God, Why Is This Happening to Me?

Sometimes God intentionally hides his face from us. Why? So we’ll learn to trust him and to live by faith rather than by our feelings.

For instance, when Job experienced a lot of pain and despair, he asked a lot of legitimate questions: “Why let people go on living in misery? Why give light to those in grief” (Job 3:20 GNT).

These “why” questions are human nature; we all ask them. We have this misconception that if we understand the reason behind our pain, it will lessen the pain—or at least make it easier to endure.

But Proverbs 25:2 says, “It is God’s privilege to conceal things” (TLB). The only reason you know anything about God is because he has chosen to reveal himself to you. Here’s the truth: There are some things you’ll never understand until you’re in heaven.

God doesn’t owe you an explanation for anything. God doesn’t have to check in with you first before he does something. God doesn’t have to get your permission before he allows things to happen in life. God is God, and we’re not always going to understand why some things happen.

One day it’s all going to be clear. It’s all going to make sense. You’re going to be able to say, “So that’s why God allowed that in my life!” Until then, God wants you to trust him.

The Holy Spirit Brings God’s Truth to Mind

God speaks through the Holy Spirit. He gives you thoughts. He gives you suggestions. He puts impressions or notions in your mind. When the Devil talks to you, he tempts you. But when God talks to you in your mind, he inspires you.

Jesus says in John 14:26, “The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and make you remember all that I have told you” (GNT).

If you are a Christian, then the Holy Spirit is your teacher and counselor. Some people spend thousands of dollars on a life coach. You’ve already got one!

Notice that John 14:26 says the Holy Spirit will “make you remember.” The Holy Spirit speaks directly to your mind. He doesn’t speak in an audible voice. Why would he need to? He doesn’t need to go through your ears. He goes directly to your mind. “His Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children” (Romans 8:16 NLT).

The Holy Spirit brings God’s truth to mind, but he relies on you to put God’s Word in your mind. That’s why you need to get into the Bible. When you read, study, and fill your mind with God’s Word, you are storing up truth inside of you—truth the Holy Spirit will bring to mind at just the right time.

El Espíritu Santo trae a la Mente la Verdad de Dios

 

“El Espíritu Santo vendrá y los ayudará, porque el Padre lo enviará para tomar mi lugar. El Espíritu Santo les enseñará todas las cosas, y les recordará todo lo que les he enseñado” ( Juan 14:26 TLA).

Dios habla a través del Espíritu Santo. Te da pensamientos. Te da sugestiones.  Pone impresiones o ideas en tu mente. Cuando el Diablo te habla, él te tienta. Pero cuando Dios habla a tu mente, te inspira.

Jesús dice en Juan 14:26, “El Espíritu Santo vendrá y los ayudará, porque el Padre lo enviará para tomar mi lugar. El Espíritu Santo les enseñará todas las cosas, y les recordará todo lo que les he enseñado” (TLA).

Si eres un cristiano, entonces el Espíritu Santo es tu maestro y consejero. Algunas personas gastan centenares de dólares en un mentor de vida. ¡Tú ya tienes uno!

Fíjate que en Juan 14:26 dice que el Espíritu Santo “les recordará”. El Espíritu Santo habla directamente a tu mente. No habla en una voz audible. Él va directo a tu mente. “Pues su Espíritu se une a nuestro espíritu para confirmar que somos hijos de Dios”. (Romanos 8:16 NTV).

El Espíritu Santo trae la verdad de Dios a tu mente, pero el confía en que tu pongas la Palabra de Dios en tu mente. Por eso necesitas permanecer en la Palabra de Dios. Cuando lees, estudias y llenas tu mente con la Palabra de Dios, estás almacenando la verdad dentro de ti -la verdad que el Espíritu Santo te traerá a la mente en el momento justo.

Eres un Aprendiz o difícil para Enseñarte

 

“En esa ocasión, Jesús hizo la siguiente oración: «Oh Padre, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, gracias por esconder estas cosas de los que se creen sabios e inteligentes, y por revelárselas a los que son como niños’” (Mateo 11:25 NTV).

Jesús quiere que seamos como niños pequeños, porque debemos seguir aprendiendo para que podamos madurar y entender los planes de Dios. Los niños están ansiosos por aprender. No están a la defensiva. No dicen: “no necesito aprender a caminar. No necesito aprender a hablar. No puedes enseñarme nada sobre la lectura”. Saben que no lo saben todo y están ansiosos por aprender.

Así es como Jesús quiere que seas: dispuesto a escuchar, ansioso por aprender, abierto a sugerencias y correcciones de otros. Las personas docentes entienden que es imposible que alguien sepa todo sobre cada tema. No tienes tiempo en la vida para aprender todo de la experiencia personal. Es más sabio aprender de la experiencia de los demás.

La Biblia dice en Proverbios 15:12: “Los burlones odian ser corregidos, por eso se alejan de los sabios” (NTV). El orgullo, en su raíz, es la inseguridad. Debido al orgullo, las personas actúan como si lo supieran todo. ¿Te suena familiar?

Cuando tienes miedo de mostrar que no sabes cómo hacer algo o cómo responder una pregunta, puede ser una señal que no eres un aprendiz. Si te pones a la defensiva cuando alguien te corrige, puede ser una señal de que no eres un aprendiz.

Tienes una opción: ¿Serás humilde y abierto al aprendizaje, o vivirás con una negación orgullosa? ¿Serás enseñable o inalcanzable? Dios es para ti y te apoyará a medida que aprendas cosas nuevas. Y como un niño que crece hasta la madurez, puedes seguir aprendiendo: ese es el deseo de Dios para tu vida.

Cuando alguien trata de corregirte, ¿cómo reaccionas normalmente? ¿Tu reacción revela tu humildad o tu arrogancia?
Piensa en una discusión que hayas tenido con alguien. ¿Cómo alguno de ustedes demostró humildad? ¿Cómo hizo una diferencia?
¿Por qué es importante seguir aprendiendo?

Are You Teachable or Unteachable?

Jesus wants us to be like little children because we need to remain teachable so we can mature and understand God’s plans. Children are eager to learn. They’re not defensive. They don’t say, “I don’t need to learn to walk. I don’t need to learn to talk. You can’t teach me anything about reading.” They know that they don’t know it all, and they’re eager to learn.

That’s how Jesus wants you to be: willing to listen, eager to learn, open to suggestions and corrections from others. Teachable people understand that it’s impossible for anyone to know everything about every subject. You don’t have time in life to learn everything from personal experience. It’s wiser to learn from the experience of others.

The Bible says in Proverbs 15:12, “Conceited people do not like to be corrected; they never ask for advice from those who are wiser” (GNT). Pride, at its root, is insecurity. Because of pride, people act like they know it all. Does that sound familiar?

When you’re afraid to show that you don’t know how to do something or how to answer a question, it may be a signal that you’re not teachable. If you get defensive when someone corrects you, it may be a sign you’re not teachable.

You have a choice: Will you be humble and open to learning, or will you live in prideful denial? Will you be teachable or unreachable? God is for you, and he’ll support you as you learn new things. And like a child growing to maturity, you can keep learning—that’s God’s desire for your life.

Un Corazón Orgulloso se Opone a Dios

“Dios se opone a los orgullosos, pero da gracia a los humildes. Así que sométanse a Dios” (Santiago 4:6-7 NVI)

A menudo hacemos planes sin siquiera consultar con Dios. Luego oramos y le pedimos a Dios que bendiga nuestros planes, a pesar de que no le pedimos que participe en ellos. Simplemente asumimos que nuestros planes son su voluntad. Entonces, cuando nuestros planes no suceden en el tiempo que queremos o no suceden en absoluto, nos enojamos con Dios. Eso se llama orgullo, y Dios odia el orgullo.

Probablemente hay muchas personas a las que no te gustaría oponerte, pero realmente no deseas que Dios se oponga. No hay forma de que ganes esa. Cuando eres orgulloso, la Biblia dice que te opones a Dios en ese mismo momento. De hecho, estás operando como un enemigo de Dios cada vez que te llenas de orgullo. Así de grave es. Entonces, ¿qué significa rendirte y rendir tus planes a Dios?

Romanos 6:13 dice: “Entréguense completamente a Dios, porque antes estaban muertos pero ahora tienen una vida nueva.” (NTV). Entréguense significa decir: “Dios, voy con tus planes para mi vida, no los míos. Tengo planes, tengo sueños, tengo metas, tengo ambiciones, pero sé que me pusiste en esta tierra con un propósito, y voy a elegir intencionalmente tu plan para mi vida en lugar de la mía”.

Entregarse completamente a Dios es el mejor camino hacia el éxito porque en lugar de que Él se convierta en parte de tu plan, Él te hará parte de su plan.

A Prideful Heart Opposes God

We often make plans without even consulting God. Then we pray and ask God to bless our plans, even though we didn’t ask him to take part in them. We just assume that our plans are his will. Then, when our plans don’t happen on the timetable we want or they don’t happen at all, we get angry with God. That’s called pride, and God hates pride.

There are probably a lot of people you wouldn’t want to oppose, but you really don’t want to be opposed by God. There’s no way you’re going to win that one. When you’re prideful, the Bible says you’re in opposition to God at that very moment. In fact, you’re operating as an enemy of God anytime you get full of pride. That’s how serious it is. So, what does it mean to surrender yourself and your plans to God?

Romans 6:13 says, “Give yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life, and surrender your whole being to him to be used for righteous purposes” (GNT). Surrendering means saying, “God, I’m going with your plans for my life, not my own. I’ve got plans, I’ve got dreams, I’ve got goals, I’ve got ambitions, but I know that you put me on this earth for a purpose, and I’m going to intentionally choose your plan for my life instead of my own.”

Surrendering to God is the best path to success because instead of him becoming part of your plan, he will make you a part of his plan.

Cómo Regocijarse en la Bondad de Dios para con los Demás

 

“Gócense con los que se gozan y lloren con los que lloran” (Romanos 12:15 NBLH).

Cuando ves a Dios proveer para otros, puedes elegir responder ya sea con alegría o con resentimiento.

De algunas maneras, la segunda mitad del versículo de hoy es más fácil de hacer que la primera. Es fácil llorar con los que lloran.

Pero es mucho más difícil regocijarte con alguien que tiene éxito. De hecho, a veces nos sentimos amenazados por ello, y lo resentimos. Eso es porque pensamos que el mundo es un pastel gigante que está dividido en rebanadas. Si alguien obtiene una rebanada que sea ligeramente más grande que la mía, eso debe significar que mi rebanada es más pequeña.

Ese pensamiento está equivocado. ¡Dios tiene todas las rebanadas del pastel del mundo! Él no se quedará sin bendiciones. Él no se quedará sin gracia. Hay más que suficiente para todos, y solo porque Dios bendice a alguien no significa que no habrá suficientes bendiciones para ti también. Él quiere bendecirte, pero tal vez de diferentes maneras.

La envidia evita que entres en la alegría de otras personas. Como resultado, no te alegras mucho con lo que sucede en el mundo. La envidia te hará una persona muy miserable.

Esto es lo que sucede en la parábola de los trabajadores de la viña en mateo 20. El propietario contrató a algunas personas al comienzo del día y a otros al final del día, pero él le pagó a todos lo mismo. Los primeros trabajadores pensaron que los habían engañado. En lugar de alegrarse de su pago, ellos lo resintieron.

Pero si eliges regocijarte en la bondad de Dios hacia otros, puedes estar alegre todo el tiempo –porque algo bueno siempre está pasando a alguien.

How to Rejoice in God’s Goodness to Others

When you see God providing for others, you can choose to respond with either joy or resentment.

In some ways, the second half of today’s verse is much easier to do than the first half. It’s easy to weep with those who weep.

But it’s much more difficult to rejoice when someone experiences success. In fact, we sometimes feel threatened by it, and we resent it. That’s because we think the world is a giant pie that’s divided up into slices. If somebody gets a slice that’s a little bit bigger than mine, that must mean my slice is going to be smaller.

That kind of thinking is wrong. God’s got all the pie slices in the world! He doesn’t run out of blessings. He doesn’t run out of grace. There’s more than enough to go around for everybody, and just because God blesses somebody else doesn’t mean there’s not enough blessing for you, too. He wants to bless you, but it may be in different ways.

Envy keeps you from entering into the joy of other people. As a result, you don’t enjoy much that goes on in the world. Envy will make you a pretty miserable person.

This is what happened in the parable of the vineyard workers in Matthew 20. The owner hired some people at the start of the day and others later in the day, but he paid them all the same. The first workers thought they’d been cheated. Instead of enjoying their pay, they resented it.

But if you choose to rejoice in God’s goodness to others, you can be joyful all the time—because something good is always happening to somebody.

Learn to Be Content

Instead of focusing on what you don’t have and what didn’t happen, you can choose to be grateful for what you do have and what has happened. This doesn’t come naturally, not even for the apostle Paul, who said, “I have learned to be content.” Being content is a learning process.

It’s hard to admit we struggle with envy because it’s such an ugly emotion. When you’re envious of others, you really want them to fail, because it makes you feel better that they don’t have more than you. That’s pretty crazy, isn’t it? If we can learn to be grateful for what we have, we can begin to get rid of these feelings of envy.

It’s important to understand that envy is not about having a desire or a dream or a goal. It’s good to have those. Envy is not about looking forward to something or hoping that something can happen in your life or even wondering if you should have some thing. Instead, envy is resenting somebody who has already obtained what you desire or who has reached a goal you have yet to attain. Envy says you can’t be happy until you get that desire or reach that goal. Envy is not being grateful for what you already have.

The Bible tells us that we already have more than we need and far more than we deserve. Every good thing in our lives is a gift from God, and it is up to him to decide when and how he blesses us. It’s up to us to choose to be grateful and make the most of what we’ve been given.
