about my past, my present, and my future.

So being renewed in your mind means more than changing the way you think about God and Jesus; it also means you change the way you think about your own defects. The Bible tells us, “Let this same attitude and purpose and [humble] mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5 AMP).

Dios Nos Diseñó Para Más Que Esta Tierra

“Así que no nos fijamos en lo visible, sino en lo invisible, ya que lo que se ve es pasajero, mientras que lo que no se ve es eterno”. 2 Corintios 4:18 (NVI)

Dios nos creó para vivir en el cielo con él por la eternidad. El cielo es nuestro hogar, no la tierra. Ese es el por qué algunas veces experimentamos descontento e insatisfacción en la vida. ¡No somos completamente felices porque no deberíamos estarlo! De otra manera, podríamos pensar que podemos vivir sin Dios. Él nos creó para anhelar algo mucho mejor –un hogar en el cielo con Él.

Un pez nunca será feliz viviendo en la tierra, porque fue hecho para el agua. Un águila nunca se sentirá satisfecha si no se le permite volar. Nunca te sentirás completamente satisfecho en la tierra, porque fuiste hecho para más. Tendrás momentos felices aquí, pero nada comparado con lo que Dios ha planeado para ti.

También es el por qué las promesas de Dios parecen incompletas, algunas oraciones parecen no ser contestadas, y algunas circunstancias parecen injustas. Pero esto no es el fin de la historia.

Darse cuenta de que la vida en la Tierra es simplemente temporal debería cambiar radicalmente nuestros valores. Los valores eternos, no los temporales, deberían ser el factor decisivo para tus decisiones. Como C. S. Lewis observó, “Todo lo que no es eterno, es eternamente inútil”.

La Biblia nos dice “Así que no nos fijamos en lo visible, sino en lo invisible, ya que lo que se ve es pasajero, mientras que lo que no se ve es eterno” (2 Corintios 4:18 NVI).

God Designed Us for More Than This Earth

God created us to live in heaven with him for eternity. Heaven is our home, not Earth. That’s why we sometimes experience discontentment and dissatisfaction in life. We’re not completely happy here because we’re not supposed to be! Otherwise, we might think we can live without God. He created us to long for something much better — a home is heaven with him.

A fish would never be happy living on land, because it was made for water. An eagle could never feel satisfied if it wasn’t allowed to fly. You will never feel completely satisfied on Earth, because you were made for more. You will have happy moments here, but nothing compared with what God has planned for you.

This is also why some of God’s promises seem unfulfilled, some prayers seem unanswered, and some circumstances seem unfair. But this is not the end of the story.

Realizing that life on Earth is just temporary should radically alter your values. Eternal values, not temporal ones, should be the deciding factor for your decisions. As C. S. Lewis observed, “All that is not eternal is eternally useless.”

The Bible tells us to “fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18 NIV).

Tienes Acceso Directo a Dios

Dios dice que eres un sacerdote. Dependiendo de tu origen, esto te puede asustar o confundir. Pedro dice que los dos beneficios que tienen los sacerdotes ahora están disponibles para quienes son creyentes.

En el Antiguo Testamento, los sacerdotes hacían dos cosas:

Ellos tenían el derecho, el privilegio y la responsabilidad de ir directamente ante Dios. Podían orar y hablar con Dios, adorar y tener comunión con Dios. Todos los demás tenían que ir a través del sacerdote.
El sacerdote tenía el privilegio y la responsabilidad de representar a Dios ante la gente y ministrar a las necesidades de otras personas (sirviendo).

Estas son dos verdades para ti cuando te conviertes en creyente.

La Biblia dice que cuando Jesús murió en la cruz, había un velo en el templo que separaba el Lugar Santísimo, donde estaba el Espíritu de Dios, de donde estaba el hombre. Solo los sacerdotes podían ir detrás de ese velo una vez al año. Cuando Jesús murió en la cruz, Dios rasgó ese velo, unos 70 pies, de arriba a abajo, simbolizando que ya no había barrera.

Ahora tienes acceso directo a Dios. No tienes que orar a través de alguien. No tienes que confesarte a alguien.  No tienes que tener comunión con Dios a través de alguien más. Lee tu Biblia, habla con el Señor y ten comunión directa con Él.

También has sido dotado para el ministerio de servir a otras personas. Cada cristiano es un ministro, no un pastor, sino un ministro. Cada vez que usas tus talentos y dones para ayudar a otros, estás ministrando.

“Dios nos salvó y nos eligió para que seamos parte de su pueblo santo. No hicimos nada para merecerlo, sino que Dios, por su gran amor, así lo planeó. Dios ya nos amaba desde antes de crear el mundo” (2 Timoteo 1:9 TLA) ¿Por qué Dios te salvó? Para servirlo. Un cristiano que no sirve es una contradicción.

¿Cómo sabes cuál es tu ministerio? Mira tus talentos, regalos y habilidades. Cuando usas esos talentos y dones para ayudar a otras personas, eso se llama ministerio: nada sofisticado o que asuste al respecto. Es simplemente ayudar a otros. ¿Puedes ser sacerdote en una oficina de ventas? Te apuesto que puedes. ¿Puedes ser sacerdote como contador? Por supuesto. ¿Conduciendo un camión? Por supuesto. Cada vez que estás ayudando a otras personas en el nombre de Dios, estás ministrando.

¿Cómo has crecido cerca de Jesús a través del ministerio y servicio a otros creyentes?
¿Cómo aprovechas al máximo siendo un sacerdote? ¿Aprovechas al máximo tu acceso directo a Dios?
