Welcome to Briarcrest Academy, where sometimes, only the wicked survive.

Excerpt:

Cuba’s POV

Not exactly a meet-cute…

The room closed in, making me sweat. I hadn’t talked to her in over a year, and now here we were, face-to-face. Two ex-lovers who hated each other.

I had to get away from her.

Dovey tilted her head as I stood, giving me a scathing glare. “Leaving so soon? Yeah, go ahead, cut and run. Coward.”

I ignored her and tried to get Weinstein’s attention, to let her know she could flunk me for all I cared.

“Before you go, tell me one thing, and I’ll make sure we aren’t partners in this class. You’ll be free of me,” she said.

“What?” I asked, my voice going all raspy, blocking all the words I wanted to say. They weren’t things she ever needed to hear.

“Why so cruel to me? You aren’t to the other girls you date and dump. Why single me out?”

I seethed. “And it didn’t take you long to find someone else, now did it? How is Spider? Does he get you hot like I did?”

She smirked. “He’s fine. He thinks I hung the moon. He thinks you’re an ass. I agree.”

I tightened my fists and pressed them against my thighs, swearing to myself I wasn’t responding to her bait. I swore. She was a dangerous game I didn’t need to play.

Suddenly, her face fell. Was she recalling the last time we were together? Was she remembering how I used to…

“I trusted you,” she whispered, all her anger seeming to be gone. The unsteadiness of her voice undid me, sent me right over the edge of that precarious cliff I’d been hanging on to by the skin of my teeth.

Yeah, she hadn’t been the only one who’d trusted me. I’d ruined them all. Every last one. Dark thoughts assaulted me, of the blood I had on my hands.

Snap! My pencil broke and small pieces flew across my desk and into the empty space between us.

I wanted to pummel my desk until my fists bled. I wanted to punch a hole through the wall, the floor, my face.

Everything was my fault. Just mine.

She’d been collateral damage, the kind that breaks everyone involved. And I was sorry for it, but sometimes you do what hurts because it’s for the best.

But she was my kryptonite, leaving me no option but to hurt her. Again.

I didn’t think about my cruel words, I just said them. “You were a curiosity, Dovey. You weren’t the usual BA girl, and I wanted a taste. That’s all. I moved on when it got boring. Get over it.”

Author Bio:

Ilsa Madden-Mills is a loving wife and mother, a loyal friend, and a teacher. When all that is done, she writes. Obsessively.

She spent several years teaching high school English, but now hangs out at home with two small kids, a neurotic cat, and her Viking husband. She collects magnets and rarely cooks except to bake her own pretzels.

When she’s not typing away at a story, you can find her drinking too much Diet Coke, jamming out to Pink, or checking on her carefully maintained chocolate stash.

She loves to hear from fans and fellow authors.

Very Wicked Things is Book 2 of the BA Series.

Very Bad Things is currently available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and iBooks.

Not At First by Phalla S. Rios

17969333
Synopsis

Falling for two men at the same time was something Angel Mabbott never expected to happen.

Leaving a past full of pain and loss in California, Angel is determined to make something of her life when she starts college in Minneapolis. But life takes a turn when she finds herself torn between Kevin and Roman.

Kevin Hawken is a domineering man who forces himself into Angel’s life and changes everything she thought she knew. But how much can he be trusted when he is so secretive about himself?

Angel was instantly intrigued when she first laid eyes on Roman Conti, an Investment firm owner. He was everything she ever wanted in a man: romantic, loving, and protective over her.

As Angel begins to weave a bitter web of desire and deceit, will she find herself consumed, or will she be able to find her way out and follow her heart?

*New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

Chelly’s Thoughts <

Angel Mabbott is a broken soul who finds herself moving to Minneapolis to start a new life.  Her plan is to lie to everyone about her past and start completely over, which proves to be easier said than done, especially when she meets not one, but two guys, who are interested in her.  She is reminded daily of her past, how long can she hide it from them?  She also knows she can’t keep both of the guys, but she doesn’t want to hurt either one.  Which will she choose?

Option number 1 – Kevin Hawken.  On the outside he’s the typical bad boy – hot, muscles, tattoos, dark and dangerous.  The downside is he’s extremely cocky, not to mention temperamental and moody.  But he genuinely cares for Angel and wants to take care of her, if only he could get her away from that other guy that Kevin just doesn’t trust at all

Which brings us to option number 2 – Roman Conti.  At first glance, he’s this extremely romantic, shy, generously wealthy CEO, and his smile makes Angel want to do anything he asks.  It doesn’t take long to learn that shy, sweet Roman is actually a very strict, controlling, dominating, demanding man who expects Angel to do exactly as he says or be punished.  We can see that, but for some reason Angel doesn’t see him that way.

Angel thinks she wants Roman, that he is better for her because he is sweet and caring, but she is quickly developing feelings for Kevin and can’t deny her attraction to him.  She also knows Kevin has secrets that he is hiding, and she wants him to open up to her, without her having to open up herself.  Both guys want her, neither will share – who will she choose?  Will she make the right choice, or will her decision cost her more than her heart?

This story definitely kept my attention and I did enjoy it, but the characters just seemed to move ridiculously fast, and Angel is the most confusing person I’ve ever met.  One minute she’s being loyal and can’t do anything wrong, the next minute she’s begging for it.  Not to mention she is not the smartest girl when it comes to her decisions, I wanted to knock some sense into her myself.  Overall, it was pretty good, and the ending did leave me wanting to know what happens next, so I will be looking forward to the release of Always at First.  Hopefully some of the questions I still have from this one will be answered.

About the Author

Excerpt

We push through the glass door and past the bouncer who eyes me from head to toe as we make our way into Hank’s.  Of course, we form our usual beeline to the bathroom and the stall with no door.

“All right, ladies, what’s the plan tonight?  Who’s getting a piece before they go home for a month?” Hayden questions.  She scans all of us, and most have their hands raised but Georgia and me.  “Char, I hate to break it to you, but if you don’t get a piece, it’s your own damn fault.  Georgia, we know you well enough to know that you’re gonna have those hips rockin’ the dance floor with one guy all night long.”

I just shake my head.  Sometimes being sober isn’t fun.  Hell, it never is, but tonight’s about cutting lose and staying in control.

We make our way to the bar and order Bud Lights all around plus my water.  Then, it’s to the dance floor.  The sound of Flo Rida’s “Wild Ones” echoes through the speakers, and we know exactly what to do.  We hit the dance floor and go hard.  It’s about us girls having a good time tonight. Here we don’t have to worry about some ass trying to interrupt or put moves on us that we don’t want.  Hayden starts acting a fool by doing that damn sprinkler dance move, and I totally lose it.  We all take turns goofing off and busting out old school moves.

When Drake’s “Started from the Bottom” comes across the speakers, we quit goofing off and start dancing our asses off.  Before we know what’s going on, the entire baseball team is surrounding us and enjoying the view.  Songs bleed from one to the next. Once sweat begins to drip down my back, I pull my hair up into a messy bun and continue to enjoy the night.

By song number four, a smokin’ hot baseball player has his strong hands wrapped around my waist.  I swear I’ve just met Chipper Jones fifteen years ago!  I continue to dance and take in the aroma of sweat and Dolce and Gabbana.  Holy crap.  I never thought those two things would go together.  The songs change pace and begin to slow.  I know I need to separate myself from him, because at this point I’m not looking for someone new.  As I start to pull away, he grabs my hand and pulls me close.

“Hey, Char, I’m Tucker, or can I call you Squirrel?”  I must have looked like a damn deer in headlights because I completely froze.  No one called me that but Joe.  WTF?  My breath begins to heighten, and I can feel sweat building under my arms.  Tucker must have noticed as well.  “Um, did I say something wrong?  I thought that was your nickname?”

I swallow hard.  “Well, that’s what Joe calls me.”

“So, is it okay if I call you that?”  His eyes looked as sincere as they could with the amount of alcohol he had flowing in his veins.  I shake my head no.

“I’d rather you not.”

“All right, but just so you know, he’s a complete idiot for letting you go that easy.”  Here we go.  Another night with my drama.  What do I do?  I have to get him to shut up about Joe before I freakin’ lose it.  I take my hands and run them up his washboard stomach.  I can feel every chiseled ab and indention.  I look up at him, and he gets the point.  Not one more word about Joe.  As the song comes to an end, he pulls me in close and lifts my chin.  “Like I said, he’s a fuckin’ idiot.”  Then his lips brush mine.

My mind takes a moment to focus on what is going on.  Warm, soft, hungry lips are covering mine. Tucker pulls away from me and kisses my forehead as the next song, “Roar” by Katy Perry, begins to play. I start to laugh inside thinking about Hayden and then I glance at the Kluft girls who are thinking the exact same thing.  I smile at Tucker and make my way to the Kluft girls about the time the chorus begins, and we begin to sing at the top of our lungs.  You would have thought our life depended on it.

I know it’s near closing time, which means the one song that always ends a night at Hank’s is about to be played.  I push that thought to the back of my brain and just let loose for the next twenty minutes.  When the first chord of “Let’s Get It On” begins to play, I back away from the dance floor.

As I turn to walk away, piercing blue eyes are staring back at me. Joe.  Joe’s here?  My heart begins to hurt.  I want to forgive him, but just can’t.  Not yet.

Joe gives me no option.  He takes my hand and guides me back to the dance floor.  Georgia looks like she is shooting darts straight at him.  He ignores her and wraps his arms around mine.  I drop my head to his chest and tears begin to fall.  Why can’t my nightmare end?  Why?

We attempt to dance, but our worlds have stopped.  He stands with his arms around my trembling body, and I look up to him as the song ends.  Barely audible words escape his lips. “Squirrel, I’m here when you’re ready.”

I wipe the tears from my face as I pull myself from his embrace.  I turn and leave him standing alone on the dance floor.  The Kluft girls are waiting for me at the door. Georgia pulls me in for a hug.  We exit Hank’s and pile into the Love Machine, and I don’t look back.  As I take a deep breath, crank the van, and begin to pull out, I see Joe walking out of Hank’s.  Our eyes meet, and I turn my head as quickly as possible.  I do not want to feel any connection to Joe, but my heart tells me otherwise.

Description:

When I wake up in a dark, unfamiliar room, I have no idea what’s waiting for me in the shadows. My imagination conjures up demons of the worst kind.

Reality is much worse:

A collar with no leash. A prison with no walls. And a life stripped of meaning.

I am presented with a vile contract and asked to sign. It outlines the terms of my servitude. The only information I have about my captor are the two small letters inked at the bottom:

J.S.

Armed with only my memories, I must do everything I can to avoid becoming ensnared in his twisted mind games. But in the end, it all comes down to one choice:

Resist and die.

Or submit, and sign my life away

Excerpt:

“Lilly.”

Oh God. It’s him. There’s no mistaking that rich, masculine treble.

What’s he doing down here?

“M-Mr. Stonehart,” I stutter, turning. I curse my inability to hide my surprise. He totally caught me off-guard. I have to look up to meet his eyes. Then up some more.

The face that I find is so striking it should belong to a Greek god.

He’s younger than I expected. Late thirties, maybe early forties.

That means he started his company when he was younger than me!

Dark scruff lines his angular cheeks. His jet-black hair is styled in long, natural waves. My fingers itch to run through it.

Totally inappropriate.

He has a prominent nose that might be too big on a less imposing man, but on him, it’s perfect.

In short, he’s a package of the purest masculinity I’ve ever seen.

And then there are his eyes. Oh my God. His eyes. They pierce into me like honing missiles. They are the deepest black I have ever seen. They would be frightening if they weren’t so beautiful. When the light reflects a certain way, you catch a glimpse of the purple underneath.

They are like midnight sapphires. His eyes reveal a cunning intellect. Those eyes do not miss a thing.

Add all that to his towering height, his wide shoulders, his confident-yet-at-ease posture… and Stonehart cuts an intimidating figure.

My gaze darts to his left hand before I can stop it. No ring. He’s unmarried.

He looks down at me, expectantly. His eyes narrow ever so slightly, and I feel like I’m being dissected, measured up, and tucked away in some small corner of his brain. I imagine this is what a gemstone feels like under the magnifying class of the most critical appraiser.

Stonehart clears his throat. I come to with a start, realizing I haven’t said anything in ages. I open my mouth, but the capacity for speech seems like a foreign concept to my brain. “I—”

Somebody bumps into me from behind. I stagger forward. I’m not used to these shoes, so my heel steps the wrong way. My ankle twists under me, and I start to fall.

I don’t fall far. The hand still on my elbow tightens, and Stonehart pulls me into him.

I plaster myself onto the solid steel wall the man has for a body. I catch a scent of his cologne. It’s a deep, musky smell with a hint of charred spruce that is all male. It scrambles my thoughts even more.

“Sorry!” a rushed voice calls out. From the corner of my eye, I see the postman giving a hurried, apologetic wave.

Although the sequence lasts less than a second, it feels like an eternity. Pressed up against him like that, I don’t want to move. I know that I couldn’t have made a worse first impression.

Stonehart eases me off him with a firm yet gentle grip. Our eyes meet. I flush the most vibrant red. His fingers graze my forehead as he brushes a lock of hair out of my face.

Any tenderness I may have imagined vanishes when Stonehart takes out his cell. He long dials a key and growls an order. “Steven. See the delivery boy leaving right now? Have his building pass revoked.”

I gape. Stonehart keeps speaking. “Wait. I thought of one better. Bar his company from accessing the building.” There’s a pause. “For how long? Indefinitely. FedEx can talk to me when they have an improved employee selection program in place.”

The phone call gives me just enough time to compose myself. My heart’s still beating out of my chest. But nobody has to know that.

I speak without thinking. “You’re going to restrict the entire company from serving this building because of that?”

Stonehart humors me with an answer. “A company’s employees are its most important asset. Their behavior reflects the organization as a whole. If FedEx decided that clown is good enough for them, it tells me they’re sloppy. I do not do business with sloppy organizations.”

“What about the other tenants in the building?” I ask. “Won’t that piss them off?”

When I hear myself and realize how improper my question is, my cheeks flame red again.

Stonehart’s eyes darken, as if he cannot believe I asked that question. I open my mouth to apologize for my imprudence, hating the way my professional skills have evaporated into thin air. I’m cut off by a short, barked laugh.

“Miss Ryder.” He sounds amused. “I believe that is the most direct and honest question anybody has dared ask me in weeks.” He takes my elbow again and leads me to the elevators. I have to take two quick steps to match one of his long strides.

“Yes,” he continues. “They will be ‘pissed off.’ But the perk of owning a building—” he hits the elevator call button, “—is that you get to make executive decisions.” He gives me an unreadable glance as the doors open. “That is, at the risk of being questioned by inexperienced interns.”

If that isn’t a loaded remark, I don’t know what is. I flush scarlet red for the third time since I’ve met him. I’ve never had a man throw me so off balance.

The elevator is packed, for which I’m infinitely thankful. The trip up will give me some time to properlycompose myself.

Gratitude turns to panic when the crowd files out, meek as mice, when Stonehart steps in. None of the people waiting in the lobby follow us.

The doors close. I’m alone in here with him. My heart’s beating as fast as a hummingbird’s wings.

He catches me staring. “Impressed?” he asks.

“They know you,” I manage.

His dark eyes flash with amusement. “Astute.”

About the Author

I’m Scarlett Edwards. I wrote my first book as a college sophomore. After six months of edits, it made its debut as Yours to Savor.

That was at the start of 2013. I’ve written more books since then. You can find them all here.

It’s funny how quickly life changes. I used to think I’d need a degree to get a “Real Job.” Then I wrote a few books, they got somewhat popular, and now I’m living the life as a full-time romance author.

Thanks to all my readers for making my dreams come true!

Final day of the Eternal Justice Blog Tour! #giveaway

EternalJustice

Eternal Justice Cover-2
Title: Eternal Justice
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Synopsis

Ashley’s life has been devastated once before, and she has spent the last two years rebuilding her life with her sexy CIA husband and her son.

It has been over two years since retired DEA Agent Ashley Cameron-Langston tangled with the Dixie Mafia and the Colombian Drug Cartel.  Nightmares and vivid dreams have become less, until a special package arrives followed by information of a contract hit on her life.

CIA Agent, Anthony Langston will do anything to protect his beautiful, strong-willed wife and a precocious six year old son, he didn’t know he had until two years ago.

With time running out, there is only one thing to do:  the hunted become the hunters.

The team is learning a lesson in justice they never got in the police academies… how to become the equivalent of mercenaries and enforce Eternal Justice.  In an operation of this kind, death is imminent.

Chelly’s Thoughts

Eternal Justice opens with a dream replay of Operation Sundown, the takedown of the Martinelli Columbian Drug Cartel that went down in the first book of this series, Heart of Jaded Justice.  Anthony Langston had worked hard to be brought into the ring as an undercover agent, but he wasn’t trusted as much as he thought.  The dream keeps haunting Ashley over a year later, but in her dreams, Anthony wasn’t lucky enough to make it out alive.  Ashley just wants to feel safe with her family, but even though Martinelli was killed, the leader of the Dixie Mafia escaped alive and he will no doubt want revenge for the loss of his billions of dollars in drugs…

Now, Anthony and Ashley are married and living in Costa Rica, raising their son, A. J., together.  All of their friends and family have come to Costa Rica to celebrate Anthony’s birthday and everything is going great until Ashley opens an unmarked package – a handkerchief with a monogrammed “F” – Lewis Fox, the leader of the Dixie Mafia and Ashley’s worst fear…he’s found them, but how?

There is a price on Ashley’s head – an extremely high one – and Anthony wants nothing more than to keep her hidden away and safe, but Ashley’s a fighter and she’s not about to hide from anyone.  She refuses to spend her life constantly looking over her shoulder, this time she’s determined to take everyone down once and for all.  The problem is someone from the inside is feeding information to the bad guys, so who can actually be trusted?  Anthony and Ashley have agreed to retire from law enforcement once Operation Crossroads is over, if only they can make it out alive…

Eternal Justice is a very fast-paced, exciting read full of guns, explosions, kidnappings, dirty government workers, torture, and DNA popping up from dead guys, as well as love, family, great friends, and working through the ups and downs of marriage.  It is obvious that the author is extremely knowledgeable in law enforcement and detective work, and that is what made this story interesting for me.

Excerpt

Ashley examined her partner and best friend’s face, saw the worry flickering in his steel gray eyes. And her panic deepened.  “I am still in love with Tony and I never told him he has a son.  I have so many regrets.  But, all of that put aside; this operation just doesn’t feel right.”  Ashley’s features grew pained, as if the admission caused her physical torture.

Chase silenced Ashley with a sympathetic look.  “Stop.”  He ordered.  It is pointless flinging the past up at each other.  You and Anthony just need to clear the air.”  His voice suddenly sounded strained.  “Seriously, Ashley, what do you want?”
