We are in the middle of a storm, and I will offer you know...
We are in the middle of a storm, and I will offer you know illusions, it’s going to get worse before it gets better. The landscape of this place will look different when we emerge after the winds have stopped, we will be different. This will be scary and this will be long and this will be hard. But. There is always a but, shining like torchlight at the mouth of the darkness, there is beauty still, there is peace and tenderness and, maybe for the first time, stillness where once only frenzy and noise. We are a world on pause, a civilization put on hold, and from this a gift has emerged, a gift of something we had more of once but frittered it away: Time. We have time to look into the eyes of those we are with, to step back from the cycle of busyness and motion, to connect, even if with digital and artificial means, with those who time and our lack of it has pushed further away than they should be. We can re-embrace play, become silly again as laughter is medicine, too. We can be bored, and in such, our creativity can grow. We can live selflessly, and truly put others in front of ourselves in ways we forgot we excelled at. We can love, we can love fiercely and show it in a million ways. We can look into clear skies now that our pollution has been restrained, we can marvel at the way this planet heals as we heal, and reevaluate what it means to care for this earth, we can see, finally now the smog lifts, our role in its illness. We are in a storm, all of us for the first time in a century, the whole world quiet with held breath and hope, and we can see now what we should have always seen, we are all faces of the same soul, all veins from the same heart, united in our suffering, but forever connected in our strength, in our endurance, in our joy.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all of you. While the streets may be silent, the parades canceled, the pubs shuttered and empty, we can still celebrate. Celebrate and learn from a culture built on endurance, on survival. There were clean cuts,
some I hardly felt,
there were precision
surgical removals
of the threads
from another’s
heart.
There were hack jobs,
butcherings with dull edge
and battered blade,
tearing and tugging
and scars that don’t fade
with others,
pieces left like sponges,
like scalpels
from surgeons forgetful
and untrained.
Some stick, some fade,
some grow roots,
burrow down deep
and know only
holding on.
We are forged
by what we
lose.
