God’s Presence: Your Anchor through Any Storm

No one gets to live a life without setbacks. All of us will face storms from time to time.

The real issue is how we respond. What happens next? Do setbacks dominate you? Do you stop trying and give up?

If we’re not careful, setbacks will lead us toward unhelpful decisions:

Drifting from our goals. We hear the little voice inside that asks, “What’s the use of trying?” Then we stop striving for what God has clearly called us to do.
Discarding what we value. Sometimes, after a period of intense pain, our priorities change—we let go of what once mattered greatly to us.
Despairing about our future. We figure we’re doomed, we’re finished, and it’s all over.

As a pastor now for more than 40 years, I’ve watched many people react to crises in one of those three ways. I’ve discovered that the true test of faith is not how high you jump when you’re singing praises to God, but how straight you walk when you’re going through the valley of the shadow of death.

You’ll always drift in a storm without the right anchor. And only one anchor will really do.

One of the Bible’s most famous passages says it like this: “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me” (Psalm 23:4 NIV).

God’s presence is the greatest anchor in any situation.

When you’re feeling hopeless, remember that God hasn’t left you. Make him your rock-solid anchor. No matter how dark your valley, you’ve never been closer to God than you are at this exact moment.

When I make that statement to people as they’re going through setbacks, they often tell me: “Well, I don’t feel his presence.”

But it really has nothing to do with how you feel. The Bible says God is there in your darkest valley. That’s reality—whether you believe it or not.

The Bible tells us, “I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us” (Romans 8:38-39 The Message).

No matter what you’re going through, God and his love are right there with you.

That truth offers stability in any storm.

La Presencia de Dios: tu Ancla a través de cualquier Tormenta

 

“Aun si voy por valles tenebrosos, no temo peligro alguno porque tú estás a mi lado” (Salmo 23:4 NVI).

Nadie va por la vida sin contratiempos. Todos nosotros enfrentaremos tormentas de vez en cuando.

El verdadero problema es cómo respondemos a ellas. ¿Qué pasa después? ¿Los contratiempos te dominan? ¿Dejas de intentarlo y te rindes?

Si no tenemos cuidado, los contratiempos nos llevarán a tomar decisiones innecesarias:

Nos desvían de nuestras metas. Escuchamos esa vocecita en nuestro interior que pregunta: “¿De qué sirve intentarlo?” Y dejamos de esforzarnos por lo que Dios claramente nos ha llamado a hacer.
Nos llevan a descartar lo que valoramos. A veces, tras un periodo de intenso sufrimiento, nuestras prioridades cambian —dejamos de lado lo que antes nos importaba mucho.
Nos hacen perder esperanza en nuestro futuro. Pensamos que estamos condenados, acabados, que todo ya se acabó.

Como pastor ya por más de 40 años, he visto a muchas personas reaccionar a las crisis en una de estas tres formas. Descubrí que la verdadera prueba de la fe no es qué tan alto saltas cuando cantas alabanzas a Dios, sino qué tan recto caminas cuando estás atravesando el valle de sombra de la muerte.

Siempre estarás a la deriva en una tormenta sin el ancla adecuada. Y hay solo un ancla que realmente te servirá.

Uno de los más famosos pasajes de la Biblia dice así: “Aun si voy por valles tenebrosos, no temo peligro alguno porque tú estás a mi lado” (Salmo 23:4 NVI).

La presencia de Dios es la mayor y más poderosa ancla en cualquier situación.

Cuando te sientas ya sin esperanza, recuerda que Dios no te ha dejado. Hazlo tu ancla sólida como una roca. No importa cuán oscuro sea tu valle, nunca has estado más cerca de Dios que en este exacto momento.

Cuando hago esa afirmación a las personas que están pasando por contratiempos, a menudo me dicen: “Bueno, no siento su presencia”.

Pero realmente no tiene nada que ver con cómo te sientes. La Biblia dice que Dios está allí en tu valle más oscuro. Esa es la realidad, lo creas o no.

La Biblia nos dice: “Y estoy convencido de que nada podrá jamás separarnos del amor de Dios. Ni la muerte ni la vida, ni ángeles ni demonios, ni nuestros temores de hoy ni nuestras preocupaciones de mañana. Ni siquiera los poderes del infierno pueden separarnos del amor de Dios. Ningún poder en las alturas ni en las profundidades, de hecho, nada en toda la creación podrá jamás separarnos del amor de Dios, que está revelado en Cristo Jesús nuestro Señor.” (Romanos 8: 38-39 NTV).

No importa por lo que estés pasando, Dios y su amor están ahí contigo.

Esa verdad ofrece estabilidad en cualquier tormenta.

Los Contratiempos no pueden hacer Fracasar el Propósito de Dios

 

“¡Pablo, no temas, porque ciertamente serás juzgado ante el César! Además, Dios, en su bondad, ha concedido protección a todos los que navegan contigo” (Hechos 27:24 NTV).

A veces, un contratiempo se basa en tus propias acciones o decisiones. Cometiste un error. Hiciste algo que lastimó a otra persona. Tú desobedeciste a Dios.

Y ahora te enfrentas a una tormenta por eso.

Pero a menudo, las tormentas que enfrentamos en la vida no se deben a algo que hicimos. En cambio, sufrimos por las malas decisiones de otras personas, o incluso por sus pecados.

Hechos 27 nos da un ejemplo dramático de sufrir un revés debido a las decisiones tontas de otros. Pablo había sido llevado injustamente a juicio por delitos que no había cometido. Era ciudadano romano, por lo que tuvo la oportunidad de apelar a César en casos de delitos graves.

En el barco prisión que se dirigía a Roma, Pablo les dijo a los demás que se encaminaban hacia el desastre. Pero nadie escuchó, y no pasó mucho tiempo antes de que les azotara una terrible tormenta.

Pero eso no significa que la tormenta desvió el propósito de Dios para Pablo, y tampoco una tormenta tiene que desviar el propósito de Dios para ti.

El propósito de Dios para tu vida es mayor que cualquier contratiempo que puedas atravesar. Un ángel le dijo a Pablo esto en Hechos 27:24: “¡Pablo, no temas, porque ciertamente serás juzgado ante el César! Además, Dios, en su bondad, ha concedido protección a todos los que navegan contigo” (NTV).

A pesar del contratiempo el ángel le dijo a Pablo que un día se presentaría ante César y compartiría su testimonio. El propósito de Dios no sería frustrado.

Dios no necesita un plan B para tu vida. Luchar contra un contratiempo, ya sea por tu culpa o la de otra persona, no significa que Dios no trabaje a través de tu vida. Cuando el desastre golpea, Dios simplemente ajusta a sus planes.

Cuando la decisión de alguien le da un vuelco a tu vida, Dios lo usa para su gloria.

Cuando el error de otra persona te pone en una situación difícil, Dios lo soluciona de todos modos.

Cuando sientes que lo has perdido todo, Dios hace lo increíble para que puedas hacer lo imposible.

Tú no puedes hundir el propósito de Dios. Tampoco alguien más puede hacerlo.

Setbacks Can’t Derail God’s Purpose

Sometimes a setback is rooted in your own actions or choices. You made a mistake. You did something that hurt another person. You disobeyed God.

And now you’re facing a storm because of it.

But often, the storms we face in life aren’t because of something we did. Instead, we suffer because of other people’s poor decisions—or even their sins.

Acts 27 gives us a dramatic example of suffering a setback because of the foolish choices of others. Paul had been unfairly put on trial for crimes he didn’t commit. He was a Roman citizen, so he had the opportunity to appeal to Caesar in capital-offense cases.

On the prison ship heading toward Rome, Paul told the others that they were headed toward disaster. But no one listened, and it didn’t take too long before they hit a terrible storm.

But that didn’t mean the storm sidetracked God’s purpose for Paul—and a storm doesn’t have to sidetrack God’s purpose for you, either.

God’s purpose for your life is greater than any setback you’ll ever go through. An angel told Paul this in Acts 27:24: “Don’t be afraid, Paul, for you will surely stand trial before Caesar! What’s more, God in his goodness has granted safety to everyone sailing with you”’ (NLT).

Despite the setback, the angel told Paul he’d one day stand before Caesar and share his testimony. God’s purpose wouldn’t be thwarted.

God doesn’t need a Plan B for your life. Hitting a setback—whether it’s your fault or someone else’s—doesn’t mean God won’t work through your life. When disaster hits, God just fits it into his plans.

When someone else’s decision turns your life upside down, God uses it for his glory.When someone else’s mistake puts you in a difficult situation, God works through it anyway.

When you feel like you’ve lost everything, God does the incredible so you can do the impossible.

You can’t sink God’s purpose. Neither can anyone else.

¿Por qué Necesitas a otros en Tiempos Difíciles?

 

“Porque sé que la oración de ustedes y la ayuda del Espíritu de Jesucristo darán como resultado mi libertad” (Filipenses 1:19 NTV).

Cuando experimentamos contratiempos, nuestra respuesta más común es nuestra peor respuesta: Deseamos retirarnos, construir una muralla a nuestro alrededor, alejar a las personas.

Pero eso es la última cosa que deberíamos hacer.

Cuando un contratiempo deja débil tu fe, necesitas a otras personas que confíen en Dios por ti. Necesitas a la familia de la iglesia que te ayude a soportar.

Cuando Job perdió a su familia, dinero y salud, fue un contratiempo devastador –como lo hubiera sido para cualquiera.

Pero esto es lo que le dijo uno de sus amigos: “¡Cuidado! No dejes que tu ira contra el prójimo te lleve a burlarte de Dios… Por el contrario, glorifícalo por sus poderosas obras que lo han hecho famoso” (Job 36:18, 24 NBV).

Ese es un gran consejo. Cuando está en medio de los problemas, no te amargues. Reúnete con otros que puedan orar contigo, adorar contigo, y apoyarte.

¿Dónde encuentras ese tipo de apoyo?

Primero, reúnete con otros para adorar en una iglesia local. Adorar con otras personas te dará una nueva perspectiva sobre tus contratiempos.

Segundo, involúcrate en algún tipo de estudio Bíblico en un grupo pequeño. La mayoría de las iglesias son demasiado grandes para construir relaciones asistiendo solo a los servicios de adoración. Necesitas un grupo de diez a doce personas donde puedas no solo estudiar la Biblia, sino que puedas también compartir tu dolor y orar con otros.

No te recuperarás por tu cuenta. Necesitas al pueblo de Dios para edificarte y ayudarte a enfocarte en Dios.

Es un gran paso hacia tu recuperación. Al igual que Pablo. Él escribió sobre el apoyo de otros cristianos mientras él estaba en prisión en Roma: “Porque sé que la oración de ustedes y la ayuda del Espíritu de Jesucristo darán como resultado mi libertad” (Filipenses 1:19 NTV).

Con la ayuda y oración del pueblo de Dios, tu contratiempo solo será temporal. Tus mejores días están por venir.

Why You Need Others in Tough Times

When we experience setbacks, our most common response is our worst response: We want to withdraw, to build a wall around ourselves, to push people away.

But that’s the last thing we should do.

When setbacks leave your faith weak, you need other people to trust God for you. You need a church family to help support you.

When Job lost his family, finances, and health, it was a devastating setback—just as it would have been for anyone.

But here’s what one of Job’s friends told him: “Don’t let your anger and the pain you endured make you sneer at God . . . Others have praised God for what he has done, so join with them” (Job 36:18, 24 CEV).

That’s great advice. When you’re in the midst of troubles, don’t get bitter. Join with others who can pray with you, worship with you, and support you.

Where do you find that kind of support?

First, join with others for worship at a local church. Worshiping with other people will give you a new perspective on your setbacks.

Second, get involved in some kind of small group Bible study. Most churches are too big to build relationships just through attending worship services. You need a group of 10 to 12 people where you can not only study the Bible, but you can also share your pain and pray with others.

You won’t find a comeback on your own. You need God’s people to build you up and help you focus on God.

It’s a huge step toward your comeback. Just ask Paul. He wrote this about the support of other Christians as he sat in a Roman prison: “Because you are praying for me and the Spirit of Jesus Christ is helping me, I know this trouble will bring my freedom” (Philippians 1:19 NCV).

With the support and prayers of God’s people, your setback is only temporary. Your best days are ahead.

Cuando vengan los Contratiempos, no te Amargues, Obtén el Panorama Completo

 

“Nada he traído a este mundo, y nada me voy a llevar. ¡Bendigo a Dios cuando da! ¡Bendigo a Dios cuando quita!” (Job 1:21 TLA).

Cuando te encuentras con un contratiempo, está bien decirle a Dios que estás molesto, enojado o deprimido. Está bien expresar todas tus emociones a Dios.

Solamente no te amargues.

La amargura es decir que no confías en Dios cuando llegan los problemas. Es como un veneno que destruirá tu vida si lo permites.

Job soportó todo tipo de problemas. Él perdió a su familia, su fortuna, y su salud. Pero en lugar de amargarse, se mantuvo enfocado en el panorama completo.

Job dijo, “Nada he traído a este mundo, y nada me voy a llevar. ¡Bendigo a Dios cuando da! ¡Bendigo a Dios cuando quita!” (Job 1:21 TLA).

Job entendió que Dios seguía en control incluso cuando todo parecía desmoronarse.

Yo estuve ahí cuando nacieron mis tres hijos. Ellos no traían nada consigo. Ellos no tenían juguetes, una cartera, un ropero o un maletín. También he predicado en bastantes funerales para saber que nadie se lleva un remolque de posesiones a la tumba.

Vienes sin nada. Te vas sin nada.

Cuando llegan los contratiempos a tu vida –y seguro vendrán- debes enfocarte en el hecho de que Dios tiene una visión más amplia en mente. Muchas cosas cambiarán en tu vida. Tu fe será probada y evaluada.

Como Job, no se te ha prometido una vida perfecta. Tampoco recibirás una explicación cuando llegue un contratiempo. Pero puedes elegir confiar en Dios de cualquier modo. No importa el contratiempo que enfrentes, la verdad es:

Dios nunca dejará de amarte.
Dios tiene un plan para tu vida.
Dios está interesado en cada detalle de tu vida.
Dios está en control de las cosas incluso si no lo entiendes.
Dios te protegerá.

Sin importar el contratiempo, el panorama completo de tu vida es ese. Puedes basar tu vida en esas cinco verdades cuando todo se derrumbe.

No tendrás amargura si mantienes tus ojos en un panorama completo como ese.

When Setbacks Come, Don’t Get Bitter—Get the Big Picture

When you hit a setback, it’s okay to tell God you’re mad, you’re sad, or you’re depressed. It’s okay to express all your emotions to God.

Just don’t get bitter.

Bitterness is saying you don’t trust God when troubles hit. It’s like a poison that will tear your life apart if you let it.

Job endured all kinds of problems. He lost his family, his fortune, and his health. But instead of becoming bitter, he kept his focus on the big picture.

Job says, “I was born with nothing, and I will die with nothing. The Lord gave, and now he has taken away. May his name be praised!” (Job 1:21 GNT).Job understood that God was still in control even though everything else seemed to be falling apart.

I was there when each of my three children was born. They didn’t come with anything. They didn’t have toys, a portfolio, a wardrobe, or a briefcase. I’ve also preached enough funerals to know that no one drives a trailer of possessions to the graveside.

You come with nothing. You leave with nothing.

When setbacks come your way—and they most certainly will come—you must focus on the fact that God has your big picture in mind. Many things will change in your life. Your faith will be tested and tried.

Like Job, you haven’t been promised a perfect life. You likely won’t get an explanation when setbacks come. But you can choose to trust God anyway. No matter what setbacks you face, trust that:

God will never stop loving you.
God has a plan for your life.
God cares about every detail of your life.
God is in control of things even when you don’t understand it.
God will protect you.

Regardless of the setback, that’s the big picture about your life. You can base your life on these five truths when everything else falls apart.

You won’t get bitter if you keep your eyes on a big picture like that.

Dios puede Manejar tu Honestidad

 

“Levántense durante la noche y clamen. Desahoguen el corazón como agua delante del Señor” (Lamentaciones 2:19 NTV).

Solo has tenido un contratiempo horrible. Has perdido un trabajo. Has terminado una relación. Has fracasado en alguna manera.

¿Qué haces enseguida?

¿Solo sonríes y te aguantas? ¿Le dices a Dios lo que crees que él quiere escuchar?

No. La primera cosa que haces es decirle a Dios como te sientes. Desahogas tu dolor. Cuando eres honesto con Dios sobre tus emociones, es en realidad un acto de adoración.

Job nos dio un gran ejemplo de esto. Job perdió todo –su familia, su hacienda, su casa y su fortuna.

Pero la Biblia no endulza su respuesta. “Job se levantó y rasgó su vestido en señal de dolor; después se rasuró la cabeza y se postró en el suelo para adorar” (Job 1:20 NTV).

Job sufrió en la forma en la que en el medio este hacían en su tiempo, rasgando sus vestiduras y rasurando su cabeza. Pero entonces él adoró a Dios.

En cualquier ocasión que experimentes pérdida en tu vida, debes afrontar tus emociones:

Enojo: ¿Por qué me pasó esto?
Aflicción: ¿Qué he perdido?
Conmoción: ¿Qué está sucediendo aquí?
Temor: ¿Qué irá a suceder luego?

Cuando experimentas un contratiempo, necesitas expresar cada una de tus emociones. Dios puede manejarlas porque él es quién te las dio.

La única razón por la que tienes emociones es porque fuiste creado a la imagen de Dios. Es lo que hace a los humanos únicos entre la creación de Dios. Dios es un Dios emocional; él tiene emociones. Él puede manejar tu enojo, aflicción, conmoción y tu temor.

Job fue brutalmente honesto con Dios, y tú también puedes serlo. Job dijo, “No puedo evitar hablar; debo expresar mi angustia. Mi alma llena de amargura debe quejarse” (Job 7:11 NTV).

La respuesta correcta a un contratiempo no es mostrar una buena respuesta. Dios nunca quiere que falsees una emoción.

En uno de los contratiempos más difíciles en toda la Biblia, después de que Jerusalén habían sido saqueados y destruidos y los israelitas habían sido asesinados, esclavizados y exiliados, el profeta Jeremías escribió esto: “Levántense durante la noche y clamen. Desahoguen el corazón como agua delante del Señor” (Lamentaciones 2:19 NTV).

Con Dios, la honestidad siempre es la mejor táctica.

God Can Handle Your Honesty

You’ve just had an awful setback. You’ve lost a job. You’ve ended a relationship. You’ve failed in some way.

What do you next?

Do you just grin and bear it? Do you tell God what you think he wants to hear?

No. The first thing you do is you tell God how you feel. You unload your pain. When you’re honest with God about your emotions, it’s actually an act of worship.

Job gives us a great example of this. Job loses everything—his family, his livestock, his home, and his wealth.

But the Bible doesn’t sugarcoat his response. “Job stood up and tore his robe in grief. Then he shaved his head and fell to the ground to worship” (Job 1:20 NLT).

Job grieved in the way Middle Easterners in his day would have done it, by tearing his robe and shaving his head. But then he worshiped God.

Anytime you experience loss in your life, you’ll face four emotions:

Anger: Why did this happen to me?
Grief: What have I lost?
Shock: What’s going on here?
Fear: What’s going to happen next?

When you experience a setback, you need to express every one of those emotions. God can handle them because he is the one who gave them to you.

The only reason you have any emotions is because you are made in the image of God. It’s what makes humans unique among God’s creation. God is an emotional God; he has emotions. He can handle your anger, your grief, your shock, and your fear.

Job was brutally honest with God, and you can be, too. Job said, “I cannot keep from speaking.

I must express my anguish. My bitter soul must complain” (Job 7:11 NLT).

The right response to a setback isn’t to fake a good response. God never wants you to fake an emotion.

In one of the most difficult setbacks in the entire Bible, after Jerusalem had been looted and destroyed and the Israelites had been killed, enslaved, and exiled, the prophet Jeremiah writes this: “Rise during the night and cry out. Pour out your hearts like water to the Lord” (Lamentations 2:19 NLT).

With God, honesty is always the best policy.
